How to Grow Canna: Planting Depth, Pots, Dividing and Storing
How to grow canna in one line: plant a fat rhizome about 12 cm deep, eyes facing up, in rich soil and full sun between February and March, keep it wet in summer, and split the clump every second spring. Canna is one of the few flowers that laughs at a 45C Multan June and a flooded Lahore monsoon bed in the same year.
Canna at a glance
- Plant: rhizome (people call it a bulb), not seed, for a quick start
- When: February to March on the plains; March to April in the hills; Karachi can plant almost any month except the coldest weeks
- Depth: about 12 cm (5 inches) of soil over the rhizome
- Pot: at least 30 litres (14 inch) for one rhizome; dwarf types manage in 15 to 20 litres (12 inch)
- Sun: 6 hours or more; shade gives leaves without flowers
- First flowers: usually the same summer you plant
- Safe with pets? Extension lists class it as non-toxic to cats and dogs

When should you plant canna rhizomes in Pakistan and North India?
Plant when the soil has warmed and the frost risk has gone. That window is short in some cities and wide open in others.
| Zone | Plant | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal humid (Karachi, Mumbai side) | February to April, or after the monsoon | No frost; it barely rests |
| Hot dry (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur) | February to early March | Get roots in before May heat |
| Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi) | Late February to March | Frost nights in January can blacken leaves |
| Sub-humid (Islamabad, Peshawar) | March | Mulch the clump in winter |
| Hills (Murree, Shimla type) | April to May | Lift rhizomes before hard frost |
How deep and which way up?
A canna rhizome looks like a knobbly ginger root. Look for the pinkish or white pointed buds, called eyes. Those face up. The flat side with dry root scars faces down. If you truly cannot tell, lay it on its side; the shoot will find its way, only a week or so slower.
- Pick a firm rhizome with at least two or three eyes. Soft, wrinkled or mouldy pieces rot.
- Dig a hole roughly 15 cm deep, loosen the bottom, and add a handful of compost.
- Set the rhizome flat, eyes up, and cover with about 12 cm of soil. North Carolina’s extension guidance says at least 5 inches deep and 12 inches (30 cm) apart in the ground.
- Water once, deeply. Then wait. Watering a sleeping rhizome every day is the commonest way to rot it before it sprouts.
- Expect shoots in two to four weeks, faster in warm soil.
Can canna grow in pots?
Yes, and it does well, as long as the pot is big. A full sized canna wants a 30 litre pot at the least; one rhizome fills it in a season. Dwarf varieties (sold as dwarf or patio canna) are fine in a 12 inch pot. Use a mix of roughly 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost and 1 part cocopeat or sand, and see our potting mix ratios if your soil is heavy clay.
One quirk works in your favour: canna tolerates wet feet better than most flowers. It still needs a drainage hole, but a pot that stays damp in July will not kill it the way it kills a rose.
How much water and food does it need through the year?
Canna is thirsty and hungry while growing, and almost dormant in winter.
- Summer (May to June, 40 to 45C): pots daily, sometimes twice; ground beds every two or three days. Mulch heavily.
- Monsoon: water only when the top few cm dry. Clear drains so the bed does not sit flooded for days.
- Autumn: every few days as flowering winds down.
- Winter, frost nights: almost dry. Plains clumps go semi dormant; leaves may brown.
Feed with a handful of compost or well rotted manure each month in the growing season, or a balanced NPK fertiliser at label rate. Too much nitrogen gives giant leaves and few flowers, so once buds appear a bloom fertiliser with more phosphorus and potassium suits it. Our watering guide has the finger test that works for every pot.
The deadheading trick that doubles the show
Do not cut the whole stalk when the first flowers fade. Look just below the spent cluster: there is usually a second bud tucked in the leaf sheath. Snip only the dead head above it. Cut the stalk to the ground only when it has no buds left. New stalks then come up from the rhizome all summer.
Why is my canna not flowering?
Run through these in order; the first one is the answer most of the time.
- Too little sun. Under 5 or 6 hours you get lovely leaves and nothing else.
- Pot too small or clump overcrowded. After two years the rhizomes choke each other. Divide.
- Hungry plant. Pale leaves and short stalks mean feed it.
- Too much nitrogen. Dark, huge leaves and no buds: switch to compost and a bloom feed.
- Leaf rollers ate the bud. Unroll a tightly rolled leaf. A caterpillar inside often chews the flower spike before it emerges.
- Too young. A small single eye division may need a full season.
How do you divide and multiply canna?
Division is the reliable method. Seed works, but the coat is rock hard and seedlings vary in colour, so most gardeners skip it.
- In February or March, every second year, dig up the clump with a fork.
- Shake off soil and look for the natural joints between sections.
- Break or cut so each piece has at least two eyes and some root.
- Let cut faces dry in shade for a day so they callus.
- Replant at the same 12 cm depth. Success rate is high; nearly every healthy piece grows.
What do you do after flowering and how do you store canna bulbs?
On the plains and in Karachi there is usually no need to lift. After flowering ends in late autumn, cut faded stalks down, mulch the bed, and let it rest. In a frosty Islamabad or hill garden, or in a pot you need for something else, lift the rhizomes once the leaves blacken.
- Cut stems to about 10 cm and dig the clump.
- Dry in shade for a few days; do not wash.
- Pack in dry cocopeat, sawdust or newspaper in a carton.
- Keep somewhere cool and dry, roughly 7 to 10C is ideal per the NC State guidance, so a cool storeroom works. Not a fridge.
- Check monthly and throw out anything soft or mouldy.
Which pests and problems should you watch?
| Problem | Sign | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf roller caterpillars | Leaves stuck shut like tubes, holes in buds | Unroll and pick out by hand; neem spray on young leaves |
| Snails and slugs | Ragged holes after rain | Hand pick at night, clear debris |
| Aphids | Sticky clusters on buds | Jet of water, then soap spray |
| Canna mosaic virus | Pale yellow streaks, twisted leaves | No fix; remove and bin, never divide it |
| Rhizome rot | No sprout, mushy root | Better drainage, less winter water |
Canna itself is not on the usual toxic plant lists, but the sprays used on it can be. Start with hand picking and plain soap or neem. If you ever use a chemical insecticide, read the full label, wear gloves and a mask, spray in the evening when bees are gone, and keep children and pets off the bed until it dries. If a child swallows a garden chemical, call a doctor or poison centre immediately with the bottle in hand. Rhizomes sold in bulk sometimes carry the mosaic virus; buy from someone who will show you healthy growing plants.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it if you have a sunny bed or a large pot and want colour in the hottest months, especially in Multan, Lahore or Delhi, where many flowers give up. Skip it on a shaded balcony or a small window sill: it will only make leaves. Within the Phool aur Paudhe family it is one of the easiest flowers to keep for decades, because the rhizomes simply multiply.
Canna questions people ask
When is the best time to plant canna bulbs?
February to March on the Punjab and Sindh plains, once frost has passed. Karachi gardeners can plant through spring and again after the monsoon. In the hills wait for April or May.
How deep should canna rhizomes be planted?
About 12 cm, or 5 inches, of soil over the top, with the eyes pointing up. Shallower plants topple in wind; much deeper ones are slow to come up.
Can canna grow in a pot on a balcony?
Yes, if the balcony gets six or more hours of sun and the pot holds 30 litres or more. Dwarf varieties manage in a 12 inch pot. In shade it will grow leaves but rarely flower.
Why does my canna have leaves but no flowers?
Usually not enough sun, an overcrowded clump, or too much nitrogen fertiliser. Move it to full sun, divide it if it is older than two years, and switch to compost and a bloom feed.
Should I cut canna after flowering?
Snip the dead flower head first, because a second bud often hides below it. Cut the whole stalk to the ground only when it has finished. This keeps new stalks coming.
How do I store canna bulbs over winter?
Lift after the leaves blacken, dry in shade, and pack in dry cocopeat or sawdust in a cool storeroom. On the plains and the coast most gardeners just leave them in the ground with a mulch.
Is canna poisonous to dogs and cats?
Extension plant lists class garden canna as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Any pet can still get an upset stomach from chewing leaves, and sprays on the plant are the bigger risk.
How fast does canna multiply?
Quickly. One healthy rhizome often becomes a small clump in a single season.
