How to Grow Dracaena (Corn Plant, Song of India) Indoors
If your dracaena has brown leaf tips, the plant is usually fine and the water is the problem. Dracaenas, including corn plant and Song of India, are sensitive to fluoride and salt build up, so the tap water many Pakistani and Indian homes use slowly burns the tips. Switch the water, place it in bright filtered light, and it becomes one of the easiest tall plants you can own.
The short version
- Common types: corn plant (Dracaena fragrans), Song of India (Dracaena reflexa), dragon tree (Dracaena marginata).
- Light: bright to moderate filtered light; no hot direct sun.
- Pot: 10 to 14 inch (8 to 15 litre) for a floor plant.
- Water: evenly moist in summer, much less in winter; RO, rain or AC water if your tap is salty.
- Propagate: cane or tip cuttings, April to August.
- Safety: mildly toxic to cats and dogs.

Why does dracaena get brown tips?
NC State extension notes that dracaena is sensitive to fluorides and salts, and suggests non fluoridated water and flushing the soil each month. It adds that low humidity in heated rooms also browns tips. Hard borewell water in Lahore, Multan and Delhi carries plenty of salt. You see it as white crust on the pot rim and a brown band at each leaf tip.
The fix has three parts. Water with collected AC condensate, RO water or rainwater. Once a month, pour plain water through the pot until it runs out freely for a minute to wash salts away. Trim old brown tips at an angle with clean scissors, leaving a hair of brown so you do not cut into live tissue. The tips already brown will not turn green; watch new leaves instead. Our guide to using RO waste water and AC water for plants explains which water is safe for which plants.
The cheap water switch
Hang a bucket under your split AC’s drain pipe for one day in June or July and you will usually collect enough soft water for every dracaena in the house for a week. Do not use RO reject (waste) water for this plant: it carries more salt than tap water, not less.
Which window works for dracaena in a flat?
- East: the best all round spot, a metre back from the glass.
- North: good for corn plant and dragon tree; Song of India loses its yellow stripes in low light.
- South: fine behind a sheer curtain, best in winter.
- West: keep it well back; afternoon summer sun scorches leaves.
NC State notes that too little light makes leaves narrow. Slow, thin, pale new growth means move it closer.
Climate notes
Karachi homes give it the humidity it likes. In hot, dry Multan, Sukkur and Bahawalpur, keep it indoors from May to September and away from AC vents. On the Punjab plains and in Delhi, a verandah is fine in spring and autumn, but it should be indoors before December; NC State advises keeping it above about 10°C, and it grows best between about 21 and 27°C. In Islamabad, Peshawar and the hills it is an indoor plant all winter.
How often should you water dracaena?
| Season | How often | Note |
|---|---|---|
| April to September | When top 2 to 3 cm is dry, often weekly | Keep evenly moist |
| October to November | Every 10 days or so | Growth slows |
| December to February | Every 2 to 3 weeks | Let the top third dry |
Overwatering in winter is the most common way people kill a dracaena. Seasonal rules for all pots are in how often to water potted plants.
Best soil for dracaena
A free draining mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part cocopeat and 1 part coarse sand or perlite. Avoid superphosphate based feeds, which can carry fluoride. A balanced liquid feed at half strength every 4 to 6 weeks from March to September is plenty. The potting mix guide has more detail.
How to propagate dracaena
Tip cutting (when the plant hits the ceiling)
- In April to August, cut the top 15 to 25 cm of stem with a clean saw or knife.
- Strip the lowest few leaves.
- Stand the cutting in a jar of water or plant it in moist sand and cocopeat.
- Roots usually form in 3 to 6 weeks. Pot it when roots are a few centimetres long.
Cane pieces
- Cut the bare stem into pieces 8 to 10 cm long. Mark which end was up.
- Plant each piece upright, up end on top, a third deep in moist sand and cocopeat.
- Keep warm and shaded. New shoots break from buds near the top in 4 to 8 weeks.
The cut stump left in the pot usually sprouts two or three new heads, which makes the plant bushier. Seal very thick cuts with a dab of candle wax to reduce drying.
Why are dracaena leaves turning yellow?
| Sign | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom leaves yellow and drop slowly | Normal ageing | Pull off when fully yellow |
| Many leaves yellow, soggy soil | Overwatering | Let it dry, check drainage |
| Brown tips and edges | Fluoride, salts, dry air | Softer water, monthly flush |
| Bleached or burnt patches | Direct sun | Move back from glass |
| Cottony clumps, sticky leaves | Mealybugs, scale | Wipe off, neem spray |
Mealybugs and thrips are the usual pests. The pot pests guide covers organic first steps.
Is dracaena toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, mildly. The ASPCA lists corn plant as toxic to cats and dogs because of saponins, with vomiting, drooling, low appetite and, in cats, dilated pupils. NC State rates it low severity for people, mainly mouth and stomach irritation. Keep pets from chewing it and wash hands after pruning, as the sap can irritate skin.
Grow it or skip it?
| Home | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bright flat, soft water available | Plant | Tall, slow, easy |
| Only hard tap water | Maybe | Expect brown tips unless you flush |
| Cat that chews leaves | Skip | Pick a pet safe plant |
More indoor plants are in Phool aur Paudhe.
Call a vet if a cat or dog has chewed dracaena and is vomiting or drooling. A child who chews it may get an upset mouth or stomach: rinse the mouth and call a doctor if symptoms are more than mild. Use gloves when cutting thick canes, and if you ever use a chemical spray, follow the label, spray outdoors, and keep children and pets away until it dries.
Dracaena care questions
Why are the tips of my dracaena leaves brown?
Usually fluoride or salt in tap water, sometimes dry air. Switch to AC, rain or RO water and flush the pot monthly.
How much light does dracaena need?
Bright to moderate filtered light. A metre back from an east window is ideal; avoid hot direct sun.
How often should I water dracaena?
Roughly weekly in summer when the top few centimetres dry, and only every two to three weeks in winter.
Can I cut the top off a tall dracaena?
Yes. Cut at the height you want; the stump sprouts new heads and the top roots as a new plant.
Can dracaena grow in water?
Cuttings root in water and lucky bamboo, a dracaena, lives in water long term. Most others grow better once potted.
Is Song of India hard to grow?
No, but it needs more light than corn plant to keep its yellow stripes, and it can get leggy without pruning.
What is the best soil for dracaena?
A free draining mix with compost, cocopeat and sand or perlite, in a pot with good holes.
Why is my dracaena drooping?
Either very dry soil or rotten roots from soggy soil. Check the soil before you water.
