How to Grow Gazania From Seed: Sowing Months, Pots and Flowers
Gazania is the daisy for the balcony that defeats everything else: full sun, hot wind, sandy soil, even salty sea air in Karachi. Sow it from seed in September to October (or February in the hills), give it six or more hours of direct sun and water only when the pot dries, and it flowers from late winter well into spring. For a beginner, a tray of nursery seedlings is the faster, surer start.
At a glance
- Sowing in the plains: September to November; plant seedlings out October to December.
- Sowing in the hills: February to April, after frost.
- Sun: 6 hours or more; flowers stay shut in shade and on cloudy days.
- Pot: 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inch), 2 to 4 litres per plant; a 60 cm trough fits four.
- Seed to flower: roughly ten to fourteen weeks.
- Annual or perennial: a short lived perennial, usually grown as a seasonal flower.

When should you sow gazania seeds in Pakistan?
Gazania is a winter and spring flower in the plains. It germinates in mild warmth, grows through the cool months and blooms when the sun returns strongly.
| Zone | Sow | Flowers |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal | September to December | December to April; some all year in shade free spots |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | October to November | January to April; stops in May heat |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | September to October | February to May |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | October, or February indoors | March to June |
| Hills | March to April | Summer |
Gazania copes with light frost on established plants, but hard frost nights in Islamabad can blacken the leaves. Pull pots under a roof edge on those nights.
Seed or nursery seedlings: which is better for beginners?
Honest answer: seedlings. Gazania seed is fluffy, often expensive per packet, and germinates unevenly if the mix gets too wet. A tray of nursery plugs in November gives flowers weeks sooner. Grow from seed if you want many plants, a particular colour mix, or simply enjoy the process.
How to grow gazania from seed
- Mix: half seed compost or fine cocopeat, half sand. Fill a tray and water it the day before so it is damp, not wet.
- Sow: press seeds lightly onto the surface, about 2 cm apart, and cover with a thin layer of mix, just enough to hide them; darkness helps germination.
- Cover: a sheet of newspaper or cardboard over the tray, in a warm, shaded corner.
- Check daily. Seedlings appear in about one to two weeks. Remove the cover the day you see them and move to bright light.
- Water from below by standing the tray in a dish for ten minutes; overhead watering knocks seedlings over and invites damping off.
- Transplant at three or four true leaves into individual pots.
The tray basics are covered fully in our seed starting guide.
Gazania care in pots
Soil
Gazania wants drainage above all. Use roughly 2 parts garden soil, 1 part coarse sand and 1 part compost; skip heavy clay and rich manure. Our potting mix ratios page explains why.
Water
- Winter: every 5 to 7 days in pots, when the top 3 cm is dry.
- Spring heat (35C plus): every 2 to 3 days.
- 45C weeks: morning watering daily for pots on a roof; a little afternoon shade helps them survive into June.
- Monsoon: it hates wet feet; move pots out of the rain.
Feeding
Light. Compost at planting, then a weak, balanced or higher potash liquid feed once every three to four weeks once buds appear. Too much nitrogen gives a mound of leaves and few flowers.
Why gazania belongs on a Karachi balcony
Gazania comes from coastal South Africa, and its leaves are tough and silver backed, so the salty, sandy wind that browns petunias barely bothers it. Put it on the most exposed, sunniest rail, where nothing else lasts, and use a plastic or glazed pot rather than terracotta, which dries too fast in that wind. Deadhead every couple of days with your fingers: snap the old flower stalk right down at the leaves, not just the head.
How long does gazania take to flower?
From seed, about ten to fourteen weeks in mild weather. Nursery seedlings already in bud flower within days. Each bloom opens in the morning sun and closes at night and on cloudy days; that is normal, not a sign of trouble.
Why is my gazania not flowering?
- Not enough sun: less than six hours means closed or no flowers.
- Too much water or rich soil: leafy growth, root rot.
- Summer heat: plants often pause flowering in the worst heat and restart when it cools.
- Not deadheaded: plants set seed and slow down.
- Old plants: after a year or two, flowering fades; replace from cuttings or seed.
Is gazania annual or perennial?
Botanically a perennial in warm climates, which is why Karachi plants can live for a couple of years. In the plains most people treat it as a seasonal winter and spring flower, because summer heat and monsoon rain wear plants down. Keep a pot or two going in light shade through summer if you want to try.
How to save gazania seeds and take cuttings
- Leave a few faded flowers on the plant. The head closes and swells.
- When it turns dry and opens into a fluffy puff, pick it on a dry afternoon.
- Pull out the seeds (each with its fluff), dry for a week indoors and store in a paper envelope in a cool cupboard.
- Hybrid colours won’t come true from seed; expect a mix.
To keep an exact colour, take 8 to 10 cm side shoot cuttings in October or February, remove the lower leaves, and root them in damp sand in bright shade. They usually root in three to four weeks.
Gazania isn’t grown to be eaten, and no ornamental should be: keep small children and pets from chewing leaves and flowers, and call a doctor or vet if they eat a lot and seem unwell. On roofs, check the parapet and floor can take the weight of wet pots. Spray soapy water or neem first for aphids; for any chemical, read the label, wear gloves and keep children and pets off the roof until it dries. Empty saucers after rain to stop mosquitoes breeding. Gazania growing questions
Can gazania grow in full sun in Pakistan?
Yes, it needs full sun to flower well. In 45C summer weeks, a little afternoon shade helps plants survive into June.
How do I grow gazania from seed at home?
Sow seeds on a sandy seed mix in September or October, cover lightly, keep them warm and just damp, and move seedlings into sun once they appear in about one to two weeks.
Why do gazania flowers close?
They close at night and in cloudy weather. It is a natural response to light, so a shaded pot shows mostly closed flowers.
How often should I water gazania in pots?
Water when the top few centimetres of mix are dry, roughly weekly in winter and every two or three days in spring heat. Never leave pots standing in water.
Does gazania come back every year?
In frost free places like Karachi it can, for a couple of seasons. In most plains cities plants tire in summer and are replaced each autumn.
Can gazania be grown from cuttings?
Yes. Side shoots root in damp sand in a few weeks in mild months, and cuttings keep the exact flower colour.
Is gazania good for hanging baskets?
It works in a sunny basket, but baskets dry fast. Use a deep one and expect to water daily in hot spells.
What pests attack gazania?
Aphids and mealybugs are the main ones, plus rot from overwatering. A soap spray handles the insects; drier soil handles the rot.
