How to Grow Duranta Hedge: Spacing, Cuttings and Trimming

Golden duranta is the low, lime-yellow hedge lining half the boundary walls in Lahore, Karachi and Delhi, and it earns that place by being easy. To grow a duranta hedge, plant rooted cuttings about 30 to 45 cm apart in a sunny strip, water well for the first summer, and trim lightly every few weeks in the growing season. Know one thing first: its berries and leaves are poisonous.

Before you plant

  • Names: Duranta, Golden Duranta, Golden Dewdrop, Duranta erecta.
  • Method: cuttings, easily rooted in spring or the monsoon.
  • Hedge spacing: 30 to 45 cm apart in a single row for a low hedge; a staggered double row for a thick one.
  • Sun: full sun for the brightest gold; tolerates part shade.
  • Trimming: every three to four weeks in summer for a tight shape.
  • Hazard: poisonous berries and leaves; thorny forms prick.

Is duranta the right hedge for you?

University of Florida extension describes duranta as drought tolerant once established, happy in most soils, and able to grow into a large shrub up to several metres if never pruned. It also says it cannot survive salt and that its fruit and leaves are poisonous to humans and dogs. In Florida it is predicted to be invasive and not recommended. In our plains it is mostly kept clipped, which stops it fruiting much.

Duranta vs conocarpus: which hedge?

Conocarpus grows faster and taller and is popular for screens, but it brings its own issues with roots and pollen, which our conocarpus guide covers. Duranta stays lower, is easier to keep at waist or chest height, needs more frequent trimming in summer to look neat, and wants regular watering to keep its colour. For a low boundary hedge, duranta usually suits a home better. For more choices, see our list of fast, low-water hedge plants.

How to propagate duranta

  1. In March to April or July to August, cut 15 to 20 cm tips from a healthy hedge. Wear gloves: many forms have thorns and the sap can irritate skin.
  2. Strip the lower leaves and push 6 to 8 cm deep into moist sand and soil, several to a tray.
  3. Keep in bright shade and just moist.
  4. Roots usually form in three to five weeks; new leaves are the sign.
  5. Pot them up, and plant out when they are 20 to 30 cm tall.

Success is high. Seed works but is slower and is the route by which duranta escapes into wild land, so cuttings are better.

How to plant a duranta hedge

  1. Dig a trench about 45 cm wide and 45 cm deep along the line.
  2. Mix the dug soil with a third compost.
  3. Plant every 30 to 45 cm, at the same depth they sat in the pot.
  4. Water deeply and mulch with dry leaves.
  5. Cut each plant back by a third after two weeks to make it branch low.

How to trim duranta

Trim every three to four weeks from March to October for a tight, dense hedge. Shape it slightly wider at the base than the top so light reaches the lower leaves; otherwise the base goes bare. Do one firmer cut in late February to reset the shape. Stop trimming by November; new growth before frost gets scorched.

String line trick

Tie a string between two sticks at the height you want and trim to it. A hedge cut by eye drifts higher every month, and after a year you are cutting into old woody stems that regrow slowly.

Duranta water requirement

First summer: water deeply two or three times a week, daily in 45C heat if the soil dries fast. Established hedges: a deep weekly soak in summer, every two weeks in winter. A thirsty hedge drops leaves and loses its gold. Our watering guide covers pots and beds.

Duranta growth rate

Fast in warm months: a well-fed, watered hedge fills in noticeably within a single season. Growth slows in winter and almost stops on frost nights in Punjab.

Poisonous: read this first

Duranta berries and leaves are poisonous to people and dogs, according to University of Florida extension, and many forms have thorns. Keep it trimmed so it does not fruit where children play, teach kids never to eat hedge berries, wear gloves when cutting, and bin clippings with berries. If a child or pet eats berries, call a doctor, vet or poison helpline at once. See our poisonous plants guide for others to watch.
