Fragrant Plants for Home: Motia, Raat ki Rani and When They Smell
The best fragrant plants for home in Pakistan and North India are motia, raat ki rani, chandni, kamini, harsingar and rajnigandha (tuberose), and the trick is matching their scent hour to when you actually sit outside. Raat ki rani is the strongest of them, so strong that it can give some people headaches, so it belongs at the far end of the garden, never by a bedroom window.
Quick facts
- Strongest at night: raat ki rani, rajnigandha, harsingar
- Evening into night: motia, chameli, kamini
- Gentle, all day: chandni, which has only a light scent
- Balcony friendly: motia, chandni, rajnigandha in pots
- Keep away from beds: raat ki rani, for headaches and sensitive noses

Why do so many fragrant flowers bloom at night?
Most of the strongest scents here are white or cream and open after sunset. They are built for moths, which find flowers by smell in the dark. That is a gift in a hot climate: you sit outside after the heat breaks, exactly when they perform. A daytime garden in May relies more on colour than scent.
Jasmine vs raat ki rani: which is better?
For most homes, jasmine (motia) wins. Its scent is rich but you can sit beside it. Raat ki rani fills a whole lane, which is lovely from the gate and overpowering from a charpai next to it. Raat ki rani also grows into a large, untidy shrub, while motia stays manageable in a 12 to 15 litre pot.
Place scent by the wind, not the view
Note where the evening breeze comes from on your roof or lawn. Plant strong scents a few metres upwind of where you sit, so the smell drifts to you lightly. Plant gentle ones like motia right beside the chairs. A raat ki rani placed downwind of your seating barely reaches you; placed upwind beside the chairs, it can be too much.
Can raat ki rani cause headaches?
Yes, for some people. The strong night scent of Cestrum nocturnum is reported to cause headaches, sneezing, nose and throat irritation, nausea and breathing difficulty in sensitive people, particularly those with asthma. Australian government weed guidance also describes all parts of the plant as poisonous if eaten, with the berries the most concerning. Keep it out of bedrooms and away from windows that stay open at night.
Does raat ki rani attract snakes?
This is a myth. Snakes don’t seek out flowers or scent. A dense, untrimmed shrub near a wall gives cover, and if the garden has rats or frogs, snakes may follow the food. The fix is the same for any thick shrub: trim the base so you can see under it, clear rubble and keep the area free of rodents. Our guide on snakes and lizards at home covers what actually keeps them away.
Which fragrant flowers suit a balcony?
- Motia: 12 to 15 litre pot, five to six hours sun, blooms through summer.
- Rajnigandha: plant bulbs in February to March, three to a 10 litre pot.
- Chandni: tolerates part shade, flowers lightly most of the year.
- Kamini: works in a 20 litre pot if pruned, and smells strongly after watering.
Avoid raat ki rani on small balconies: there is no distance to soften it.
How do you get more scent from the same plants?
- Give full sun. Jasmines in shade grow leaves, not flowers.
- Water in the evening on hot days. A watered, cooled plant releases scent better that night.
- Feed with compost in spring and a phosphorus and potassium rich feed as buds form; too much nitrogen makes leaves instead of flowers.
- Pick motia buds in the afternoon for a bowl indoors; they open and scent the room by night.
- Prune jasmine after the main flush, since it flowers on new growth.
What about allergies and children?
Strong scent itself can bother people with asthma or migraines, whatever the plant. Raat ki rani berries are poisonous. Kaner (oleander), which some people plant for its flowers, is highly toxic in every part; see our list of plants dangerous to kids and pets. More flowering plants are in Phool aur Paudhe.
Keep raat ki rani away from bedrooms, and away from anyone with asthma, migraines or a sensitive nose. Its berries are poisonous to children and pets; remove them or plant it where small hands cannot reach. If a child swallows berries or leaves of any garden plant, call a poison centre or go to hospital, taking a piece of the plant with you. Wheeze, chest tightness or breathlessness near strong flowers needs a doctor, especially in a known asthmatic.
Fragrant plants: your questions
What are the best fragrant plants for home?
Motia, kamini, rajnigandha, harsingar and chandni suit most homes. Raat ki rani is the strongest but needs a distant spot.
Which flowers bloom at night and smell good?
Raat ki rani, rajnigandha, harsingar, motia and kamini all release their strongest scent after dark.
Does raat ki rani attract snakes?
No. Snakes are drawn by cover and prey, not scent. Keep the shrub’s base trimmed and the area free of rats.
Is raat ki rani harmful indoors?
Its strong scent can cause headaches and breathing irritation in some people, and its berries are poisonous, so keep it outdoors and away from bedrooms.
Which fragrant flowers grow on a balcony?
Motia, rajnigandha, chandni and a pruned kamini do well in pots with five to six hours of sun.
Jasmine or raat ki rani: which is better?
Jasmine for close seating and balconies; raat ki rani only for large gardens where it can stand far from people.
Why is my jasmine not smelling?
Usually too little sun or too much nitrogen. Move it to full sun and feed for flowers, not leaves.
What is the best smelling flower in Pakistan?
Motia is the most loved for its sweet scent and its use in garlands. Raat ki rani is the most powerful.
