How to Save Flower Seeds: Marigold, Zinnia, Petunia, Sunflower
To save flower seeds, leave the flower head on the plant until it turns brown and papery, pick it on a dry afternoon, dry it indoors for a week, then rub out the seeds and store them cool, dark and bone dry. Marigold, zinnia and sunflower make it easy. Petunia is fiddly, and seed from any F1 hybrid won’t come back looking like its parent.
Quick facts
- Easiest: marigold (genda), zinnia, cosmos, sunflower, balsam (gul mehndi).
- Tricky: petunia (dust-fine seed, mostly hybrids), dahlia (grow from tubers instead).
- Ready when: petals dry, head brown, seeds slide out easily.
- Dry for: 7 to 14 days on newspaper in shade.
- Store: labelled paper packets inside an airtight jar, in the fridge or the coolest cupboard.

When are flower seed heads ready to collect?
Later than you think. Most beginners pick heads while the petals still have colour, and those seeds are pale, soft and won’t sprout. Wait until the head looks dead.
| Flower | Ready sign | What the seed looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Marigold (genda) | Head brown and dry, base papery | Thin black sticks with a pale tip |
| Zinnia | Centre brown, petals crisp | Flat arrowhead shapes at the base of each petal |
| Sunflower | Back of head yellow to brown, seeds plump | Striped seeds; cover heads with a net bag from birds |
| Petunia | Small pod at base of the dead flower turns tan | Dust-fine brown specks |
| Cosmos | Seeds turn dark and spread like a star | Long thin needles |
How do you collect and dry marigold and zinnia seeds?
- Choose your best plants early, the strongest ones with the colour you want. Tie a bit of wool on them so you don’t deadhead them by mistake.
- Let heads dry on the plant. On the plains this is easy from October to April; in the monsoon, heads may rot, so pick them a little earlier and finish drying indoors.
- Pick on a dry afternoon, never after rain or morning dew.
- Spread heads on newspaper in a shaded, airy room for 7 to 14 days. Not in direct sun on the roof in June; heat above about 40C can damage seed.
- Pull heads apart over a plate. Marigold and zinnia seeds come out by hand. Blow gently to remove chaff.
- Test dryness: a dry seed snaps or feels hard; a bendy seed needs more days.
- Pack into paper envelopes, label with name, colour and year.
The petunia trick
Petunia seed is so fine it blows away. Slip a small paper bag or old tea bag over the swelling pod and tie it loosely once the flower fades. When the pod splits, the seed lands in the bag, not on the soil.
How should you store flower seeds?
Cool, dark and dry are the three rules. Purdue extension advises an airtight jar in the fridge (not the freezer), with a layer of uncooked rice or powdered milk wrapped in a paper towel at the bottom to soak up damp. Paper packets go inside the jar. That’s the best of both: paper for labelling and breathing while the last moisture leaves, glass for keeping Karachi humidity and monsoon damp out.
- Avoid: plastic zip bags sealed straight after collection. Seed that isn’t fully dry sweats and moulds.
- Avoid: kitchen shelves near the stove, and the top shelf of a hot room in May.
- Shelf life: marigold and zinnia seed is usually good for about two to three years if kept well; it declines after that rather than stopping suddenly.
Do hybrid flower seeds grow true?
No, not reliably. An F1 hybrid is a cross of two parent lines. Its seed mixes the parents’ traits again, so the next plants vary: the giant orange “African” marigold may come back smaller, paler or a different shape. Many bedding petunias and fancy zinnias sold at nurseries are F1.
Open-pollinated (desi) flowers mostly come back like the parent. Even then, bees cross colours if several varieties grow side by side. If you want one colour to stay true, keep that variety a few metres away from others, or save seed only from a block of one colour.
| Seed source | Save it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Desi genda from your own garden | Save | Usually comes true, adapted to your climate |
| F1 packet flowers | Maybe | Fun surprises, but not the same flower |
| Garland marigolds from the market | Maybe | Often grow, but may have dried poorly or be hybrid |
| Diseased or mouldy heads | Skip | Disease can travel on seed |
How do you test if saved seeds will germinate?
- Count 10 seeds.
- Lay them on a damp folded tissue on a plate and cover with another plate or a polythene bag.
- Keep in a warm place, about room temperature, and check daily.
- Count sprouts after 7 to 10 days (marigold and zinnia usually show in 4 to 7).
- Seven sprouts means about 70 percent; sow a little thicker than usual if the number is low.
When to sow saved flower seed in each zone
- Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi): marigold in late August to October for winter flowers, and February to March for summer. Zinnia and sunflower February to April.
- Hot dry (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur): marigold September to October; zinnia February and again in July for monsoon colour.
- Coastal Karachi: marigold almost all year except peak monsoon; petunia October to November.
- Islamabad and Peshawar: petunia and marigold in September to October and February to March; avoid frost weeks for tender seedlings.
- Hills: sow most annuals March to May after frost.
Some seeds people collect around flowerbeds are poisonous, such as castor (arand), oleander (kaner) pods and datura. Keep seed jars away from children and label them clearly so nobody mistakes them for food. Treated shop seed is often dyed pink, blue or green with fungicide; wash hands after handling and never feed it to birds or chickens. See our poisonous plants guide. If a child swallows seeds and then vomits, has a tummy ache or seems drowsy, call a doctor promptly.
Seed saving questions people ask
How do you collect marigold seeds?
Wait until the head is brown and dry on the plant, pick it on a dry day, dry it indoors for a week, then pull out the thin black seeds by hand.
Can you save seeds from store bought marigold garlands?
Often yes, if the flowers were mature. Germination is less reliable because they were picked fresh and may be hybrids, so sow extra.
How do you store flower seeds for next year?
Dry them fully, put labelled paper packets into an airtight jar, and keep it in the fridge or a cool dark cupboard.
Do zinnia seeds come true from saved seed?
Open-pollinated zinnias mostly do if not crossed with other colours. F1 hybrids will vary.
Can you save petunia seeds?
Yes, but the seed is dust-fine and most nursery petunias are hybrids, so expect mixed results. Bag the pods before they split.
How long do flower seeds last?
Marigold and zinnia are usually fine for two to three years when stored cool and dry. Run a germination test on older seed.
Why did my saved seeds go mouldy?
They were not dry enough before storing, or the container let damp in. Dry longer and store with rice in a sealed jar.
Should I deadhead flowers if I want seeds?
Deadhead most of the plant to keep it blooming, but leave a few chosen heads to mature fully for seed.
Can I save sunflower seeds for eating and planting?
Yes, but for planting, dry them raw and don’t roast or salt them. Birds love them, so net the heads while they ripen.
