How to Grow Impatiens: Water Cuttings, Shade Pots and Flowers

If your veranda gets bright light but little direct sun, impatiens will fill it with colour when almost nothing else flowers there. The easy way to grow impatiens is not seed: buy a few nursery plants in autumn or spring, then root stem cuttings in a glass of water to multiply them for free. Keep the soil evenly moist, shelter them from afternoon sun and frost, and they flower for months.

In brief

  • Light: bright shade, or 2 to 3 hours of morning sun.
  • Plains planting: September to November and February to March.
  • Pot: 15 cm (6 inch), about 2 litres per plant; three in a 25 cm pot.
  • Water: keep evenly moist, never soggy; they wilt fast in hot dry air.
  • Best propagation: stem cuttings in water, roots in about one to two weeks.
  • Seed to flower: slow, often three months or more.

Where do impatiens grow well in Pakistan and North India?

  • Karachi: the easiest city for them. Humidity suits them; grow in shade most of the year.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: a cool season flower, best October to April. They struggle in May to June heat and rot in heavy monsoon rain.
  • Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: winter and early spring only, in deep shade.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar: spring and autumn, plus summer in shade; protect from frost.
  • Hills: a summer bedding plant, the classic window box filler.

Seed or nursery seedlings for beginners?

Nursery plants, without hesitation. Impatiens seed is tiny, costly and slow: it needs steady warmth to germinate, seedlings damp off easily, and plants take months to flower. Two or three healthy nursery plants plus water cuttings will give you a full display in weeks.

The glass of water method

Snip 8 to 10 cm tips just below a leaf joint, pull off the lower leaves and any flowers, and stand them in a glass of water on a bright, shaded windowsill. Change the water every two days. White roots usually appear in one to two weeks; pot them up when roots are 2 to 3 cm long. Pinch the tip of each new plant once it settles, and you get a bushy plant instead of a single stalk. Ten cuttings from one parent is easy.

How to grow impatiens from seed (if you want to)

  1. Timing: sow in August to September for winter flowers in the plains, or January to February indoors for spring.
  2. Mix: fine, sieved seed mix or cocopeat, damp before sowing.
  3. Sow shallow. Press the seed in and cover with only a light dusting of sieved mix.
  4. Cover the tray with clear plastic to hold humidity, in bright shade, at room warmth.
  5. Germination takes roughly two to three weeks. Remove the plastic once most seedlings are up.
  6. Water from below and prick out seedlings at two true leaves.

Impatiens care in pots

Mix

Moisture holding but airy: roughly equal parts garden soil, compost and cocopeat. Our potting mix ratio guide has variations.

Water by season

  • Winter: every 3 to 5 days.
  • Spring heat: daily, morning.
  • Summer: twice a day in hot dry wind; or move them indoors next to a bright window.
  • Monsoon: keep under a roof; constant rain rots stems.
  • Frost nights: bring pots inside; even a light frost kills them.

Feeding and pinching

Feed with a weak balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks once flowering. Impatiens drop spent flowers on their own, so deadheading is optional, but pinching tips every few weeks keeps them compact.

How long does impatiens take to flower, and why is mine not flowering?

Rooted cuttings usually flower within a month. Seedlings take three months or more. If a mature plant isn’t flowering, check these:

CauseSignFix
Too much shadeLong, thin stemsMove to bright shade with some morning sun
Too much sunScorched, curling leavesShade after 10 am
Heat stressBuds drop in May and JuneWater more, accept a pause
Too much nitrogenLush leaves, no budsSwitch to a balanced feed
Downy mildewYellow leaves, white fuzz underneath, leaves dropRemove plant; don’t replant impatiens there

Is impatiens annual or perennial?

Technically a tender perennial. In practice, in the plains, most plants last a season or two before heat, rain or frost gets them. Keep a few cuttings indoors to restart each autumn. New Guinea impatiens, with larger leaves, tolerate a bit more sun and resist downy mildew better.

How to save impatiens seeds

The seed pods are why impatiens are called touch me not: ripe pods burst at a touch and fling seeds. Slip a small paper bag over a fat, pale green pod and squeeze gently; the seeds pop into the bag. Dry them indoors for a week and store in an envelope. Hybrid plants won’t come true, so cuttings are better for keeping a favourite colour.

Take care if

Common impatiens is not listed among the dangerous garden plants, but young children shouldn’t eat any ornamental plant, and the seeds pop toward eyes when pods burst. Saucers of water under shade pots breed mosquitoes, including dengue mosquitoes, so empty them after watering. Use soap or neem sprays for aphids and spider mites; for any chemical, read the label, wear gloves and keep children away until it dries. Find more shade flowers in Phool aur Paudhe.

Impatiens growing questions

Can impatiens grow in full shade?

They grow in deep shade but flower sparsely. Bright shade, or a few hours of gentle morning sun, gives the most flowers.

How long do impatiens cuttings take to root in water?

Usually one to two weeks in warm weather. Pot them once roots are a few centimetres long.

When should I plant impatiens in Lahore?

September to November for winter colour, or February to March for spring. Summer planting rarely works in the plains.

Why are my impatiens wilting?

Usually dry soil and hot air. If the soil is wet and plants still wilt, the roots may be rotting from waterlogging.

Do impatiens need deadheading?

No, they drop old flowers on their own. Pinching back leggy stems is more useful.

Can impatiens grow indoors?

Yes, on a bright windowsill out of direct afternoon sun. Indoors is a good summer refuge in hot cities.

What is the difference between impatiens and balsam?

Both are Impatiens species. Garden balsam (gul mehndi) is an upright annual sown in the monsoon, while bedding impatiens are lower, spreading plants for shade.

Are impatiens safe for pets?

They aren’t listed among the seriously toxic plants, but chewing any ornamental can upset a pet’s stomach. Call a vet if a pet eats a lot and seems unwell.
