How to Grow Champa (Frangipani) from Cuttings Without Rot
Most champa cuttings die for one reason: they are planted fresh, and the cut end rots. To grow champa (frangipani, plumeria) well, take a cutting in March or April, let the cut end dry and seal for about a week in the shade, then plant it in gritty soil and barely water until leaves appear. After that, it needs sun, a dry winter, and patience.
Before you start
- Names: Champa, Gul e Chin, Frangipani, Plumeria.
- Best method: cuttings 30 to 45 cm long. Seed is slow and unpredictable.
- Pot: start in a 10 to 12 inch pot (8 to 12 litres); move up to 16 to 18 inches (25 to 35 litres) for a mature plant.
- Mix: equal parts garden soil, coarse sand and compost, plus a handful of brick chips.
- Sun: full sun, six hours or more.
- First flowers: often in the second or third summer from a cutting; a cutting taken from a flowering tip may bloom sooner.

Which climate suits champa?
Champa loves heat and hates cold, wet roots. University of Florida extension rates plumeria as frost-sensitive and says plants in colder places should live in containers that come indoors for winter.
| Zone | Verdict | Planting window |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | Plant, in ground or pot; may keep leaves all year | March to May |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Plant; loves summer, shelter from frost nights | March to April |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Plant, ideally in a pot or a south-facing wall bed | March to April |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Maybe: a pot moved under cover in winter | April |
| Hills | Skip outdoors; a sunroom pot only | May |
How to grow champa from cuttings
- In March or April, cut a firm, grey-skinned branch 30 to 45 cm long. Avoid green, soft tips.
- Wear gloves: the milky sap irritates skin and eyes.
- Strip off any leaves and flowers. Leave the cutting in a dry, shaded, airy spot for about a week until the cut end is dry and sealed.
- Fill a 10 inch pot with gritty mix that is barely damp.
- Push the cutting 8 to 10 cm deep and tie it to a stick so it cannot wobble.
- Do not water again until the soil is dry deep down. A cutting has no roots to drink with.
- Leaves in four to eight weeks usually mean roots. Only then water normally.
Success is good when the cut end is fully dried and the mix is gritty. A cutting that turns black and soft from the base has rotted: cut above the rot, dry again, and replant.
The rot-proof start
Plant the dried cutting in pure coarse sand or a sand and brick chip mix, then move it into potting mix once it has a few leaves. Sand cannot stay soggy, so the base cannot rot, and you can tug gently to check for roots.
Seed and layering
Seed from the bean-like pods germinates readily but takes years to flower, and the colour is a surprise. Air layering works on a thick branch in early summer, though cuttings are so easy that few people bother.
Champa care by season
Summer (April to September)
Water deeply when the top 5 cm is dry. In 45C heat, that can be every two to three days for a pot. During the monsoon, water less and make sure the pot drains freely.
Winter (December to February)
Leaf drop in the plains is normal. University of Florida notes plumerias go dormant in winter and the leafless green stems still photosynthesise. Water a bare plant only once every two to three weeks, lightly. On frost nights in Lahore, Delhi and Islamabad, move pots against a wall or under a roof, or cover them with a cloth. Our seasonal watering guide explains why winter overwatering is deadly.
Feeding for blooms
From March to September, give compost every two months and a balanced liquid feed monthly, switching to one higher in phosphorus and potash before flowering. Too much nitrogen gives big leaves and no flowers.
When should you prune champa?
Prune in late February to March, just before new growth. Each cut branches into two or three arms, and flowers form at those tips, so more tips means more flower heads. Prune late, in May or June, and you remove that summer’s flower buds, and the cut ends stay wet in the monsoon and can rot. Seal large cuts by keeping them dry and out of rain for a few days.
Why is my champa not flowering?
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Too young | Wait; branches usually flower once they have forked |
| Under six hours of sun | Move to the sunniest wall |
| Too much nitrogen | Use compost and a bloom feed instead |
| Pruned in summer | Prune only in late winter next time |
Champa leaves turning yellow: what does it mean?
In October and November it is the start of normal winter drop. In summer, yellow lower leaves with a soggy pot means overwatering. Orange powdery spots on the undersides are rust, which University of Florida describes on plumeria: pick up fallen leaves and bin them so the spores do not overwinter. Mealybugs and scale on stems can be wiped off with a cloth dipped in soapy water.
Champa sap is irritating. Florida extension notes it is a dogbane family plant, considered less poisonous than kaner (oleander), but still to be kept away from children and pets. Wear gloves when cutting and wash hands before touching your eyes. See our guide to poisonous plants for kids and pets. If sap gets in an eye, rinse with running water for several minutes and seek medical help if pain persists.

Champa questions people ask
How do I grow champa from a cutting?
Dry a 30 to 45 cm cutting in shade for about a week, plant it 8 to 10 cm deep in gritty, barely damp mix, stake it, and hold off watering until leaves appear.
Why did my champa cutting rot?
Usually it was planted fresh or watered too much. A cutting cannot use water until it has roots, so wet soil just rots the base.
When is the best time to plant champa?
March to April in the plains, when nights are warm. Karachi has a wider window, roughly March to May.
How long does a champa cutting take to flower?
Often one to three years. Cuttings from a branch that was already flowering can bloom in the first summer.
Why is my champa dropping leaves in winter?
That is normal dormancy in the plains. Keep it dry and frost-free, and leaves return in spring.
What is the best fertiliser for champa?
Compost, plus a balanced feed in spring and a phosphorus and potash rich bloom feed from early summer. Avoid heavy urea.
Can champa grow in a pot?
Yes, and in Punjab a pot is safer because you can move it from frost. Use a heavy pot so the plant does not topple in wind.
Is champa poisonous to dogs and cats?
The sap is irritating and the plant should not be chewed. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew plants, and call a vet if one does.
How do I make my champa branch out?
Cut the tips in late winter. Each cut usually sends out two or three new branches, and each can carry flowers.
