How to Grow Philodendron: Light, Water and Easy Cuttings

Philodendron forgives more mistakes than almost any houseplant, which is why it is the one most people manage to keep alive. Give it bright light without direct afternoon sun, water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, and root a few node cuttings in a glass of water whenever it gets straggly.

In brief

  • Two kinds: climbing heartleaf types (vines) and self heading types (big upright clumps like Xanadu and split leaf).
  • Light: north window or set back from an east window.
  • Pot: 6 inch (1.5 litre) for a heartleaf vine; 10 to 12 inch (8 to 12 litre) for a self heading plant.
  • Water: when the top 3 to 4 cm is dry.
  • Propagate: March to September, node cuttings in water.
  • Safety: toxic to cats, dogs and children if chewed.

Heartleaf or self heading: why it matters

The trailing heartleaf philodendron is the one on bookshelves and moss poles, often confused with money plant (pothos). It roots from almost any stem node. Self heading types grow from a central stem with big leaves fanning out; they get wide, need a larger pot, and propagate by division or by rooting side shoots rather than snipping vine bits.

A quick way to tell a heartleaf from a money plant: philodendron’s new leaves come out wrapped in a thin papery sheath that later dries and falls, and the leaves are softer and more heart shaped.

Which window should a philodendron sit in?

  • North: right at the window, all year. Best for steady growth.
  • East: a metre back, or on the sill behind a sheer curtain.
  • South: fine in winter; move it back from April to September.
  • West: keep it at least 2 metres away; the 3 pm summer sun scorches leaves yellow.

Heartleaf types survive in dimmer rooms, but their stems stretch and the gap between leaves gets long. Self heading types need brighter light to keep their size.

By city

Karachi’s humid air suits it and a shaded balcony works year round. In Multan, Sukkur or Bahawalpur, keep it indoors in summer and away from the AC, and set the pot on a pebble tray. In Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi and Islamabad, pull it away from window glass on cold January nights; tropical leaves blacken if they touch frosty glass. In the hills it is an indoor plant only.

How often should you water a philodendron?

Push a finger in. Dry to the second knuckle means water until it runs out the bottom, then empty the saucer.

Best soil for philodendron

Airy and rich. A good mix is 2 parts cocopeat, 1 part compost, 1 part garden soil and 1 part perlite or small bark chips. Heavy clay mitti stays wet and rots roots. See the potting mix ratio guide for how to adjust for your city. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength monthly from March to October.

How to propagate philodendron step by step

Heartleaf: node cuttings in water

  1. Find a node, the small bump on the stem where a leaf joins, often with a brown root nub.
  2. Cut 1 cm below it, keeping a piece with 2 or 3 nodes and 1 or 2 leaves.
  3. Put it in a glass of clean water so the nodes are under water and the leaves above.
  4. Change the water every week. Bright shade, not sun.
  5. Roots usually show in 1 to 3 weeks in summer. Pot it when roots reach 5 to 8 cm.
  6. Plant three or four cuttings together for a fuller pot.

Self heading: division or offsets

  1. In March or April, unpot the plant and look for side shoots with their own roots.
  2. Cut them free with a clean knife.
  3. Pot each into a 6 inch pot and keep it shaded and lightly moist for two weeks.

Weekly water change, and why

Cuttings left in the same water for a month often rot at the node. The water goes stale and low in oxygen. Changing it weekly, and rinsing the glass, keeps roots white and firm. A dark glass or bottle also slows algae. If roots look brown and slimy, cut back to clean stem and start again.

Mealybugs, scale and fungus gnats are the usual pests. Here is what to do about mealybugs, whitefly and gnats in pots.

Is philodendron toxic to cats, dogs and children?

Yes. The ASPCA lists heartleaf philodendron as toxic to cats and dogs because of insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause pain and swelling of the mouth, drooling, vomiting and trouble swallowing. Trailing vines are easy for cats to bat and chew, so hang them high. Our list of plants that are poisonous to kids and pets covers the rest of the common ones.

Worth knowing first

If a child chews philodendron, rinse and wipe the mouth and call a doctor or poison advice line, more urgently if there is swelling, drooling or any difficulty breathing or swallowing. Call a vet for pets. Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap can irritate skin, and keep neem or any chemical spray in its labelled bottle, used with gloves and away from children.

Philodendron care questions

How much light does a philodendron need?

Bright indirect light. A north window or a spot a metre back from an east window suits most flats.

Can philodendron grow in water forever?

Heartleaf types can live in water for a long time if you change it weekly, but they grow faster and fuller in soil.

How often should I water philodendron in summer?

Every 3 to 4 days in a hot plains summer, when the top few centimetres are dry. Always empty the saucer.

Is philodendron the same as money plant?

No. Money plant is usually pothos (Epipremnum). They look alike and need similar care, but are different plants.

Why is my philodendron leggy?

Not enough light. Move it closer to a window, then cut the long stems back and root the cuttings to fill the pot.

Does philodendron need a moss pole?

Climbing types grow bigger leaves when they climb a moss or coir pole. It is optional, not needed for health.

Can philodendron live in an AC room?

Yes, if it is not in the direct air stream. Use a pebble tray because AC dries the air.

What fertilizer is best for philodendron?

A balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength monthly in the growing season, plus a little compost on top in spring.
