How to Grow Portulaca (9 O’Clock Flower) from Cuttings and Seed
If you want colour on a roof that bakes at 45C, grow portulaca, the 9 o’clock flower. The easiest way to grow portulaca is not seed at all: snap a finger-length cutting, push it into gritty soil in a sunny pot, and it usually roots within days. Seed works too, but it is slower and fussier, so beginners should start with cuttings or a nursery tray.
Quick facts
- Names: Portulaca, 9 O’Clock, Moss Rose, Nau Baje Wala Phool.
- Best method: stem cuttings, 5 to 8 cm long. Seed for big mixed-colour beds.
- Pot: wide and shallow, 8 to 10 inches across (3 to 5 litres) is plenty; hanging baskets and cracked old trays work.
- Mix: half garden soil, a quarter coarse sand, a quarter compost.
- Sun: six hours or more of direct sun. In shade it stays green and sulks.
- Flowers: about a month after cuttings root, from spring until the monsoon rots it or winter slows it.

Why is it called the 9 o’clock flower?
Because the flowers open only in strong sunlight, which on a summer morning in the plains arrives at around nine. They close again by evening and stay shut on cloudy days. University of Wisconsin extension describes exactly this behaviour and notes that some newer hybrid series stay open longer, even under cloud. If yours never seem to open, the pot is not getting enough direct sun.
When to sow portulaca seeds in Pakistan and North India
| Zone | Seed or cuttings | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | February to April, again September to October | Mild winters let it flower almost all year in sun |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | February to March | Thrives in summer heat; just water when dry |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Late February to April | Cuttings from a neighbour work from March to August |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | March to April | Frost kills it; take cuttings indoors by November |
| Hills | May to June | A summer pot plant only |
Seed needs warm soil. Wisconsin extension says sow only after frost has passed and the soil has warmed, and expect sprouting in about one and a half to two weeks.
How to grow portulaca from cuttings
- Snap or cut stems 5 to 8 cm long from a healthy plant. Any time from March to August works.
- Pull the leaves off the bottom 2 cm.
- Push three to five cuttings into the same pot, about 3 cm deep, in slightly moist gritty mix. No rooting powder needed.
- Keep the pot in bright shade for two or three days, then move it into full sun.
- Water only when the top of the mix is dry. Fresh cuttings rot faster than they dry out.
- New leaves at the tips mean roots have formed, usually within a week in summer.
Success rate is very high: this is one of the very few plants where even a stem dropped on damp soil may root by itself.
How to grow portulaca from seed
- Fill a shallow tray with fine, moist mix.
- Mix the dust-fine seed with a spoon of dry sand so it spreads evenly.
- Scatter on top and barely cover; a sprinkle of sand is enough.
- Mist, don’t pour. Keep in bright light, out of the harshest noon sun.
- Thin or transplant clumps when seedlings are about 3 cm tall, keeping them roughly 8 cm apart.

Honest beginner’s pick
Buy one nursery pot in a colour you love, or ask a neighbour for a handful of stems. In a month you can have five pots. Seed is cheap, but the seedlings are tiny, wash away in one heavy watering and give mixed colours you did not choose. Cuttings copy the parent exactly, including double flowers.
Portulaca care in pots through the year
Water
It is a semi-succulent that stores water in its fleshy leaves. In peak summer, water a shallow pot every day or two when dry. In spring and autumn, every three to five days. In winter, once a week or less. In Karachi’s humid months and the monsoon, cut back hard and raise pots off wet floors; soggy roots are its main killer. Our potted plant watering guide has the finger test.
Feeding
Lean soil makes more flowers. A handful of compost at planting and a light liquid feed once a month in summer is enough. Heavy nitrogen gives green mats with few blooms.
Pinching and deadheading
Pinch the tips once when plants are 10 cm long to make them bushy. Picking off faded flowers keeps new buds coming and, as Wisconsin extension notes, cuts down on self-seeding.
Why is my portulaca not flowering?
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Less than six hours of sun | Move to the sunniest spot you have |
| Rich, wet soil | Repot into gritty mix; water less |
| Cloudy or cool weeks | Wait; flowers open with sun |
| Old, leggy plants | Restart from fresh tip cuttings |
Is portulaca annual or perennial?
Treat it as an annual you keep alive with cuttings. In frost-free Karachi a pot can carry on for more than a year, but it gets woody and thin. In Lahore, Delhi and Islamabad, frost nights in December and January blacken it. Keep a few rooted cuttings on a sunny indoor sill and restart pots each spring.
How to save portulaca seeds
After a flower fades, a tiny cup forms. When it turns papery, the lid pops off and spills black seed like poppy seed. Hold a paper bag under the stem and tap, or pick cups just before they open and dry them on paper indoors. Store in a dry envelope. Seed from hybrids may not repeat the parent’s colour.
Garden portulaca (moss rose) is an ornamental. It is a relative of kulfa (common purslane), which is eaten as a sabzi, but do not cook your flower pots; ornamentals are often sprayed at nurseries. Mealybugs and aphids sometimes hide in the stems; wipe or wash them off first, and use a soap spray before anything stronger. Read any label, wear gloves, and keep children and pets away until it dries.

Portulaca questions, answered
How do you grow portulaca from seed?
Scatter the tiny seed on moist, gritty mix in spring, barely cover with sand and keep it moist and bright. Seedlings appear in one to two weeks and can be moved when about 3 cm tall.
Can portulaca grow from cuttings?
Yes, and very easily. Stems 5 to 8 cm long pushed into gritty soil usually root within a week in warm weather.
When should I plant portulaca in Pakistan?
February to April in most of the plains, a little later in Islamabad and Peshawar, and again in autumn in Karachi.
How long does portulaca take to flower?
Rooted cuttings often bloom within three to five weeks. Seed-grown plants take longer, often six to eight weeks.
Why do my 9 o’clock flowers close in the afternoon?
That is normal. The flowers open in strong sun and close in late afternoon, at night and on dull days.
How often should I water portulaca in summer?
Only when the top of the soil is dry, which may be daily in a shallow pot at 45C. Never leave it standing in a water-filled saucer.
Does portulaca survive winter?
Not in frost. Keep cuttings in a sunny, sheltered spot or indoors in Punjab and Islamabad, and restart in spring.
Is portulaca safe for pets?
It is not on the usual danger list, but nibbling garden plants can still upset an animal’s stomach. Discourage chewing, and call a vet if you see vomiting.
Is portulaca the same as kulfa?
They are close cousins in the same genus. Kulfa is the edible leafy one; the 9 o’clock flower is grown for its blooms.
