Sunflower in Pots (Surajmukhi): How to Grow It at Home

Want to know how to grow sunflower at home? Sow the seed straight into its final pot, give it six or more hours of hard sun, and expect the first flower roughly two to three months later. Sunflower (Surajmukhi) is grown from seed only: no cuttings, no layering, no grafting. That makes it one of the simplest flowers you can start this week, as long as the month is right for your city.

Before you start

  • Method: seed, sown where it will grow (it dislikes being moved)
  • Sun: 6 hours or more of direct sun
  • Pot: dwarf types 8 to 10 litres (10 to 12 inches); tall types 20 litres or more, or the ground
  • Mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand
  • First flower: about two to three months from sowing, dwarf types sooner
  • Life span: one season; it sets seed and dies

When should you sow sunflower in Pakistan and North India?

Sunflower hates frost and sulks in the worst of June. It grows best in mild warmth. Within the plains you get two windows, spring and late summer, and the coast stretches them.

ZoneSpring sowingSecond window
Coastal humid (Karachi)Late January to MarchSeptember to October
Hot dry (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur)Mid January to FebruaryLate August to September
Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi)February to early MarchAugust to early September
Sub-humid (Islamabad, Peshawar)MarchAugust
Hills (Murree, Shimla, Swat)April to May, after the last frostNot worth it

The logic: a spring plant should open its flower before May turns brutal; an autumn plant should flower before the December frost nights in Lahore or Delhi. In Multan and Sukkur, spring sowing has to be early because a 45C week will scorch a half-grown plant.

How do you sow sunflower seeds in a pot?

Buy ornamental flower seed from a nursery or seed shop. Roasted snack seeds won’t sprout, and raw bird-feed seed is a gamble. Hybrid seed saved from last year’s flower may not look like its parent.

  1. Fill a pot with a drainage hole using 2 parts soil, 1 part compost and 1 part coarse sand. Our potting mix guide explains why that sand matters.
  2. Water the mix the day before so it’s damp, not muddy.
  3. Push 2 or 3 seeds about 2 to 3 cm deep, pointed end down, a few centimetres apart.
  4. Keep the surface just moist. Seedlings usually show within a week or two in warm soil.
  5. When they have two true leaves, snip the weaker ones at soil level. One plant per pot. Pulling them disturbs the keeper.
  6. Put a stick in now for tall types. Staking later stabs the roots.

Why no transplanting? Sunflower drops a long taproot fast, and a moved seedling often stalls. If you must start in trays, use deep paper cups and plant the whole cup within two weeks.

Pick the right sunflower for a balcony

Look for the words “dwarf” or a height under about 60 cm on the packet. NC State Extension lists cultivars from about 1 to 2 feet up to 12 to 14 feet. A giant type in a 10 litre pot on a windy roof will snap or fall over; a dwarf type in the same pot looks neat and flowers sooner.

How much water and food does a potted sunflower need?

Use the finger test, not a timetable. Push a finger 3 cm into the mix; water only when it feels dry, then water until it runs out of the hole.

  • Spring (February to April): every 2 to 3 days in pots.
  • Hot dry weeks (40C and above): usually daily, early morning, and move the pot where it gets afternoon shade from a wall. A small pot in 45C sun can dry out by evening.
  • Autumn and cold nights: every 3 to 4 days; a frost night in Punjab will blacken soft leaves, so pull pots under a roof overhang when frost is forecast.

Feeding is simple. Mix a handful of compost into the top of the pot every three weeks until the bud appears. If you use a packaged fertiliser, a balanced NPK (equal numbers) early, then one a little higher in phosphorus and potassium when the bud forms. Too much nitrogen gives big leaves and a late, small flower.

Why is my sunflower not flowering, or turning yellow?

What you seeLikely reasonFirst fix
Tall, thin, leaning, no budToo little sunMove it to the sunniest spot you have
Lower leaves yellowOverwatering or a hungry plant in a small potLet the top dry; add compost
Leaves eaten, holesCaterpillars, beetles, snailsHand pick at dusk

Rusty spotsRust or leaf spotRemove spotted leaves, improve air flow
Bud forms, flower smallPot too small, heat stressBigger pot next season; sow earlier

NC State Extension names caterpillars, slugs, snails, beetles, powdery mildew, leaf spots and rust as the usual troubles. For aphids, try a garlic and chilli spray or a neem oil spray before anything stronger. And remember a flowering sunflower faces the morning sun rather than tracking all day, so don’t expect it to turn. Bent or broken stems rarely recover, so stake early on windy roofs and tie loosely with a strip of cloth, never wire.

How do you save seeds and when is the flower finished?

A flower lasts a week or two. When the back of the head turns yellow to brown and the petals drop, the seeds are filling. Tie a piece of old dupatta or net over the head; parrots and sparrows will find it otherwise. Cut the head when the back is brown and the seeds come out with a thumb rub, then dry it in shade for a week.

Want seeds to eat? A single pot plant gives a snack, not a harvest. For what soaked seeds offer, see our page on soaked pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

Worth knowing first

Tall plants on a roof edge can topple; keep heavy pots away from parapets where children play. If you spray anything beyond soap, neem or garlic, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets off the roof until it dries. Some people get an itchy rash from the rough leaves, so gloves help when staking. Anyone with a known seed allergy should skip eating home-saved seeds.

Sunflower growing questions people ask

How long does a sunflower take to grow from seed in a pot?

Most garden types flower about two to three months after sowing, and dwarf types sit at the quicker end. Cold soil or too little sun stretches that time.

Can I grow sunflower from a cutting?

No. It is an annual grown only from seed. Branches don’t root reliably, and there is no grafted sunflower sold for gardens.

Can I plant sunflower in June in Lahore?

You can, but plants struggle through heat and monsoon rain. A seed in August flowers in cooler October weather and usually looks far better.

Can sunflower grow indoors?

Not well. Even a bright window gives it far less than six hours of direct sun, so it stretches and flops.

Why is my sunflower drooping in the afternoon?

Usually it is heat, not thirst. If the soil is still damp and it perks up by evening, give it afternoon shade instead of more water.

Do sunflowers need a big pot?

Dwarf types are happy in 8 to 10 litres. Tall types need 20 litres or more, or better, the ground, plus a stake.

Will seeds from my flower grow next season?

They usually sprout, but seed from a hybrid may give different height or colour. Buy fresh packets if you want a predictable plant.

Is sunflower safe around pets?

It is not on the common lists of dangerous garden plants, and the seeds and petals are eaten. Still stop a pet from chewing the plant if it upsets its stomach.

How many times does a sunflower flower?

Single stem types give one big head. Branching types give several smaller flowers over a few weeks, then the plant is done.
