Indoor Plants for Low Light Flats: What Lives and What to Skip

The indoor plants for low light that genuinely last in a Pakistani or North Indian flat are snake plant, ZZ plant, money plant (pothos), peace lily, aglaonema and cast iron plant. Ferns, crotons, succulents and anything that flowers usually die slowly in a dim room. “Low light” still means daylight you can read by at noon; a corridor with no window is no light, and nothing lives there for long.

Before you buy

  • Test your light: at noon, can you read a newspaper without the lamp on? Then a low light plant can live there.
  • Distance: within about 2 to 3 metres of a window, not the far wall
  • Pot: 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inch) with a drainage hole
  • Watering: far less than outdoors; dim plants drink slowly
  • Toxic to pets and toddlers: money plant, dieffenbachia, peace lily, snake plant if chewed

What counts as low light in a flat?

A north facing window, a room shaded by the next building, or a spot two metres back from an east window. Plants there get bright indirect light for a few hours and no direct sun. That’s survivable for a short list of tough tropical understorey plants, the ones that evolved under forest canopy.

What it isn’t: a bathroom with a frosted slit, an inner lobby, or a room where the curtains stay shut all day. In those, even a snake plant just sits, then rots. A cheap fix is a white LED tube or bulb left on for 10 to 12 hours, within 30 to 60 cm of the leaves.

Does it matter whether you live in Karachi or Multan?

Indoors, the city matters less than outdoors, but it still shows up in three ways: humidity, cold and water.

  • Karachi (coastal humid): the easiest indoor climate. Ferns and peace lily do well. Watch for fungus gnats and soggy soil in the monsoon, and salty tap water leaving white crust on the pot.
  • Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur (hot dry): desert air and air conditioners dry leaf edges brown. Group plants together and keep them out of the AC blast. Snake plant and ZZ plant are almost immune.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi (Punjab plains): summer is hot dry, then humid; winter rooms can drop near 10°C at night. Aglaonema and money plant sulk in cold; move them off cold marble floors and away from glass at night.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar (sub humid): cold winter flats without heating are the main threat. Water very little from December to February.
  • Hills: plants live, but grow slowly from November to March. Keep them in the warmest lit room.

How to keep a low light plant alive: the routine

  1. Pot it right: a 15 to 20 cm pot with a hole, in a mix of 2 parts potting soil, 1 part cocopeat and 1 part coarse sand or perlite. The full recipe sits in our potting mix guide.
  2. Water by touch: push a finger in. Money plant and peace lily get water when the top 3 cm is dry; snake plant and ZZ only when the pot feels light and the soil is dry most of the way down. In winter that can mean once a month.
  3. Turn the pot a quarter every week so it doesn’t lean to the window.
  4. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks. Dust on a dim plant is like a curtain over a window.
  5. Feed lightly: a spoon of compost on top in March and July, or a half strength balanced liquid feed monthly from March to September. Nothing in winter.
  6. Empty the tray after watering. Standing water in a saucer is a dengue mosquito nursery.

The schedule for outdoor pots differs a lot: how often to water potted plants covers that.

The rule that kills most indoor plants

Dim light and generous watering together rot roots. If a plant is losing leaves in a dark corner, the instinct is to water more; do the opposite. Let it dry, then move it one metre closer to the window. Most yellowing in flats is wet soil, not thirst.

Which indoor plants to avoid at home with children or pets?

Several of the best low light plants are mildly to moderately toxic. The ASPCA lists money plant (golden pothos) and dieffenbachia as containing insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that burn the mouth and cause drooling, vomiting and trouble swallowing; snake plant contains saponins that cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten. Peace lily belongs in the same oxalate group. None of this matters on a high shelf. It matters a lot on the floor next to a crawling baby or a cat that chews.

Our poisonous plants for kids and pets guide covers garden plants too, including kaner.

Myth: indoor plants clean the air of a whole flat

The famous NASA tests used sealed chambers, not living rooms. A few pots won’t measurably change the air in a flat; ventilation does that. Grow them because they make the room feel alive.

Keep in mind

If a child chews money plant, dieffenbachia or peace lily, wipe out the mouth, give a few sips of water and watch: drooling and mouth pain usually settle, but swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing or swallowing, or repeated vomiting means go to emergency care with a piece of the plant. For pets, call a vet. Never use insect spray indoors near food or children; a wipe with soapy water handles most mealybugs. Wear gloves when you cut dieffenbachia, as the sap irritates skin and eyes.

Low light plant questions

Which indoor plant needs the least light?

ZZ plant and snake plant tolerate the dimmest rooms that still get daylight. Neither survives total darkness, so give them at least a few hours of indirect light or a lamp.

Can money plant grow without sunlight?

It grows without direct sun, but not without light. In a dim room it stays green and trails slowly; in a dark one the leaves shrink and the stems turn long and bare.

What are the best indoor plants for beginners in low light?

Start with snake plant, ZZ plant and money plant. They forgive missed watering, which is the usual beginner mistake in the other direction.

Can indoor plants grow under LED light?

Yes. An ordinary white LED placed close (within 30 to 60 cm) for 10 to 12 hours a day keeps low light plants healthy. Coloured “grow” lights aren’t needed for foliage plants.

Why are the leaf tips of my indoor plant turning brown?

Dry air from an AC or heater, salty tap water, or irregular watering. Move it away from vents, water with stored or filtered water, and flush the pot with plain water every couple of months.

Is snake plant safe in a bedroom?

Yes, as long as nobody chews it. The idea that it fills a bedroom with oxygen overnight is exaggerated; one plant makes very little difference.

Why is my peace lily not flowering?

Too little light is the usual reason. It lives in dim rooms but needs bright indirect light to bloom. Move it nearer a window in spring.

How often should I water indoor plants in winter?

Far less than in summer. Snake plant and ZZ plant may go three to five weeks; money plant about weekly. Check with a finger, never by date.

Which plants should I avoid in a flat with pets?

Dieffenbachia, money plant, peace lily and snake plant are the common ones that cause mouth irritation or stomach upset. Keep them out of reach or choose a spider plant, which the ASPCA lists as non toxic to cats and dogs.
