How to Grow Calathea and Maranta Without Crispy Brown Edges
Calathea and its cousin maranta, the prayer plants that fold their leaves up at night, are beautiful and honestly a little demanding. Crispy brown edges are the classic complaint, and they come from two things: dry air and hard tap water. Give them bright shade, soft water and a humid corner, and they reward you with leaves that look painted.
Quick facts
- Light: north window, or 1 to 2 metres back from an east window. Never direct sun.
- Pot: 6 to 8 inch (1.5 to 4 litre), shallow and wide is better than deep.
- Water: evenly moist, never soggy; rain, AC or distilled water if your tap is hard.
- Humidity: high; group plants on a wet pebble tray.
- Propagate: division in spring (March to April); maranta also from stem cuttings.
- Pets: the ASPCA lists calathea as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Calathea or maranta: what is the difference?
Both belong to the same plant family and both “pray”, lifting their leaves at dusk and lowering them by morning. Calathea grows as an upright clump of long stalked leaves, often striped or patterned in pink, cream or deep green. Maranta is lower and spreading, with oval leaves marked in red veins or dark blotches, and it trails over the pot edge. Maranta is generally the easier of the two and is the better first prayer plant for a dry city.
Which window works in a Pakistani flat?
NC State extension describes calathea as wanting bright, indirect light or partial shade: direct sun scorches leaves, and too little light fades the pattern.
- North: the safest choice, right at the sill.
- East: a metre or two back, or behind a sheer curtain.
- South: only in winter, set back from the glass.
- West: not suitable in summer; leaves curl and bleach.
A bathroom with a frosted window is often the happiest place in a flat, because of steam from showers.
Climate by region
Karachi and coastal areas: the humidity suits it; this is where calatheas thrive with least effort.
Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: the hardest. Dry 45°C air and AC rooms crisp leaf edges fast. Grow maranta rather than fancy calathea, and keep it on a pebble tray with other plants.
Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: the monsoon is easy; May, June and winter heater days are the risky times.
Islamabad, Peshawar, hills: keep away from cold windows at night in winter; NC State suggests about 18 to 24°C as a comfortable range.
How often should you water calathea?
Keep the mix lightly moist, like a wrung out sponge. Water when the top 2 cm feels dry.
| Season | Typical interval | Note |
|---|---|---|
| May to June | Every 2 to 3 days | Check daily in AC rooms |
| Monsoon | Every 4 to 6 days | Do not let it sit wet |
| October to November | Every 5 to 7 days | Growth slows |
| December to February | Every 7 to 10 days | Use room temperature water |
NC State recommends rain or distilled water, because fluoride in tap water browns the leaves. Our watering guide for potted plants covers the finger test and pot weight method.
The humidity corner
Fill a wide tray with pebbles and water to just below the top of the pebbles. Set the calathea on it and crowd two or three other leafy plants around it. Together they hold moist air around their leaves far better than a single pot alone. Keep the cluster away from the AC outlet and the ceiling fan’s direct draught. This one change fixes more crispy calatheas than any spray bottle.
Best soil for calathea and maranta
Light, moisture holding but free draining. Mix 2 parts cocopeat, 1 part compost or leaf mould, 1 part perlite and a small handful of fine bark. Avoid heavy garden soil. See our potting mix ratio guide. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at a quarter to half strength once a month from March to September; too much feed burns the edges just like salty water does.
How to propagate calathea and maranta
Division (calathea and maranta)
- In March or April, water the plant the day before.
- Slide it out of the pot and gently tease the clump apart with your fingers.
- Make sure each piece has several leaves and its own roots and rhizome.
- Pot each division into a 4 to 6 inch pot of fresh mix.
- Keep in shade, lightly moist, with a clear bag loosely over the top for 2 weeks.
- Some leaves may curl or yellow at first. New leaves show it has settled.
Stem cutting (maranta only)
- Cut a trailing stem just below a node, keeping 2 or 3 leaves.
- Stand it in water, changing the water weekly.
- Pot it when roots are 3 to 5 cm long.
Calathea does not root from leaf or stem cuttings, so division is the only practical route at home.
Why are calathea leaves turning yellow or brown?
| Sign | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Crispy brown edges | Dry air, fluoride, salts | Pebble tray, soft water |
| Leaves curling inward by day | Thirst or dry air | Water, raise humidity |
| Yellow lower leaves, wet soil | Overwatering, root rot | Let dry, check roots |
| Faded pattern | Too little light | Move nearer a north window |
| Fine speckles, webbing | Spider mites | Wash leaves, neem spray |
Spider mites love dry air on calatheas. Rinse leaf undersides weekly in summer. Our pot pest guide has organic first steps.
Grow it or skip it?
| Home | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, or a humid bathroom | Plant | Humidity is half the work |
| Lahore or Delhi flat, beginner | Maybe | Start with maranta |
| Multan AC room, no soft water | Skip | Edges will keep crisping |
| Home with cats | Plant | Non-toxic to pets |

Calathea is listed as non-toxic to pets, but any plant eaten in quantity can upset a pet’s stomach, and neem or chemical sprays used on it are not safe to lick. Spray outdoors or in a ventilated spot, follow the label, wear gloves, and keep children and pets away until leaves dry. Call a vet if a pet vomits repeatedly after chewing a treated plant.
Prayer plant questions people ask
Why are my calathea leaves crispy at the edges?
Dry air and hard or fluoridated tap water are the usual causes. Use soft water and a pebble tray, and trim brown edges following the leaf shape.
Is calathea safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists calathea as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Maranta is generally considered pet safe as well.
How much light does a calathea need?
Bright shade. A north window or a spot well back from an east window works; direct sun burns the leaves.
Why does my prayer plant close its leaves at night?
It is normal. The leaves rise and fold at dusk and open by morning, a daily movement controlled by a joint at the leaf base.
Can calathea grow from a leaf cutting?
No. Calathea is propagated by dividing the clump. Maranta can be grown from stem cuttings in water.
Should I mist my calathea?
Misting raises humidity only briefly. A pebble tray and grouping plants work better and do not leave water spots.
How often should I water calathea in winter?
About every 7 to 10 days on the plains, when the top 2 cm is dry. Use room temperature water.
Why are my calathea leaves curling?
Curling by day usually means thirst or dry air. Water if the soil is dry, then raise humidity around it.
