How to Grow Ranunculus: Soaking, Planting Depth and Corm Storage

Most ranunculus failures happen before a single leaf appears: the claw-shaped corm rots in wet soil. To grow ranunculus well in the plains, soak the corms for only 3 to 4 hours, plant them claws down about 5 cm deep in November, and water sparingly until shoots show.

Before you start

  • Planting: November to mid December (plains); February to March (hills)
  • Soak: 3 to 4 hours in room-temperature water, no longer
  • Depth and spacing: about 5 cm deep, claws pointing down, 15 cm apart
  • Pot: 8 inch (about 5 litres) for 3 corms; 12 inch for 5 to 6
  • Sun: 6 hours or more in winter
  • Flowers: about 90 days after planting, February to March

What exactly are you planting?

A ranunculus corm (really a tuberous root) looks like a small dried brown spider or a bunch of claws. It arrives dry and hard as a pebble. The flowers that come out of it in spring look like small layered roses in white, pink, orange, red and yellow, which is why it sells well at nurseries in Lahore and Islamabad in November.

Ranunculus loves cool, bright weather and hates heat. It goes dormant when temperatures climb, so in the plains you get one generous spring burst, and that is the whole show.

When should you plant ranunculus in your city?

How do you soak and plant ranunculus corms?

  1. Put the corms in a bowl of plain water at room temperature for 3 to 4 hours. They swell to nearly double. Longer soaking invites rot, so set a timer.
  2. Fill the pot with a fast-draining mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand. Our potting mix ratios explain the swaps.
  3. Place each corm claws pointing down, like an upside-down spider, about 15 cm apart.
  4. Cover with roughly 5 cm of mix. NC State Extension gives 2 inches deep with claws down, which matches.
  5. Water once, lightly, and do not water again until the top 3 cm is dry. Shoots appear in 2 to 3 weeks.

Pre-sprout them in a tray

After soaking, lay the corms on 3 cm of barely damp cocopeat in a shallow tray, cover lightly and keep them somewhere cool and shaded. In 10 to 14 days you will see white roots. Plant only the ones that sprouted; the rest were dud corms and would have rotted in your pot anyway.

How should you water and feed ranunculus?

Water is the single biggest lever. Before shoots appear, almost none. Once leaves grow, water when the top few centimetres dry, which in December is often every 5 to 7 days in a pot. Never leave a saucer full of water. The winter watering guide has the details.

Frost nights in Lahore, Delhi and Faisalabad can blacken leaf tips. Move pots under a roof overhang or throw an old dupatta over them on nights forecast near zero.

Feed with a liquid balanced fertiliser at half label strength every two weeks once there are 6 to 8 leaves, then switch to a potash-rich feed when buds appear. A spoon of compost on top of the mix in January also helps.

Why is my ranunculus not flowering?

  • Planted late. Corms planted in January in the plains often run out of cool weather before buds open.
  • Not enough sun. Fewer than 5 hours gives leaves only.
  • Rot underneath. Yellowing, collapsing leaves with a mushy corm. Usually overwatering or a long soak.
  • Aphids on buds. Spray off with water; use mild soap solution in the evening if they return.
  • Powdery mildew in still, damp air. Improve spacing and airflow, remove affected leaves.

What happens after flowering, and can you store the corms?

Cut each flower stem low as it fades and more buds follow from the base. Cut flowers for a vase when the buds are coloured and soft like a marshmallow; they open indoors and last a week or more.

When the heat arrives in March or April, leaves yellow and the plant goes dormant. Stop watering. Once the foliage is brown, lift the corms, cut off the tops, let them dry in shade for a week, then store them in a paper bag in a cool, dry, dark place. NC State Extension suggests this same lift and store routine.

Honest note: in the plains, stored corms often shrivel or rot over a 45C summer. Many gardeners buy fresh corms every November. If you store, check them in September and throw out soft ones.

Can you multiply ranunculus?

Healthy corms sometimes form small side pieces with their own claws. You can break these off at lifting and plant them in autumn, but they need a full season to reach flowering size. Seed is possible but slow and mostly for enthusiasts.

Worth knowing first

Ranunculus sap can irritate skin, and the plant is mildly toxic if eaten, causing mouth burning, vomiting or diarrhoea in people and pets. Wear gloves when handling and splitting corms, and keep pots away from toddlers, cats and dogs who chew leaves. Seek medical or vet advice if a child or pet has eaten any part and is unwell.

Ranunculus questions answered

How long should I soak ranunculus corms?

Three to four hours in room-temperature water is enough. Overnight soaking is a common reason the corms rot in the pot.

Which way do ranunculus corms go in the soil?

Claws pointing down. Think of an upside-down spider with its legs in the soil.

How deep do you plant ranunculus bulbs?

About 5 cm of mix above the corm, roughly 15 cm apart. Deeper planting slows sprouting and adds rot risk.

When should I plant ranunculus in Pakistan?

November to mid December in the Punjab and Sindh plains, late October in Islamabad, and February to March in the hills.

Can ranunculus grow in pots?

Yes. An 8 inch pot holds three corms comfortably, provided it drains fast and gets at least six hours of winter sun.

How long does ranunculus take to flower?

Roughly three months from planting. November planting in the plains usually flowers in February and March.

Why are my ranunculus corms rotting?

Too long a soak, a heavy soil mix, or watering before shoots show. Pre-sprouting in damp cocopeat lets you catch dud corms before planting.

Do ranunculus come back every year?

In cool climates they can. In the plains summer heat usually kills stored or left corms, so treat them as one season flowers.

How do you store ranunculus bulbs over summer?

Lift them after the leaves brown, cut off the tops, dry them in shade for a week, and keep them in a paper bag somewhere cool and dry. Check for soft ones before replanting.

Can ranunculus survive frost?

Light frost marks the leaves; hard freezes damage the plant. Cover pots on nights near zero in Lahore, Delhi or Peshawar.
