Periwinkle (Sadabahar) in Pots: Grow It at Home, Seed or Cutting

Periwinkle (Sadabahar) is the flower that laughs at a Multan June. Here is how to grow periwinkle at home: start from seed or a 10 cm stem cutting in spring, give it a well drained pot and as much sun as you have, and water less than you think. Most failures come from soggy soil, not heat. One more thing up front: every part of this plant is poisonous if eaten, so it is a flower to look at, never a leaf to chew.

The short version

  • Best method: seed for many plants; tip cuttings to copy a colour you like
  • Sun: full sun to light shade; 5 to 6 hours gives the most flowers
  • Pot: 4 to 6 litres (8 to 10 inches) per plant
  • Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand
  • First flowers: seedlings about two months after sowing; rooted cuttings sooner
  • Big enemy: waterlogging and root rot

When should you plant periwinkle in Pakistan and North India?

It wants warm soil to sprout and grow. Sow or plant when nights stay warm.

  • Karachi and the coast: almost year round; sow February to April, or September.
  • Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: February to March, so plants are settled before the heat.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: March to April. Seeds sown in January sit cold and rot.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar: April.
  • Hills: May, as a summer annual; frost ends it.

In the plains it often lives two or three years and keeps flowering, which is where the name sadabahar (ever spring) comes from. A hard Punjab winter can still knock it back.

Seed or cutting: which actually works?

From seed

NC State Extension describes it as grown from seed sown in warmth. Seed is cheap and gives sturdy plants.

  1. Fill a tray or small pots with a fine, gritty mix and water it.
  2. Scatter seeds and cover with a thin layer of mix, about 3 to 5 mm. They like darkness to sprout.
  3. Keep the tray warm and barely moist; mist rather than pour.
  4. Seedlings are slow and tiny for the first weeks. Don’t overwater them.
  5. Move each one to its own pot when it has 4 to 6 leaves.

From cuttings

  1. Cut a 10 cm soft tip from a healthy plant in spring or the start of the monsoon.
  2. Strip the lower leaves; keep the top 3 or 4.
  3. Push it 3 cm into damp coarse sand or a sand and cocopeat mix.
  4. Keep in bright shade. Roots usually form within a few weeks; a gentle tug that resists means it has taken.

Air layering and grafting aren’t needed for this plant. Self sown seedlings often pop up in nearby pots, which is the easiest source of all.

The drainage trick that saves it in the monsoon

Raise the pot on two bricks so water can leave the hole freely, and add one extra part of coarse sand to the mix. NC State Extension names Phytophthora root and stem rot as this plant’s main problem, and wet, airless soil is exactly what it likes.

How often should you water periwinkle?

  • Summer, 40 to 45C: when the top 3 cm is dry, usually every day or two in pots. Morning only.
  • Monsoon: often none for days. Tip out any saucer water.
  • Winter: once the mix is dry a finger deep, maybe weekly.

Feed lightly. A spoonful of compost on the surface each month in the growing season is plenty. A rich, nitrogen heavy feed gives leaves over flowers.

Why is my periwinkle not flowering or turning yellow?

Our mealybug and whitefly guide covers the pests in more detail.

Is periwinkle poisonous?

Yes. NC State Extension lists vinca alkaloids in all parts: flowers, leaves, stems, roots and seeds. Eating large amounts can cause vomiting, low blood pressure, tremors and worse, and it is listed as a problem for dogs and cats. The leaves are also sold online as a sugar remedy; we explain why that is risky in sadabahar leaves for diabetes. For other garden plants to keep away from toddlers, see our poisonous plants list.

Take care if

Children, cats or dogs might chew it: keep pots out of reach and wash hands after pruning. Never brew the leaves as a home remedy. If a child or pet has eaten some, call a doctor, vet or poison helpline straight away rather than waiting for symptoms. If you use any chemical spray, read the label and wear gloves.

Periwinkle care questions

Is periwinkle easy to grow at home?

Yes, as long as drainage is good. It handles heat and dry spells far better than it handles soggy soil.

How long do periwinkle seeds take to sprout?

Usually one to three weeks in warm soil. In cold soil they may not sprout at all, which is why spring sowing works best.

Can periwinkle grow in shade?

It grows in partial shade but flowers less. Aim for at least four to five hours of direct sun.

Should I pinch periwinkle?

Modern hybrids branch without it. Older types benefit from pinching the tips once when young to make a bushier plant.

Why does my periwinkle die in the monsoon?

Wet roots. Constant rain plus a saucer under the pot is the most common way to lose it.

Is sadabahar the same as vinca?

Gardeners call it vinca, but the botanical name is Catharanthus roseus. True Vinca is a different, trailing plant.

Can I keep periwinkle in a pot for years?

In the plains it often lasts two to three years. Older plants get woody, so root a few cuttings to replace them.

Is periwinkle safe for cats and dogs?

No. It is listed as a problem for dogs and cats, so keep it where pets can’t chew it.
