How to Grow Amaltas Tree (Golden Shower): Seed, Roots, Care

Most people who ask how to grow amaltas tree have bought a pod full of seeds, sown them, and waited a whole season for nothing. The fix is small: nick the seed coat or soak the seed in hot water first, and the same seeds come up in one to two weeks. After that, Amaltas (Golden Shower, Cassia fistula) is one of the easiest flowering trees for a house lawn in the plains.

Quick facts

  • Mature size: about 9 to 12 m tall and about as wide in good ground
  • Best planting months: February to March, or July to August with the monsoon
  • Distance from house walls: 4 to 5 m as a practical rule; 3 m from boundary walls and pipes
  • Sun: full sun, 6 hours plus
  • Flowers: hanging yellow chains, mostly May and June in Lahore and Delhi
  • First flowers: often 4 to 6 years from seed, sooner from a big sapling

Is Amaltas right for your plot and city?

Amaltas loves heat and dry air, which is why it shines in Multan, Bahawalpur and Lahore when everything else wilts. It handles clay, sandy and alkaline soil and moderate drought. Its weak spot is hard frost: young trees get their tips burnt in cold Punjab and Islamabad winters, then recover once it warms up.

How do you grow Amaltas from seed?

Each long black pod holds dozens of flat seeds packed in sticky dark pulp. The seed coat is so hard that untreated seed can lie in damp soil for months.

  1. Break a dry pod and pick out the seeds. Wash off the pulp and wear gloves if your skin is sensitive.
  2. Choose one treatment. Either rub one edge of each seed on a rough stone until a pale spot shows, or pour water just off the boil over the seeds, let it cool, and soak 12 to 24 hours.
  3. Sow seeds that have swollen to about twice their size; resoak the rest.
  4. Use small bags or 2 litre pots of 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand. Sow 1 to 2 cm deep.
  5. Keep damp and warm. Most seeds sprout in 7 to 15 days in March to August temperatures.
  6. Grow on in a 10 to 15 litre pot for a year, then plant out.

Grafting and air layering are rarely done for Amaltas because seed is so easy. A seedling takes longer to flower, which is the honest cost.

The ten minute nursery trick

Sow four or five treated seeds in separate bags rather than ten in one pot. Amaltas grows a long taproot early and hates having it torn when you separate crowded seedlings.

Sapling or seed: which is better?

If you want flowers soon, buy a sapling 1.5 to 2 m tall in a bag, with a straight single stem. Check that the root ball is firm and no thick roots circle the bag. If you are patient or planting many trees, seed is nearly free and the trees adapt well to your soil from day one.

How do you plant an Amaltas sapling?

  1. Dig a pit about 60 cm wide and 60 cm deep. Keep the topsoil separate.
  2. Mix the topsoil with a basket of well-rotted compost or old gobar. Fresh dung burns roots.
  3. Set the sapling at the same depth it sat in the bag, never deeper.
  4. Backfill, firm with your hands, and make a ring basin about 1 m across.
  5. Water slowly until the basin holds water, and tie the stem loosely to a stake.

How fast does Amaltas grow, and how tall does it get?

In warm places with water, it is classed as fast growing. In our plains, many gardeners find the first two years slow while roots establish, then height comes quickly. A mature tree usually sits around 9 to 12 m, with a crown just as wide. Prune the young tree to one leading trunk; trees left with two equal stems split more easily in storms.

Do Amaltas roots damage houses?

Amaltas roots are not counted among the aggressive ones, and the tree is often planted along roads. That said, any tree near a leaking drain will send roots towards the water. Give it 4 to 5 m from your house walls and 3 m from boundary walls, septic tanks and water lines. The bigger nuisance is litter: long pods, dropped leaves and spent flowers on the car porch.

Amaltas tree care for the first two years

Watering

  • Summer (45°C): deep water twice a week in Multan and Lahore, filling the basin each time.
  • Monsoon: skip unless dry for a week.
  • Winter: every 10 to 14 days. Wrap the stem and cover the top with a sheet on frost nights for the first two winters.

Feeding

Spread compost or old manure in the basin in February and again after the monsoon. A little mustard cake mixed into the soil is fine; see our guide to mustard cake, wood ash and cow dung for safe amounts. Mature trees need nothing.

Pests

Caterpillars sometimes strip leaves in summer. A healthy tree regrows them; hand pick on saplings. Powdery mildew and leaf spot appear in humid spells; improve air flow and do not wet the leaves late in the day.

Take care if

The seeds are poisonous, and the pod pulp has a strong laxative action. Keep fallen pods off lawns where toddlers play, and teach children not to eat them. Dogs that chew pods may get an upset stomach. If a child eats seeds or pulp and has vomiting, diarrhoea or seems drowsy, see a doctor the same day. People with tree pollen allergy should check the Pakistan pollen calendar before planting near bedrooms.

The pulp’s traditional use as a laxative, and its limits, are covered in Amaltas benefits and khiyar shambar limits; we don’t repeat that here.

Grow it or skip it?

Plant it if you have a lawn of 10 marla or more, or a road verge, in the hot plains. Few trees give such a spectacle for so little water. Skip it for a tiny front yard or a pot; a tree this size does not belong in a container. Browse more trees and flowers in Phool aur Paudhe.

Growing Amaltas: your questions

How long does an Amaltas tree take to flower?

Often four to six years from seed. A large nursery sapling can flower in two or three years once it settles.

When is the best time to plant Amaltas?

February to March before the heat, or July to August when the monsoon keeps the soil moist. Avoid planting in May and June.

Why are my Amaltas seeds not germinating?

Almost always the hard seed coat. Nick each seed or soak in hot water overnight and sow only the swollen ones.

Can I grow Amaltas in a pot?

Only as a young plant for a year or two. It becomes a large tree and should go into the ground.

Is Amaltas the same as golden shower tree?

Yes. Amaltas, golden shower and Indian laburnum all name Cassia fistula, the tree with long hanging yellow flower chains.

Why is my Amaltas not flowering?

Usually youth, shade or too much water and fertiliser. A young tree in full sun and lean soil flowers more readily than a pampered one.

Does Amaltas lose its leaves?

It often drops many leaves in late winter and spring, sometimes almost bare just before flowering. That is normal.

Can Amaltas survive frost?

Light frost burns young shoots but mature trees recover. Protect saplings for the first two winters in Lahore, Islamabad and Delhi.
