Plants That Attract Butterflies and Bees in a Desi Garden
The plants that attract butterflies and bees in a Pakistani or North Indian garden are mostly the cheap, cheerful ones: zinnia, marigold, pentas, sunflower, tulsi, curry leaf and citrus. Grow a few nectar flowers in a sunny clump, leave the caterpillars on their host plants, and stop routine spraying, and the pollinators turn up within a season.
In brief
- Nectar: zinnia, marigold, pentas, cosmos, sunflower, tulsi, ixora
- Host plants: curry leaf and citrus for lime butterfly; aak for plain tiger
- Bees love: sarson, dhania and saunf left to flower, sunflower, drumstick
- Sun: five to six hours on the flower bed
- Skip: lantana, double flowers and routine insecticide spraying

What is the difference between nectar plants and host plants?
Butterflies need two kinds of plant. Adults sip nectar from open, flat or tubular flowers. Caterpillars eat the leaves of specific host plants, and many species will lay eggs on only a few. A garden full of flowers but no host plants gets visiting butterflies; a garden with host plants raises its own.
That is why a lemon tree with a few nibbled leaves is a better butterfly plant than a perfect bed of petunias. The nibbling is the point: those caterpillars become next month’s swallowtails.
Bees are simpler: they want pollen and nectar, ideally from many flowers of one kind grouped together, and they want not to be poisoned.
Which plants attract butterflies?
| Plant | Role | When it flowers (plains) |
|---|---|---|
| Zinnia | Nectar, a butterfly favourite | Mar to Oct |
| Pentas | Nectar, star clusters | Most of the year in mild areas |
| Marigold (single types) | Nectar | Winter and spring |
| Ixora | Nectar for swallowtails | Summer, monsoon |
| Curry leaf, lemon, kinnow | Host: lime butterfly | Leaves year round |
| Aak (Calotropis) | Host: plain tiger | Wasteland plant, year round |
Let the lime butterfly have the curry leaf
The lime butterfly, the big black and yellow swallowtail, lays eggs on citrus and curry leaf. University of Florida’s pest profile lists the curry leaf tree among its hosts. Young caterpillars look like bird droppings; older ones are fat and green. On a mature curry leaf plant, leave a few and pick off the rest by hand. You lose some leaves for tadka and gain butterflies. See our curry leaf growing guide for keeping the plant bushy.
Which plants attract bees?
Bees choose flowers with lots of pollen and easy access. Let a few herbs bolt: dhania, saunf and sarson flower generously and fill with small bees and hoverflies in February and March. Sunflowers, drumstick (moringa) and karela or lauki flowers feed bees in summer. Tulsi flowers almost non stop. Citrus blossom in spring is heavily visited.
Why are there no bees in my garden?
- Spraying: the biggest cause. Many common insecticides kill bees on contact or through treated flowers.
- Double flowers: showy double marigolds, roses and petunias have petals where the pollen should be. Choose single flowered types.
- Too few of one kind: a single pot of each flower is hard to find. Plant in clumps of five or more.
- Heat gaps: in May and June little flowers. Keep zinnia, sunflower and pentas going with morning watering.
- No water: a shallow dish with pebbles gives bees a safe place to drink.
How do you plan a small pollinator garden?
- Pick the sunniest bed or a row of pots that gets five to six hours of sun.
- Sow zinnia and cosmos in March to April (Karachi from February), and marigold in September to October for winter colour. Our zinnia and cosmos guide covers sowing.
- Add one or two perennials that bloom for months: pentas or ixora in 12 to 15 litre pots.
- Keep one host plant: a curry leaf or lemon in a 20 litre pot or in the ground.
- Let a corner of herbs flower instead of pulling them.
- Set a pebble water dish and refill it every morning in summer.
- Stop routine spraying.
What about lantana?
Lantana is a butterfly magnet, which is why people plant it, but it is one of the region’s worst invasive shrubs and its leaves and green berries are poisonous to children and livestock. Read why lantana and paper mulberry need removing. Pentas, ixora and zinnia give butterflies the same feast without the problems.
What are the no spray rules?
- Accept some chewed leaves. A garden with insects is a garden that feeds birds and butterflies.
- Hand pick big pests and hose off aphids with a strong jet.
- Use neem oil or soap spray only on the affected plant, never on open flowers.
- If you must spray, do it at dusk, when bees have gone home and the spray can dry overnight.
- For any chemical, read the label for bee warnings, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until it dries.
A butterfly garden is mostly what you stop doing: stop spraying, stop pulling flowering herbs, stop picking every caterpillar.

Bees sting when trapped or stepped on, so keep flowering beds away from doorways and children’s play spots, and anyone with a known sting allergy should keep their emergency plan and medicine handy. Swelling of the face or throat, or breathing trouble after a sting, is an emergency: get urgent help. Aak (Calotropis) sap is toxic and burns the eyes; grow it only away from children and wash hands after touching. Lantana berries are poisonous to children and pets.
Butterfly and bee garden questions
What plants attract butterflies in Pakistan?
Zinnia, pentas, marigold, ixora and cosmos for nectar, plus curry leaf or citrus as host plants for the lime butterfly.
What plants attract bees to a garden?
Single flowered sunflowers, tulsi, flowering dhania, saunf and sarson, citrus blossom, drumstick and gourd flowers.
Why are there no bees in my garden?
Usually spraying, double flowered plants, too few flowers of one kind or a summer gap with nothing in bloom.
What is a butterfly host plant?
A plant whose leaves caterpillars eat. Each butterfly lays eggs on specific hosts, like citrus and curry leaf for the lime butterfly.
Should I kill caterpillars on my lemon plant?
On a big plant, leave a few to become lime butterflies and hand pick the rest. Small saplings need more protection.
Can I make a pollinator garden on a balcony?
Yes. Pots of zinnia, pentas, tulsi and a small lemon in good sun will bring butterflies and bees even on upper floors.
Is neem oil safe for bees?
It is gentler than many insecticides, but it can still harm insects it hits directly. Spray at dusk and never on open flowers.
Does lantana attract butterflies?
Yes, strongly, but it is invasive and toxic. Pentas and ixora are safer substitutes.
