How to Grow Boston Fern: Keep It Green in Heat and AC Air

A Boston fern in a hanging basket on a shaded verandah is one of the prettiest sights in a South Asian home, and one of the quickest to go brown and crunchy. The fern needs soil that never dries out and humid air around it. Get those two right and it grows lush enough to divide every February.

In brief

  • Light: bright shade; north verandah or a metre back from an east window.
  • Pot or basket: 8 to 10 inch (3 to 6 litre) hanging basket or pot.
  • Water: keep soil consistently moist; less in winter.
  • Humidity: high; a wet pebble tray or a humid spot, not just misting.
  • Propagate: division in February to March; runner plantlets in the monsoon.
  • Pets: the ASPCA lists Boston fern as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Where should a Boston fern hang?

NC State extension says it wants bright indirect light indoors, and outdoors can take dappled light or deep shade. Direct sun yellows and burns fronds.

  • North facing verandah or window: ideal all year.
  • East: fine if the morning sun is filtered by a grille, curtain or tree.
  • South: winter only, under a roof overhang.
  • West: avoid; afternoon heat dries a fern in hours.

By region

Karachi: ferns grow happily on shaded balconies year round thanks to sea air humidity. Salty wind on exposed balconies can brown tips.

Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: from May to early July, with dry heat near 45°C, bring the fern indoors to a shaded room and stand it on a pebble tray, or it will crisp no matter how much you water.

Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: the monsoon is fern season. In December and January, move it in or against a sheltered wall before frost nights; NC State gives about 16 to 21°C as its comfort zone.

Islamabad, Peshawar, hills: summer on a shaded porch is lovely; winter indoors.

How often should you water a Boston fern?

NC State is blunt: the soil should never dry out, but in winter, when growth slows, water less to avoid root rot.

SeasonTypical wateringTip
May to JuneDaily, sometimes twice in a dry heatwaveDunk the basket
MonsoonEvery 2 to 3 daysCheck drainage
October to NovemberEvery 3 to 4 daysTrim old fronds
December to FebruaryEvery 5 to 7 daysKeep barely moist

For hanging baskets, the easiest method is to lower the basket into a bucket of water for 10 minutes, then hang it back to drip. See how often to water potted plants for more on seasons.

Misting myth: does spraying raise humidity?

Myth: misting a fern every day keeps it humid. A mist evaporates within minutes, so the air around the fronds is dry again long before your next spray. What actually holds humidity is a reservoir: a pebble tray under the pot, ferns grouped with other plants, or a naturally humid spot like a kitchen window or bathroom. NC State also notes that dry air invites scale and spider mites.

The double pot trick

Put the fern’s plastic pot inside a bigger clay pot and fill the gap with damp cocopeat or sand. Wet the gap each time you water. The outer layer gives off moisture slowly around the fronds all day, and the inner roots stay cooler in a Lahore May. It does more than a week of misting.

Best soil for Boston fern

Loose, rich and draining. Mix 2 parts cocopeat, 2 parts leaf mould or compost and 1 part perlite or coarse sand. Heavy clay soil either stays waterlogged or dries hard as brick. More ratios in our potting mix guide. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month from March to September.

How to propagate a Boston fern

Division (the reliable method)

  1. In February or early March, before new growth surges, water the fern well the day before.
  2. Unpot it and cut the root ball into 2 to 4 pieces with a sharp knife or spade.
  3. Each piece should have plenty of fronds and a firm crown.
  4. Trim back damaged fronds by half so the roots can keep up.
  5. Pot each into a 6 inch pot of fresh mix and keep it in shade, moist, for 3 to 4 weeks.

Runner plantlets

  1. Find a thin, fuzzy runner (stolon) hanging from the basket with a tiny fern at the tip.
  2. Pin the plantlet onto a small pot of moist mix without cutting it free.
  3. After 3 to 4 weeks, when it resists a gentle tug, cut the runner.

The brown dots under mature fronds are spores, not pests. Growing ferns from spores is possible but slow and fiddly, so most home growers stick to division.

In the ground, Boston fern can spread in warm humid gardens; keep it in pots or baskets. More plants in Phool aur Paudhe.

Before you hang it

A wet hanging basket is heavy: use a ceiling hook rated for the load, not a thin nail, especially over a seating area or a child’s play spot. Ferns are non-toxic to pets, but neem and other sprays are not; read the label, wear gloves, spray outdoors and keep pets away until dry. Empty saucers and trays under ferns every few days in the monsoon so mosquitoes cannot breed in them.

Boston fern questions answered

Why is my Boston fern turning brown?

Usually dry soil or dry air. Soak the pot fully, move it out of direct sun and stand it on a wet pebble tray.

Is Boston fern safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA lists Boston fern as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Can Boston fern take direct sun?

No. Direct sun yellows and scorches fronds. Bright shade or filtered morning light is best.

How do I propagate a Boston fern?

Divide the clump in February or early March, or root the small plantlets that form at the tips of runners.

Should I cut back a dying Boston fern?

Yes. Cut brown fronds at the base. If the crown is still green and firm, new fronds usually follow within weeks.

How do I keep a Boston fern alive in winter?

Bring it indoors to a bright room before frost nights, water less often, stop feeding and keep it away from heaters.

What are the brown dots under my fern leaves?

Spores. They sit in neat rows on mature fronds and are a normal part of the fern’s life, not insects or disease.

Can Boston fern grow indoors with AC?

It can, if it is out of the direct air flow and sits on a pebble tray. AC air is dry and browns fronds quickly.
