How to Grow Petunia From Seed or Seedlings: Pots and Care

How to grow petunia, in one line: sow the dust fine seed on the surface in October or November, or buy seedlings in November, give the pots six or more hours of sun, and cut the plants back by about half in February for a second wave of flowers. On the plains, petunias bloom from about January until April heat finishes them. Here is whether seed is worth the trouble, and the small habits that keep a basket full.

In brief

  • Sow: October to November (plains), October to December (Karachi), September to October (Islamabad, Peshawar), March to April (hills, as a summer flower)
  • Germination: about 1 to 3 weeks, needs light, so do not cover seed
  • Pot: 8 inch (3 to 4 litres) for one plant; a 12 inch basket holds three
  • Sun: 6 hours or more; shade gives spindly plants and few flowers
  • First flowers: roughly 10 to 12 weeks from sowing
  • Annual or perennial: grown as an annual here; summer heat ends it

Seed or nursery seedlings: the honest answer for beginners

Buy seedlings for your first year. Petunia seed is so fine that a packet looks almost empty, the seedlings stay tiny for weeks, and they are prone to collapsing in damp mix. A tray of nursery seedlings in November gives you flowering plants by January with none of that risk.

Seed makes sense once you have a bright, sheltered spot and want colours the nursery does not carry, or a lot of plants for a bed. Many packets are F1 hybrids; they flower beautifully, but seed saved from them will not come true.

How to grow petunia from seed

  1. Fill a shallow tray with fine, damp seed mix (sieved compost with cocopeat works). See seed starting at home for the mix.
  2. Mix the seed with a pinch of dry fine sand and sprinkle it evenly over the surface.
  3. Press gently with your palm. Do not cover. The seed needs light to sprout.
  4. Water from below: stand the tray in a dish of water for a few minutes. Mist the top if it dries.
  5. Keep in bright light without harsh noon sun. In mild October temperatures, sprouts usually appear in one to three weeks.
  6. When seedlings have 4 to 6 true leaves, prick them out into small cups, then into final pots when roots fill the cup.

The cling film trick for dust seed

Cover the sown tray loosely with cling film or a clear bag to hold humidity, but lift it a little every day for air and remove it as soon as most seeds sprout. Left on too long, it invites damping off, the fungus that topples seedlings at soil level overnight.

Pot, mix and where to put it

Petunias do best in containers that drain fast. Use 2 parts soil, 1 part compost and 1 part cocopeat or sand; our potting mix guide explains the ratio. Clemson Extension is blunt about sun: full sun, or spindly plants with few blooms.

Watering and feeding through the season

  • Nov to Jan: water when the top 2 to 3 cm is dry, in the morning. Frost nights: move baskets under a roof edge.
  • Feb to Mar: growth speeds up; water every one to two days in small pots.
  • April (35°C plus): daily, sometimes twice in baskets. Plants start to fade; enjoy the last flush.
  • Feeding: compost at potting, then a balanced liquid feed every two to three weeks once buds appear. Too much nitrogen gives leaves, not flowers.

Pinching, deadheading and the February cut

Pinch the tip of each young plant once, about an inch, when you pot it up. It branches into a bushier mound with many more flower points.

Deadhead large flowered types: pull off faded blooms with the little green pod behind them. Many small flowered and trailing kinds drop old flowers on their own.

The February haircut feels brutal. Three weeks later, the plant looks new.

By February, many plants are leggy, with flowers only at the tips of long bare stems. Cut each stem back by roughly a third to a half, leaving some leaves on every stem, then feed and water well. Clemson recommends this same cut back for leggy petunias; on our plains it sets up a second, fuller flush in March, right when the weather is at its best.

Pests and problems

  • Aphids: clusters on buds. Wash off with a hose; mild soap spray if they return.
  • Grey mould in foggy weeks: soggy dead flowers turn fuzzy. Pick them off, water the soil only.
  • Caterpillars: holes in petals in spring. Hand pick in the evening.

Propagation from cuttings, and saving seed

Trailing petunias root easily from 8 to 10 cm tip cuttings: strip the lower leaves, push into damp sand or cocopeat in shade, and keep moist. Roots usually form within a few weeks. It is a cheap way to fill extra baskets from one good plant.

To save seed, let a few flowers dry on the plant until the pod turns brown and starts to split. Shake the seeds onto paper, dry them for a week and store in a labelled envelope. Remember: seed from hybrid plants gives mixed results.

Worth knowing first

Sprays used on petunias can harm children and pets. Read the label of anything stronger than soapy water, wear gloves, and keep children and pets away until it dries. Hang baskets where a fall cannot hit anyone, and check hooks each season.

Petunia questions

How do you grow petunia from seed at home?

Sprinkle the seed on the surface of damp seed mix, press it in without covering, and water from below. Keep it bright and humid until it sprouts in one to three weeks.

When should petunia seeds be sown in Pakistan?

October to November on the plains, October to December in Karachi, and earlier in Islamabad. In the hills, sow in spring.

How long does petunia take to flower?

About 10 to 12 weeks from sowing. Nursery seedlings bought in November usually flower by January.

Is petunia annual or perennial?

Here it is grown as an annual. It is a tender perennial botanically, but our summer heat and humidity end most plants by May.

How often should I water petunias in pots?

When the top 2 to 3 cm is dry: every few days in winter, daily in April. Baskets dry fastest.

Why are my petunias sticky?

Petunia stems and leaves are naturally a little sticky. Heavy stickiness with tiny insects on buds means aphids.

Can petunias grow in shade?

Not well. They need about six hours of sun; in shade, try pansy or viola instead.

How do I save petunia seeds?

Let a pod dry brown on the plant, shake out the seed, dry it a week and store it cool. Hybrid seed may not match the parent.

Should I deadhead petunias?

Yes for large flowered types; it keeps new buds coming. Many small trailing types clean themselves.
