Jade Plant in Pots: How to Grow It at Home From a Leaf or Cutting

The fastest way to kill a jade plant is kindness with a watering can. Here is how to grow jade plant at home: use a gritty, fast draining mix in a pot with a hole, give it bright light with some afternoon shade, and water only when the mix is dry all the way down. New plants come easily from a single leaf or a stem piece left to dry for a few days. Flowers are rare indoors; expect a slow, sturdy little tree instead.

The short version

  • Best method: stem cuttings (fast) or leaf cuttings (slow but easy)
  • Light: bright light; morning sun, afternoon shade in summer
  • Pot: shallow and wide; 1 to 3 litres (5 to 7 inches) for a young plant, clay is best
  • Mix: 1 part soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part brick grit or pumice, a little compost
  • Growth: slow; a cutting becomes a small bush in a year or two
  • Pets: listed as a problem for cats and dogs

NC State Extension suggests bright light with some afternoon shade indoors and partial shade outdoors.

How do you propagate a jade plant?

NC State Extension lists both leaf and stem cuttings. Best months are February to April and October, when it’s warm but not scorching.

Stem cutting (a plant you can see in months)

  1. Cut a 8 to 12 cm branch tip with a clean blade, just above a joint on the mother plant.
  2. Pull off the lowest 2 or 3 leaves.
  3. Leave it in shade for 3 to 7 days until the cut end looks dry and sealed. Skipping this is why cuttings rot.
  4. Push 2 to 3 cm into dry gritty mix. Don’t water for a week.
  5. Then water lightly whenever the mix is dry. A firm tug after three to four weeks tells you it has rooted.

Leaf cutting (patience version)

  1. Twist off a plump, whole leaf, including the base where it joined the stem.
  2. Let it dry for 2 to 3 days.
  3. Lay it on top of damp gritty mix in bright shade.
  4. Mist the surface lightly when dry. Tiny roots and a rosette appear over several weeks; a usable plant takes many months.

Seed, layering and grafting aren’t practical for jade at home. Pruned branch tips from shaping the plant in spring are free cutting material, so nothing needs to go in the bin.

The chopstick test

Push a plain wooden chopstick to the bottom of the pot and leave it for ten minutes. Pull it out: if it comes out dark or with soil stuck to it, wait. If it comes out clean and dry, water until it runs from the hole, then don’t water again until the chopstick is dry once more. This beats any calendar.

How often should you water jade?

  • Spring and autumn: roughly every 7 to 10 days in pots, by the chopstick test.
  • Summer (40C and above): it may need water every 4 to 6 days in a small clay pot in sun, but in shade it can go longer. Water early morning.
  • Monsoon: keep it under cover; rain on a jade pot for a week is the classic killer.
  • Winter: NC State Extension advises cutting back water from autumn to late winter. Every 2 to 4 weeks is often enough.

Feed little: a pinch of compost on the surface in spring, or a cactus type liquid feed at half strength two or three times in the warm months. Our potting mix guide explains why a heavy garden soil suffocates succulents.

Why is my jade plant dropping leaves or turning yellow?

NC State Extension also lists aphids, scale and spider mites as occasional pests. Test any spray, neem included, on one leaf first, because the waxy coating on succulents can mark.

Why doesn’t my jade plant flower?

NC State Extension notes it rarely blooms indoors. Outdoors, mature plants make small white to pink star clusters. Flowering needs an older plant, plenty of light, and a dry, cool spell with long nights, which a Punjab or Peshawar winter on a covered balcony can give. Indoors under tube lights, it usually won’t happen, and the plant is fine anyway.

Worth knowing first

Jade is listed as a problem for dogs, cats and horses, so keep it out of reach and call a vet if a pet eats some. Don’t let small children eat the leaves. Heavy clay pots on a balcony ledge can fall; keep them inside the railing. If you use any chemical insecticide, follow the label and wear gloves. The idea that jade brings money is a feng shui belief, not a growing fact.

Jade plant questions people ask

How often should I water a jade plant in summer?

Only when the mix is dry to the bottom. In a hot sunny spot that may be every 4 to 6 days; in shade, longer.

Can a jade plant grow from a single leaf?

Yes. A whole leaf dried for 2 to 3 days and laid on gritty mix usually sprouts, though it takes months to become a small plant.

Can jade plant take direct sun?

Morning sun, yes. Afternoon sun in a plains summer can burn it, especially if it was kept indoors before.

Why are my jade plant leaves falling off?

Overwatering is the usual cause, then sudden moves or cold. Check the stem base for softness.

Should I put jade cuttings in water?

They can root in water, but they rot more often. Dry soil after callusing is more reliable.

How do I make my jade plant bushy?

Pinch or cut branch tips in spring. Two new shoots usually grow from below each cut.

Is jade plant lucky?

In feng shui tradition it is called a money plant, but that is belief, not something the plant does.

Is jade plant toxic to cats?

Yes, it is listed as a problem for cats and dogs. Keep it out of their reach.
