How to Grow Butterfly Pea Plant (Aparajita): Seed, Support, Care

If you want to know how to grow butterfly pea plant (Aparajita) on a balcony, the short answer is: soak the seed overnight, sow it in March or April in a pot with a railing or net beside it, give it six hours of sun, and expect the first blue flowers in about two months. It is one of the easiest flowering climbers in our plains, as long as you respect two things: frost and a weak railing.

Before you start

  • Plant type: perennial twining climber, often grown as a one or two season vine
  • Pot size: 12 to 15 litres (10 to 12 inch) minimum; 20 litres if you want a full railing
  • Sun: 6 hours or more; afternoon shade helps in Multan and Sukkur
  • Sowing months: March to May on the plains, February end in Karachi, April to June in the hills
  • First flowers: roughly 7 to 10 weeks after sowing
  • Support: net, string or railing at least 1.5 m tall

Which Aparajita should you buy: single or double?

Nurseries sell two forms. The single flower looks like a small blue conch with a white or yellow throat. The double has layered petals and looks fuller. Both twine, both flower, and the care is identical. The double often sets fewer pods, so if you want seed for next year, keep at least one single plant. White and pale mauve forms exist too, but if your aim is blue tea, buy blue.

Uses, the colour trick and the honest health picture already sit in our post on blue tea and Aprajita claims. This page stays with the plant itself.

How do you grow butterfly pea from seed?

Seed is the reliable route. The coat is hard, so dry seed sown straight can sit for weeks.

  1. Rub each seed lightly on sandpaper or a rough tile, just enough to dull a spot on the coat.
  2. Soak in lukewarm water for 8 to 12 hours. Swollen seeds go in; ones still hard get another soak.
  3. Fill the pot with a mix of 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost and 1 part coarse sand or cocopeat. Our potting mix ratio guide explains why each part matters.
  4. Sow 2 or 3 seeds about 1.5 cm deep. Water once, then keep the surface just damp.
  5. Expect sprouts in 7 to 14 days when nights stay above about 20°C. Keep the strongest seedling.
  6. Put the support in now, not later. Tendrils of a twiner find string by touch within days.

Can you grow butterfly pea from cuttings?

Yes, but it is slower and less certain than seed. Take a 15 to 20 cm piece of semi woody stem in June or July, strip the lower leaves, and push it into damp sand or a sand and cocopeat mix in light shade. Cover with a clear bag to hold humidity. Some roots appear in three to five weeks; a fair share of cuttings simply rot. Layering works better: pin a low stem into a small pot of soil beside the parent, wait until new leaves appear at the pinned point, then cut it free.

What support does a butterfly pea vine need?

Butterfly pea stems can run several metres in a good season. A single plant on a 1.5 m net is light. Three or four plants in big pots along a railing, wet after monsoon rain, are heavier than they look, and the twining stems lock onto anything.

SupportVerdictWhy
Nylon or jute net on a framePlantLight, cheap, easy to clear in winter
Iron balcony grillPlantStrong; tie vines loosely so they do not girdle
Thin aluminium or rusted railingMaybeCheck screws and welds first; wet foliage adds weight
Electric wire, cable or DP poleSkipNever let a vine climb anything carrying power
Wall without hooksSkipIt cannot cling to plaster; add wire or a trellis

How fast does the butterfly pea plant grow?

Slow for the first three weeks, then fast. Once nights are warm, a healthy vine adds several centimetres a day in June. Feed lightly: this is a legume and fixes some of its own nitrogen, so a handful of compost every month in the growing season is plenty. Heavy nitrogen feeding gives a green wall with few flowers.

Watering by season

  • 45°C summer (May, June): water deeply every morning in Multan, Bahawalpur and Lahore pots; in Karachi humidity, every one to two days.
  • Monsoon: only when the top 3 cm is dry. Waterlogged pots rot the roots.
  • Winter: once a week or less. Cold wet soil kills it faster than cold air.

Why is my butterfly pea not flowering?

Four causes cover most cases. Too little sun is the first: under four hours you get leaves only. Too much nitrogen is second, usually from urea or rich manure. Third is a pot too small and dried out daily. Fourth is age: a seedling sown in July may only begin flowering as the days cool. Pick flowers often, because pods left on the vine slow new buds.

The colour keeper

Pick flowers in the morning, once the dew has dried, and dry them flat on paper in shade, not sun. Sun-dried petals fade to grey-violet within days; shade-dried ones keep a deep blue for months in a closed glass jar.

How do you care for butterfly pea in winter?

In Karachi it keeps growing, though more slowly. In Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi and Islamabad, frost nights in December and January brown the leaves and may kill a young vine. Move pots against a south-facing wall, cover the top at night with an old sheet on frost warnings, and water little. A plant that has gone woody at the base often regrows from below in March even after its top dies. In the hills, treat it as a summer annual and save seed.

How and when should you prune it?

In late February or early March, cut back dead and thin stems to about 30 to 45 cm from the soil. New shoots come from the base and flower that summer. During the season, pinch tips that wander off the support and remove yellow leaves. Do not prune hard in October; the new soft growth will meet the first cold.

Is butterfly pea invasive?

Pods split open and throw seed a short distance, and in warm, wet places self-sown seedlings come up in the following monsoon. In a pot garden this is a minor chore: pull seedlings or pick pods before they dry. Do not plant it at the edge of open scrub or a canal bank where it can spread freely.

Common problems

SignLikely causeFirst response
Sticky leaf tips, antsAphidsHose off; mild soap water spray in the evening
Fine webbing, speckled leavesSpider mites in dry heatSpray leaf undersides with plain water daily
Yellow lower leaves, soggy soilOverwateringLet it dry, check the drainage hole
Holes, chewed budsCaterpillarsHand pick at dusk
Worth knowing first

Raw seeds and pods are not food; keep seed jars away from toddlers and pets and wash hands after handling. If you use any spray stronger than soap water, read the label, wear gloves and keep children off the balcony until it dries. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding or on regular medicine should ask their doctor before drinking blue tea often. If a child swallows seeds and vomits or seems unwell, call a doctor straight away.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it. It is cheap, quick, forgiving and genuinely pretty, and it flowers from the first summer. It suits a 15 litre pot on any sunny balcony in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad or Delhi. Skip it only if you have no sun or no safe support. More flowering choices for your home sit in our Phool aur Paudhe section.

Butterfly pea plant questions people ask

How long does butterfly pea take to flower from seed?

Usually seven to ten weeks in warm weather. Seed sown in March or April often flowers by June; late sowings may wait for cooler autumn days.

How many hours of sun does Aparajita need?

At least six. It tolerates afternoon shade in very hot cities, but in deep shade it grows leaves and almost no flowers.

Can I grow butterfly pea indoors?

Not well. A bright sunny window keeps it alive, but flowering is poor without direct sun. A balcony or roof is far better.

Why are my butterfly pea seeds not germinating?

The hard seed coat is the usual reason. Nick the coat and soak overnight, and sow only when nights are warm, roughly above 20°C.

Is butterfly pea a perennial or annual?

It is a perennial in frost-free places like Karachi. Where frost bites, it often behaves like an annual, though an old woody base can sprout again in spring.

Does Aparajita need fertiliser?

Very little. Compost once a month in the growing season is enough; it is a legume. Heavy nitrogen gives leaves instead of flowers.

Can butterfly pea grow in a hanging basket?

It can trail from a large basket, but baskets dry out fast in summer. A pot on the floor with string up to the ceiling is easier to keep alive.

How do I save butterfly pea seeds?

Let a few pods turn brown and dry on the vine, pick them before they split, shell the seed and store it in a dry, labelled jar out of children’s reach.
