How to Grow Adenium (Desert Rose): Seed, Cuttings, Winter Care
Adenium dies of kindness far more often than of neglect. To grow adenium (desert rose) well, give it the hottest, sunniest spot you have, a very gritty mix in a pot that drains instantly, generous water in summer, and almost none in the cold months. That one rule, dry in winter, saves more plants than any fertiliser.
Quick facts
- Names: Adenium, Desert Rose, Adenium obesum.
- Methods: seed (best fat base), cuttings (fast, thin base), grafting (named colours).
- Pot: wide and shallow; 8 to 10 inches for a young plant, a bonsai bowl later.
- Mix: one part soil, one part coarse sand, one part brick chips or perlite, a little compost.
- Sun: six hours or more of direct sun, per NC State and Florida extension.
- Warning: the sap is poisonous. Keep it away from children and pets.

Where does adenium grow well?
NC State extension says it is hardy only in frost-free climates and should come indoors once nights fall to about 13C (55F). Florida extension calls it sensitive below about 4C (40F). In practice:
| Zone | Verdict | Winter plan |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | Plant: may flower nearly all year | Shelter from monsoon downpours |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Plant: summer is its happiest time | Dry and sheltered from December to January |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Plant in pots only | Bring under a roof or to a sunny sill on cold nights |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Maybe: pots indoors all winter | Bright indoor window, bone dry |
| Hills | Skip outdoors | Windowsill plant only |
Seed, cutting or graft: which should you choose?
| Method | Plant / Maybe / Skip | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Seed | Plant | Builds the fat caudex fastest; colour is a surprise |
| Cuttings | Maybe | Quick flowers, but the base stays slim for years |
| Grafting | Maybe | The way named hybrids are sold; a skill to learn |
| Buying a grafted plant | Plant | Easiest route to a known colour |
How to grow adenium from seed
- Sow fresh seed from March to June, when nights are warm.
- Lay seeds flat on moist, gritty mix and cover with a thin layer of the same.
- Keep warm and just moist. Fresh seed usually sprouts within a week or two.
- Give bright light from the day they sprout, with full sun after a few weeks.
- Pot them up singly after two to three months.
How to grow adenium from cuttings
- In spring or early summer, cut a 15 to 20 cm stem with gloves on.
- Let the cut end dry for two to three days in the shade until sealed.
- Plant 4 to 5 cm deep in barely damp sand and brick chip mix.
- Water lightly only when the mix is dry. Roots usually form in three to six weeks in heat.
Grafting means joining a cutting of a named hybrid onto a seedling rootstock; NC State notes the most desirable cultivars are grafted. It is worth learning once you have spare seedlings.
Adenium care: water by season
Summer (April to September): water deeply whenever the mix is dry, which can be every two to three days at 45C. Monsoon: shelter from long rains and water only if dry. October to November: water less as days cool. December to January: in Punjab and Islamabad, stop watering once leaves drop, or give a small sip once a month on a warm day. Resume in March when new leaves show. Our seasonal watering guide explains the logic.
The squeeze test
Squeeze the caudex gently with two fingers. Firm means healthy. Wrinkled and soft but dry means thirsty, so water. Soft and mushy, or a sour smell at the base, means rot: unpot at once, cut back to clean white tissue, dry for days and replant in dry grit.
Best fertiliser for adenium
Feed only while it is growing, March to September. A diluted balanced liquid feed every two to three weeks, with a phosphorus and potash rich bloom feed before flowering, works well. A little compost in the mix is enough; rich soil holds too much water.
When should you prune adenium?
Prune in March to April, as growth restarts. Each cut branch usually splits into several, and flowers form at those tips. Prune in autumn or winter and the cuts stay open through cold, damp weeks, invite rot, and the new shoots cannot grow before spring. Keep fresh cuts dry for several days.
Why is my adenium not flowering, and why are leaves yellow?
| Sign | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No flowers | Under six hours of sun, or too much nitrogen | Sunniest spot, bloom feed |
| Yellow leaves in autumn | Normal dormancy | Water less |
| Yellow leaves in summer, wet mix | Overwatering, root rot | Check roots, regrit the pot |
| White fluff on roots | Root mealybugs | Wash roots, replace mix |
| Chewed leaves | Oleander caterpillars | Hand pick with gloves |
Root mealybugs are named by NC State, and Florida extension lists scale and oleander caterpillars.
Adenium sap contains cardiac glycosides. NC State lists vomiting, diarrhoea and irregular heartbeat if eaten, and it is listed as a problem for cats and dogs. Its sap also irritates skin and eyes. Wear gloves for cuttings and pruning, wash hands, keep pots out of children’s reach, and never use it near food. If a child or pet chews it, call a doctor, vet or poison helpline straight away. Our poisonous plants guide covers its cousin kaner too.

Desert rose questions people ask
Can adenium grow from cuttings?
Yes. Dry a 15 to 20 cm cutting for two to three days, then plant it in gritty mix and water sparingly. It roots well in summer heat, but the base stays slimmer than a seedling’s.
How do I care for an adenium plant?
Full sun, a gritty fast-draining mix, deep watering in summer only when dry, and almost no water in the cold months.
Why is my adenium not flowering?
Most often too little sun. Other causes are too much nitrogen, a young cutting, or pruning at the wrong time.
Why are my adenium leaves turning yellow?
In autumn it is normal dormancy. In summer it usually means wet roots; check for rot.
How do I care for adenium in winter?
Keep it dry and above frost. In Punjab and Islamabad, bring pots indoors to a bright window on cold nights and water rarely.
Why is my adenium caudex soft?
Soft and wrinkled but dry is thirst. Soft and mushy is rot, which needs unpotting and cutting back to clean tissue.
How do I make the adenium base fat?
Grow from seed, give full sun and summer water, and raise the plant a little at each repotting to show the base.
Is adenium poisonous to dogs and cats?
Yes. Keep it out of reach and call a vet at once if a pet chews it.
When should I repot adenium?
In spring, as growth starts, into a pot only a little bigger, with fresh gritty mix.
