How to Grow Geranium in Pots: October Cuttings to Winter Flowers
In the plains, geranium is a winter plant, not a summer one. Root cuttings in October, keep the pot in 4 to 6 hours of sun, let it dry between waterings, and it will flower from December to April. In June it simply needs shade and a rest. That timing is most of how to grow geranium here.
The short version
- Best season: October to April in the plains; March to October in the hills
- Pot: 6 to 8 inches (2 to 5 litres) for one plant; terracotta helps
- Sun: at least 4 hours direct in winter; morning sun only in summer
- Water: only when the top 3 cm is dry
- Cuttings: October, or February to March
- Prune: hard in late September to early October

Which geranium are we talking about?
The balcony “geranium” sold in Pakistani and Indian nurseries is Pelargonium: zonal types with round flower clusters in red, pink and white, ivy-leaf trailing types, and scented-leaf types like the rose or lemon geranium. True hardy Geranium (cranesbill) is a different, cold-climate plant. Everything below is about Pelargonium.
How do you grow geranium from cuttings?
Cuttings are the reliable route. Seed works but gives varied colours and takes months; cuttings give an exact copy and flower in 8 to 10 weeks. Clemson’s extension service notes most geraniums root easily from stem cuttings.
- In October, cut 8 to 10 cm tips from healthy, non-flowering stems, just below a leaf joint.
- Strip all but the top two or three leaves and remove any buds.
- Leave the cuttings in shade for a day so the cut end dries and seals. This is what stops them rotting.
- Push each one 3 cm deep into a small pot of half sand, half cocopeat or soil. Water once.
- Keep in bright shade, no plastic bag (geraniums dislike humid tents). Water only when the mix feels dry.
- New leaves in 3 to 4 weeks mean roots. Move into a 6 inch pot with regular mix.
The dry-end rule
Geranium stems are fleshy. A cutting pushed into wet soil straight away often blackens at the base within a week. Let the cut end dry for a day, then plant it into mix that is only slightly damp. Rooting hormone is not needed.
Layering
Trailing ivy geraniums root along their stems. Pin a long stem onto a small pot of mix beside the parent with a bent wire, wait 4 weeks, then cut it free.
What soil, sun and water does geranium need?
Mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand or brick grit. Drainage matters more than richness; see our potting mix guide.
Sun: NC State calls for 6 or more hours for best flowering, Clemson says at least 4 with some midday shade in hot places. In plains winters, give it all the sun you have. From April, move it to morning sun only.
| Season (plains) | Water | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Nov to Feb | Every 5 to 8 days, when top dries | Full sun; inside on frost nights |
| Mar to Apr | Every 2 to 4 days | Morning sun |
| May to Aug (45C) | Light, early morning, skip days if still damp | Bright shade, airy |
| Monsoon | Often none; protect from rain | Under a roof |
The seasonal watering guide explains the finger test. Wilting from drought causes yellow leaves, but so does constant wetness; aim for dry between, never bone-dry for days.
What is the best fertiliser for geranium?
Use a balanced feed (equal N, P and K) at half label strength every 2 to 3 weeks from November to March, or a potash-heavier one once buds form. Clemson notes geraniums turn stunted and yellow without enough nitrogen, so do not starve them. But heavy urea or fresh manure gives huge leaves and few flowers. Stop feeding in summer.
When should you prune geranium?
Prune hard in late September or early October: cut each stem back by a third to a half, just above a leaf joint. The plant then branches and fills with buds by December. Pinch growing tips once more in November for a bushier shape.
If you prune late, in January or February, you cut off the buds that were about to open and lose most of the winter flowering. Snap off faded flower clusters at the base of their stalk all season.
Why is my geranium not flowering, or yellowing?
- Not enough sun: leggy stems, few buds. Move to the sunniest spot.
- Too much nitrogen: lush leaves only. Switch to potash.
- Summer heat: it pauses above about 35C. Normal; wait for October.
- Yellow lower leaves: overwatering, or a long dry spell. Check the mix.
- Corky bumps under leaves (oedema): soil kept too wet in cool weather.
- Whitefly, mealybug, caterpillars: hand-pick, hose off, then mild soap solution. See pot pests if you are battling them.
- Grey mould on flowers in damp winter weeks: remove spent blooms promptly, keep foliage dry.
How do you keep geranium alive through summer and frost?
Summer kills more plains geraniums than winter. From May, move pots to bright shade with airflow, water lightly in the morning and keep them out of monsoon downpours. Pinch off flowers so it rests. Some will still die in a 47C week; keep two rooted cuttings as insurance.
Frost: Lahore, Delhi and Peshawar get a handful of near-zero nights. Pull pots under a roof or indoors next to a sunny window that night.
Geranium leaves are mildly toxic to cats and dogs, and cats are the most sensitive: eating them can cause vomiting and loss of appetite. Some people get a mild rash from handling scented leaves. Keep pots where cats cannot chew, and see a vet if a pet seems unwell after eating leaves. If you ever use a chemical spray, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children away until it dries.
Grow it or skip it?
| Situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| South or east facing balcony in the plains | Plant | One of the easiest winter flowers |
| West balcony that roasts in summer | Maybe | Needs moving to shade May to Sept |
| Hill station garden | Plant | Flowers spring to autumn; overwinter indoors |
| Home with a leaf-chewing cat | Maybe | Hang pots out of reach |

Geranium care, answered
How do I grow geranium from cuttings?
Take 8 to 10 cm tips in October, strip lower leaves, let the cut end dry for a day, then plant in a sandy mix and keep it barely moist in bright shade. Roots form in 3 to 4 weeks.
Why is my geranium not flowering?
Usually too little sun or too much nitrogen. Give it at least four to six hours of direct winter sun and switch to a potash-rich feed.
Why are my geranium leaves turning yellow?
Most often from soil kept wet, especially in cool weather. Long dry spells and nitrogen shortage can also yellow lower leaves, so check the mix first.
When is the best time to prune geranium?
Late September to early October in the plains. Pruning in midwinter removes the buds and costs you the flowers.
Can geranium survive Pakistani summers?
Often yes, if you move it into bright shade, water lightly in the morning and keep it out of monsoon rain. Expect it to rest and look tired until October.
How do I take care of geranium in winter?
Full sun, water only when dry, feed every few weeks, and bring it under cover on frost nights. Winter is its main flowering season in the plains.
Can geranium grow from seed?
Yes, but seedlings vary and take several months to flower. Cuttings are faster and keep the parent’s colour.
Is geranium safe for cats?
No. It is mildly toxic to cats and dogs, and cats react most. Keep it out of reach.
What size pot does a geranium need?
A 6 to 8 inch pot suits one plant. Geraniums flower better slightly snug than in an oversized pot of wet soil.
How often should I water a potted geranium?
When the top 3 cm feels dry: about weekly in winter, every few days in spring. Never on a schedule alone.
