How to Grow Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane) Safely Indoors
Dieffenbachia (dumb cane) is one of the easiest big leaved plants for a Pakistani flat, and one of the few you must keep out of a toddler’s reach. Its sap can burn and swell the mouth. Put it in bright light near an east or north window, let the top inch of soil dry between waterings, and grow new plants from cane pieces when it gets leggy.
Before you start
- Light: bright indirect light, about 2 metres from an east window or right beside a north one.
- Pot: 8 to 10 inch (4 to 8 litre) pot with drainage.
- Water: when the top inch is dry; less in winter.
- Repot or propagate: March to April or late August to September.
- Safety: toxic to children, cats and dogs. Wear gloves when cutting.

Is dieffenbachia safe at home with kids and pets?
Not if they can reach it. NC State rates it a high severity poison: its sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that can burn and swell the lips, tongue and throat, and sap in the eye can harm the cornea. The ASPCA lists it as toxic to cats and dogs, with drooling, vomiting and trouble swallowing.
So the rule is simple. Place it on a high stand or in a room toddlers do not use, pick up fallen leaves, and wash hands after handling it. For the full list of risky home plants, see poisonous plants for kids and pets.
Which window works in a Pakistani flat?
Dieffenbachia likes plenty of light without hot direct sun.
- North window: right beside it, all year. The steadiest choice.
- East window: 1 to 2 metres back, or behind a sheer curtain. Morning sun is gentle enough.
- South window: good from November to February; pull it back in summer.
- West window: avoid. Afternoon sun in May and June bleaches and scorches leaves.
Too little light shows as long bare stems, small new leaves and fading variegation. Turn the pot a quarter each week so it does not lean.
Indoor climates by region
In Karachi’s humidity it grows fast and can live on a shaded balcony. In Multan, Sukkur or Bahawalpur, keep it indoors in summer away from the AC outlet, which dries leaf edges. In Lahore, Delhi and Islamabad, keep it away from cold window glass and doors in December and January; NC State advises protecting it from cold draughts.
How often should you water dieffenbachia?
NC State advises watering thoroughly, then letting the top inch dry before watering again. In practice:
| Season | Typical interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| April to June heat | Every 3 to 5 days | Check the soil, not the calendar |
| Monsoon | Every 5 to 7 days | Humid air slows drying |
| October to November | Weekly | Growth slows |
| December to February | Every 10 to 14 days | Cold wet roots rot fast |
Empty the saucer 20 minutes after watering. More on seasonal watering in this watering guide.
Best soil for dieffenbachia
It wants loose, rich, well drained soil. A good mix: 2 parts garden soil, 2 parts compost, 1 part cocopeat, 1 part coarse sand or perlite. Our potting mix guide explains each ingredient. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month from March to October, nothing in winter.
How to propagate dieffenbachia step by step
Wear gloves for all of these, and wipe your blade after.
Tip cutting
- Cut the top 12 to 15 cm of a leggy stem, just below a node.
- Let the cut dry for a few hours.
- Stand it in water or push it into moist cocopeat and sand. Bright shade.
- Roots usually show in 3 to 6 weeks in warm months.
Cane pieces (gives the most plants)
- Cut the bare cane left behind into pieces 5 to 8 cm long, each with at least one node (the ring scar).
- Lay them sideways, half buried, in a tray of moist sand and cocopeat, node facing up.
- Cover loosely with clear plastic, keep warm and shaded.
- New shoots appear from the nodes in about 4 to 8 weeks. Pot each when it has two or three leaves.
The stump left in the original pot also resprouts if you keep watering it lightly.
Turn one leggy plant into five
Do not throw away a dieffenbachia that has become a bare pole with leaves on top. In April, cut the top off to root, chop the pole into node pieces, and leave a 10 cm stump in the pot. Within a couple of months you will usually have a bushy original plus several new ones. Spring and early monsoon give the fastest results.
Why are dieffenbachia leaves turning yellow or brown?
| Sign | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Lower leaves yellow one by one | Normal ageing | Remove with gloves |
| Many leaves yellow, soil wet | Overwatering, root rot | Let dry, check roots |
| Brown crispy edges | Dry air, AC, salty water | Pebble tray, flush soil monthly |
| Pale, bleached patches | Direct sun | Move back from window |
| Fine webbing, speckled leaves | Spider mites | Wash leaves, neem spray |
Spider mites, mealybugs and scale are the usual pests indoors. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth weekly. Here is the full routine for mealybugs and other pot pests.
Grow it or skip it?
| Home | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Adults only, bright flat | Plant | Fast, forgiving, big leaves |
| Older children who know not to chew plants | Maybe | High shelf, clear rules |
| Toddler, puppy or a cat that chews | Skip | Choose a pet safe plant instead |

If a child chews dieffenbachia, wipe the mouth, give a little water to rinse, and call a doctor or poison advice line, especially if there is swelling, drooling or trouble swallowing or breathing; trouble breathing is an emergency. Sap in an eye: rinse with running water for several minutes and see a doctor. For pets, call a vet straight away.
Dieffenbachia questions people search
Is dieffenbachia poisonous to cats and dogs?
Yes. It causes mouth pain, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing in pets. Call a vet if they chew it.
How much light does dieffenbachia need indoors?
Bright indirect light. Beside a north window or a little back from an east window is ideal in South Asian flats.
How often should I water dieffenbachia?
When the top inch of soil is dry, roughly every 3 to 7 days in summer and every 10 to 14 days in winter.
Can dieffenbachia grow in water?
A cutting roots in water and can live there for months, but it grows stronger once potted in soil.
Why is my dieffenbachia drooping?
Either very dry soil or rotting roots from wet soil. Feel the soil first; the fix is opposite for each.
Should I cut off yellow dieffenbachia leaves?
Yes, cut them at the base with gloves on. A yellow leaf will not turn green again.
Why is it called dumb cane?
Because chewing it can swell the mouth and throat enough to make speaking hard for a while.
Can dieffenbachia go outside?
In Karachi, on a shaded balcony, yes. On the plains it scorches in summer sun and suffers on cold winter nights.
