How to Grow Sukh Chain Tree (Pongamia): A Native Shade Pick
Want to know how to grow sukh chain tree? It may be the easiest shade tree in Pakistan: push a fresh seed into moist soil in July, keep it watered through its first summer, and you have a dense evergreen canopy within a few years. Sukh Chain (Pongamia, karanj) takes 45°C heat, salty water and poor soil. The one thing to plan for is its seeds, which are poisonous.
In brief
- Type: native, mostly evergreen legume tree; glossy leaves, pale lilac flower sprays in spring
- Size in gardens: a medium tree with a broad dome; very old trees in the wild can reach about 25 m
- Distance: 5 m from the house, 3 m from walls, drains and water tanks
- Planting: seed in July and August; saplings February to March or monsoon
- Climate range: from slightly below 0°C to about 50°C
- Fruiting: pods often begin at 4 to 7 years

Why plant Sukh Chain instead of conocarpus?
Conocarpus spread through Karachi and Lahore because it grows fast and stays green. It is not native, offers little to local birds and insects, and in Karachi it has been widely blamed for spring pollen allergy. Sukh Chain grows nearly as quickly, gives deeper shade, flowers for bees, fixes some of its own nitrogen as a legume, and belongs to our region. Several city tree drives have swapped to native species for these reasons. If allergies run in your family, read the Pakistan pollen calendar before you choose any tree.
Is Sukh Chain suitable for my city?
| Where | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, Hyderabad | Plant | Handles salty air and brackish water better than most |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Plant | Drought and heat tolerant once rooted |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Plant | Light frost marks young leaves; mature trees shrug it off |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Maybe | Grows, but hard frost sets saplings back |
| Hills | Skip | Too cold |
| Under 5 marla, next to the house | Skip | The canopy spreads wide and roots sucker |
How do you grow Sukh Chain from seed?
Unlike Amaltas or gulmohar, Pongamia seed needs no nicking. It does need to be fresh; old dried seed often fails.
- In spring and early summer, pick up plump fallen pods with no holes. One flat brown seed sits inside each.
- Crack the pod and take the seed out. Wash your hands afterwards.
- Soak overnight in plain water.
- Sow one seed per bag, 2 to 3 cm deep, in 2 parts soil to 1 part compost, or directly where the tree will stand.
- Sow in June to August so the monsoon carries the seedling. Most sprout within 2 to 3 weeks.
- Keep the bag sapling for about a year, then plant out.
Sow it where it will live
Pongamia makes a deep taproot fast. Two or three seeds sown straight into the final spot in July, with the weakest pulled later, often overtake a nursery sapling planted the same year, because the root is never cramped or cut.
Other ways to propagate
Root suckers are common around older trees. Dig one with a ball of soil and its own roots in February or July, cut it free cleanly, and plant it like a sapling. Cuttings and air layering are used by some nurseries but succeed less often than seed in home hands.
How fast does Sukh Chain grow, and how tall?
Fast for a native tree: with summer watering, a sapling can make roughly a metre or more a year once established. In city gardens it usually stays a compact to medium tree with a round crown, often wider than you expect. Shape it in the first three years: one main trunk, lowest branches lifted to about 2 m so you can walk underneath.
Do Sukh Chain roots damage houses?
Its roots spread widely, which is why foresters use it to hold eroding banks and dunes, and older trees send up suckers. Planted 5 m or more from the house and 3 m from boundary walls, drains, underground tanks and water lines, it is a good neighbour. Closer than that, the roots seek any leaking joint and suckers come up through paving.
Sukh Chain care for the first two years
- Summer: deep water twice a week in Multan, Sukkur and Lahore; every 4 to 5 days in Karachi.
- Monsoon: usually nothing extra.
- Winter: every two weeks; wrap the stem of a first year sapling on frost nights in Punjab.
- Feeding: compost in spring is enough. Mustard cake and cow dung are fine in small amounts for a slow starter.
- Mulch: a layer of dry leaves in the basin keeps roots cool in May and June.

Pests and problems
Leaf miners and caterpillars sometimes mark the new leaves in spring; a healthy tree outgrows them. Yellowing in waterlogged clay usually means poor drainage, not hunger. Sooty black film on leaves follows sap-sucking insects; hose it off.
Every part of the seed, and the oil pressed from it, is poisonous. The seeds look a little like beans or almonds, which can tempt children. Plant away from play areas, or rake up fallen pods weekly in spring, and teach children not to eat them. Keep goats, dogs and chickens off piles of seed. If a child eats one, or has vomiting or stomach pain after playing under the tree, see a doctor promptly and take a seed with you. Karanj oil is used on skin in tradition; it is never for swallowing.
Grow it or skip it?
Plant it. For a 10 marla or larger home, a school, a mosque courtyard or a roadside in the plains, few trees give as much shade for as little care. Skip it only on tiny plots or where small children play daily and you cannot keep pods cleared. For more native trees and flowering plants, see Phool aur Paudhe.
Sukh Chain tree: common questions
How fast does Sukh Chain grow?
Quite fast with water: often around a metre a year once roots settle. Growth slows without summer watering in dry cities.
When is the best time to plant Sukh Chain?
Sow seed or plant saplings in July and August with the monsoon. February to March also works for saplings if you can water through summer.
Is Sukh Chain evergreen?
Mostly. It drops many leaves briefly in late winter or spring and replaces them almost at once with fresh, bright green growth.
Are Sukh Chain seeds poisonous?
Yes. The seeds and their oil are toxic if eaten. Clear fallen pods where children and animals play.
Is Sukh Chain good for a small house?
Only if you can plant it 5 m from the house. On 5 marla plots, choose a smaller tree or a large shrub instead.
Can Sukh Chain grow in Karachi with salty water?
Yes, it tolerates salt and brackish water better than most shade trees, which is why it suits coastal Sindh.
Does Sukh Chain need fertiliser?
Hardly any. Compost once a year helps a young tree; established trees feed themselves as legumes do.
What is Sukh Chain called in English?
Pongamia or Indian beech. Botanists now name it Millettia pinnata; older books say Pongamia pinnata.
