How to Grow Dahlia in Pots: Winter Planting, Depth and Disbudding
In the plains, dahlia is a winter flower, not a summer one. How to grow dahlia here: plant tubers or nursery plants in October and November, about 8 cm deep with the old stem stub pointing up, in a big pot in full sun; stake on day one; and for dinner plate blooms, pinch off the side buds so each stem carries one flower. Expect flowers from about January to March, then decide whether to store the tubers through a 45C summer or start again next autumn.
In brief
- Plant: October to November in the plains; March to April in the hills
- Depth: cover the tuber with about 8 cm (3 inches) of soil
- Which way up: old stem stub and its “eyes” upward, tuber lying flat
- Pot: 30 to 35 cm wide (12 to 14 inches), 20 to 25 litres, one plant
- Sun: full sun, 6 hours or more
- Stake: at planting, not later
- Bloom: roughly January to March

Tubers, seed or nursery plants?
Each has a place. Nursery dahlias in November are the easiest start, already rooted. Tubers give you the named variety you chose and survive a season if stored well. Seed is cheap, but NC State Extension notes seed grown dahlias are usually dwarf types, often less heat tolerant and poorer bloomers. Good for bedding, not for the giant blooms in shows.
When to plant dahlia bulbs in Pakistan
| Zone | Plant | Bloom |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi | Late October to November | January to February |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | October | December to February |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | October to November | January to March |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | October, or March after frost | Late winter, or early summer |
| Hills | March to May | Summer to autumn |
Frost blackens dahlia leaves. In Lahore and Islamabad, move pots under cover on frost nights.
How deep to plant dahlia bulbs
- Check the tuber: firm, not shrivelled, with part of the old stem attached. Eyes (growth buds) sit only on that crown, not on the tuber body, so a tuber broken off without crown will never sprout.
- Fill the pot two thirds with 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand (see potting mix ratios).
- Put the stake in first, a strong bamboo about 1 m tall, near the centre.
- Lay the tuber flat beside the stake, crown and stem stub up.
- Cover with about 8 cm of mix. NC State gives 3 inches.
- Water once, then hold off until shoots appear. Wet soil with no leaves to drink is how tubers rot.
One bud per stem for the big bloom
Dahlia buds come in threes at each stem tip: a fat central one and two small side ones. Pinch off the two side buds as soon as you can grip them. The plant then pours everything into the centre flower, which opens noticeably larger on a longer, cleaner stem. Want more flowers rather than bigger ones? Skip this and let all three open.
Care while it grows
Pinching
When the shoot has three or four pairs of leaves, pinch out the tip. The plant branches into four to six stems instead of one tall pole.
Water
After shoots appear, water when the top 3 cm are dry. That is every three to five days in winter, more as March warms. Our guide on watering pots by season covers the finger test.
Feeding
Compost in the mix, then a flowering feed with more potash than nitrogen every three weeks once buds form. Heavy nitrogen gives a leafy giant with soft stems.
Deadheading
Cut spent flowers back to the next leaf pair. NC State notes deadheading extends blooming. A spent dahlia head is pointed and cone shaped; a new bud is round. Do not cut the buds by mistake.
Dahlia care after flowering
By late March in Multan and April in Lahore, heat ends flowering. Here you choose.
- Keep the plant: cut back to 15 cm, move the pot to shade, and water very little through summer. In the plains, monsoon wet often rots it; success is patchy.
- Store the tubers: stop watering when leaves yellow, lift the clump, cut stems to 5 cm, and let it dry upside down in shade for a few days.
How to store dahlia bulbs
NC State’s advice is to dry tubers carefully without washing and store them in dry sand or vermiculite at a cool 2 to 7C. Few Pakistani homes have that, so the practical choice is a box of dry sand or sawdust in the coolest, darkest room, checked monthly, removing any soft or mouldy tubers. Expect some to shrivel in a 45C summer. Tubers that survive are planted again in October.
Multiplying dahlias
NC State lists division and root cuttings. Divide the stored clump in October, just before planting, when eyes begin to swell and you can see them: cut with a clean knife so each piece has one tuber plus a bit of crown with at least one eye. Each piece becomes a plant. Stem cuttings also root: take a young shoot 8 to 10 cm long from a sprouting tuber, cut just below a leaf joint, and set it in damp sand in bright shade.
Why is my dahlia not flowering?
| Sign | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Huge leafy plant, no buds | Too much nitrogen, shade | Potash feed, full sun |
| Tuber never sprouted | No eye on the crown, or rot | Buy tubers with crown attached; water less at first |
| White powder on leaves | Powdery mildew | Remove worst leaves, space pots, water the soil |
| Chewed petals at night | Earwigs or caterpillars | Hand pick at dusk |
| Speckled, dull leaves | Spider mites in warm dry spells | Spray water under leaves |
Dahlias are not among the classic poisonous garden plants, but tubers in storage can look like ginger or sweet potato, so label the box and keep it away from food and children. Some people get itchy skin from the sap; wear gloves when dividing. For pests start with water and hand picking; with any chemical spray read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until dry.
Dahlia questions
When should I plant dahlias in Pakistan?
October to November in the plains for winter flowers. In the hills, March to April after frost.
How deep do you plant dahlia tubers?
Cover with about 8 cm of soil, tuber lying flat with the crown up.
Can dahlias grow in pots?
Yes. Use a 30 to 35 cm pot per plant, a stake, and full sun. Dwarf types manage in 25 cm pots.
How long does a dahlia take to flower?
About eight to twelve weeks from planting a tuber, depending on variety and cold.
Should I water dahlia tubers after planting?
Once, then wait for shoots. Keeping the pot wet before leaves appear is the commonest cause of rot.
Can I grow dahlia from seed?
Yes. Seed plants are usually dwarf and variable, good for bedding but rarely as big as tuber grown ones.
Do dahlias come back every year?
The tuber can, if it survives storage or summer. In the plains, many gardeners replant each October.
Why are my dahlia flowers small?
Too many buds per stem, little sun or too little potash. Remove side buds for bigger blooms.
