How to Grow Gulmohar Tree: Space, Roots, Seed and Storm Pruning
Before you learn how to grow gulmohar tree, measure your lawn. Gulmohar (flame tree, Delonix regia) grows a crown wider than it is tall, with big surface roots and brittle branches. On a large plot it is the most spectacular red tree of the summer. On a small one, it lifts your driveway and drops limbs on your car.
The short version
- Mature size: roughly 10 to 12 m tall, 12 to 18 m wide
- Distance: at least 6 m from the house, 3 m from paving, drains and boundary walls
- Planting months: March, or July to August
- Growth: fast in warmth and water
- Flowers: April to June, scarlet to orange
- Frost: young trees are tender; protect for 2 to 3 winters

Is gulmohar suitable for your city and plot?
Gulmohar comes from frost-free Madagascar and loves heat. Karachi and Hyderabad grow it best; it is a fixture on old Karachi streets. Lahore, Multan and Delhi grow it well too, but frost nights scorch young trees and can kill a sapling in its first winter. In Islamabad and Peshawar it survives in warm, sheltered spots only, and the hills are too cold.
| Situation | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kanal or larger lawn, plains | Plant | Room for the crown and roots |
| Karachi, coastal Sindh | Plant | No frost; but site away from direct salty sea wind |
| 10 marla lawn | Maybe | Only in a back corner, 6 m from the house |
| 5 marla or smaller | Skip | Roots lift paving; branches overhang the street |
| Islamabad, Peshawar, hills | Skip | Frost damage most winters |

Why do gulmohar roots damage houses and paving?
Gulmohar forms large surface roots that run out wide rather than deep. Extension guidance in Florida advises keeping it about 3 m from pavement. They do not usually crack a sound foundation directly, but they buckle tiles, kerbs and garden walls, block old clay drains, and make lawns lumpy. Six metres from the house is a sensible minimum; more if your home has shallow foundations or a leaky drainage line.
Plan the shade, not just the tree
Mark a circle 6 m in radius from where you want to plant. Anything inside it, a gate, a gas line, a septic tank, a neighbour’s wall, will one day sit under the crown or above the roots. If the circle catches anything precious, move the spot now.
How do you grow gulmohar from seed?
The long flat brown pods hang on the tree for months and hold hard, striped seeds.
- Collect dry pods in late winter or spring. Split them and take out the seeds.
- Nick each seed at the end away from the scar with nail clippers or rub on a rough stone.
- Soak in warm water overnight. Sow only the seeds that swell.
- Sow 2 cm deep in small bags of 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand.
- Keep warm and damp; most sprout within 1 to 2 weeks in March to July.
- Pot up into 10 to 15 litre containers and keep for a year before planting out.
Cuttings and air layering are possible but rarely worth the trouble. Seed is quick and reliable.
Best time to plant a gulmohar sapling
In Lahore and Delhi, March is ideal, giving the tree a full warm season before its first winter. July and August also work, with monsoon moisture. In Karachi, almost any month outside the hottest weeks of May and June is fine. Dig a 60 cm wide and deep pit, mix the topsoil with compost, plant at the same depth as in the bag, and water deeply. Stake against wind for the first year.
How fast does gulmohar grow, and how tall?
Fast. With water and heat, saplings put on well over a metre a year. Flowering on seedlings often begins at around five to eight years, sometimes later. The mature tree is usually 10 to 12 m tall with an umbrella crown of 12 to 18 m. That width is what catches people out.
Gulmohar care for the first two years
Watering
- 45°C summers: fill the basin twice a week in Multan and Lahore, every 4 to 5 days in Karachi.
- Monsoon: let rain do the work. Waterlogging encourages root fungus.
- Winter: every two weeks. On frost nights, wrap the stem with sacking and drape a sheet over a small sapling.
For pot stage watering, our guide to how often to water potted plants applies.
Pruning: the storm safety step
Gulmohar wood is weak and breaks in storms, especially where two branches meet at a narrow V. While the tree is young, keep one central trunk and remove branches that leave at a tight angle. Keep side branches smaller than half the trunk’s width. Do structural pruning in late winter, before new growth.
Feeding
Compost or old manure in March and after the monsoon. A light dose of mustard cake worked into the soil helps a slow sapling. Mature trees need no feed; extra nitrogen only makes leafy, weaker growth.
Common gulmohar problems
| Problem | Cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves eaten in summer | Caterpillars | Ignore on big trees; hand pick on saplings |
| Black, dead young shoots in January | Frost | Wait until March, then cut back to green wood |
| Wilting, sparse crown, soggy ground | Root fungus | Fix drainage; ask the provincial agriculture extension office if it spreads |
| Pods and leaves everywhere | Normal | Sweep; plant away from the car porch |
Brittle limbs fall in dust storms and monsoon squalls, so never site the tree over a children’s play area, a parked car spot or a roof water tank. Keep the crown clear of electric wires; pruning near power lines is a job for the electricity company, never for you. Some people react to tree pollen, so check the pollen calendar. If you use any chemical spray on a sapling, read the label, wear gloves and keep pets away until dry.
Grow it or skip it?
Plant it on a big lawn, a farmhouse or a wide road verge in Karachi or the Punjab and Sindh plains, and prune it early. Skip it on small plots, near drains and in frost-prone Islamabad. More choices for flowering trees and shrubs are in Phool aur Paudhe.
Gulmohar growing questions
How long does gulmohar take to flower?
Seedlings usually flower at around five to eight years, depending on warmth, sun and water. Shade delays it.
Can gulmohar grow in a pot?
Only for its first year or two. As a bonsai it can live in a shallow tray, but a normal pot cannot hold a tree this size.
How far should gulmohar be planted from a house?
At least 6 m from the house and 3 m from paving, drains and boundary walls, because its roots spread wide near the surface.
Why is my gulmohar not flowering?
Age is the usual reason, followed by shade and heavy feeding. A young tree in full sun with lean soil flowers sooner.
Is gulmohar a fast growing tree?
Yes, quite fast with heat and water. That speed is one reason its wood is brittle.
Does gulmohar survive winter in Lahore?
Mature trees do. Young trees often lose shoots to frost, so wrap and cover them on cold nights for the first two or three winters.
Is gulmohar the same as Amaltas?
No. Both are legume trees, but gulmohar has red to orange upright flowers and feathery leaves, while Amaltas has hanging yellow chains.
Can I grow gulmohar from a cutting?
It is possible but unreliable. Seed is far easier and sprouts within a couple of weeks once nicked and soaked.
