How to Grow Harsingar (Parijat): Cuttings, Pruning, Flowers

Walk past a harsingar (parijat, night jasmine, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) at dawn in October and the ground under it is white and orange with fallen flowers. Growing one is simpler than its reputation: root a cutting in the monsoon or layer a low branch, plant it where it gets at least five to six hours of sun, prune it once in early spring, and leave it alone through the autumn bloom. Most failures come from shade and from pruning at the wrong time.

The short version

  • Plant: Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, a large shrub or small tree
  • Flowers: white petals, orange tube, open at night, fall by morning; mainly late August to November
  • Sun: 5 to 6 hours or more
  • Pot: 25 to 30 litres (about 40 cm) minimum; the ground is better
  • Propagation: semi-hard cuttings in July and August, ground layering, or seed
  • Prune: February to early March, never after May

Where does harsingar grow well?

Native to the subcontinent, it handles heat but likes some soil moisture.

  • Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi): its happiest range. Plant in March or July to August.
  • Hot dry belt (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur): grows, but give it mulch and a spot with afternoon shade in May and June. Young plants scorch.
  • Karachi: grows well; flowering may be lighter than in the north, where cool autumn nights seem to help.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar: good, with shelter from cold wind. Light frost burns leaf edges.
  • Hills: lower, warmer valleys only.

How do you grow harsingar from cuttings?

Cuttings are the quickest route to flowers. Success is moderate rather than certain, so take several.

  1. In July or August, cut 15 to 20 cm pieces from this year’s stems that are firm but not woody, ideally pencil thickness.
  2. Trim below a node and remove all but the top two leaves. Cut those leaves in half to reduce water loss; harsingar leaves are big and sandpapery.
  3. Dip the base in rooting hormone if you have it; it helps with this plant.
  4. Insert 6 to 8 cm deep in a mix of 1 part soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part cocopeat.
  5. Keep in bright shade, moist but not wet. A clear plastic bag tented over the pot keeps humidity high; open it for a few minutes daily.
  6. Look for new leaves after four to eight weeks. Pot up into a bigger container only once roots fill the small pot, often by the next spring.

Layering: slower but more reliable

Bend a low, flexible branch to the ground in the monsoon. Scrape a 2 cm strip of bark on the underside, pin it under soil with a bent wire and a brick, and keep that spot moist. Roots form over a few months. Cut it free in February and move it with a ball of soil.

Seed

The flat, round seed capsules ripen in winter. Sow fresh seeds 1 cm deep in spring. Seedlings are easy but take a few years longer to flower than a rooted cutting.

Should you grow harsingar in a pot or in the ground?

The ground, if you possibly can. It becomes a spreading shrub or small tree several metres tall, and pot-bound plants flower poorly. In a pot, use at least 25 to 30 litres, prune hard each spring, and repot or root-prune every two to three years. Mix 2 parts soil, 1 part compost and 1 part sand; our potting mix guide covers the ratios.

How do you care for harsingar through the year?

MonthsWhat to do
Feb to MarPrune, add compost, start regular watering
Apr to JunWater deeply; pots may need daily water in 45°C heat; mulch
Jul to AugTake cuttings; check drainage in heavy rain
Sep to NovPeak bloom; steady moisture, no pruning
Dec to JanWater less; protect young plants on frost nights

For watering by month in pots, see our potted plant watering guide.

Best fertiliser for harsingar

Compost or well-rotted manure in February, a few centimetres spread around the base. From July, a liquid feed every three to four weeks with more phosphorus and potassium than nitrogen (a “flowering” formula at half strength) helps buds. Skip feeding after October.

The pruning month that decides your flowers

Prune in February or early March, before the spring flush. Harsingar flowers on the new shoots that grow through summer, so a spring cut gives more branch tips and more flowers. Prune in June or July and you remove those shoots just as buds form, and you will get a thin show that autumn. And for collecting: spread a clean old sheet under the tree in the evening, then gather the flowers from it in the morning, free of dust.

Why is my harsingar not flowering?

  • Too young: cuttings often need two to three years before a good show; seedlings longer.
  • Shade: under five hours of sun, it grows leaves and few flowers.
  • Late pruning: see the box above.
  • Too much nitrogen: dark leafy growth, no buds.
  • Cramped pot: roots circling the pot. Move it up or into the ground.

Why are harsingar leaves turning yellow?

Some yellowing and leaf drop in winter is normal. In summer, yellow leaves with green veins point to a nutrient shortage in alkaline soil; add compost and a little iron chelate or a micronutrient mix as per the label. Overall yellowing with wet soil means waterlogging. Caterpillars: pick off by hand. Mealybugs: dab with a soapy cotton bud.

This page covers harsingar as an ornamental. Its leaves and bark are used in traditional preparations, but don’t make home remedies from them for children, in pregnancy or alongside regular medicines without asking a qualified doctor. The rough leaves can irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves for big pruning jobs. Rooting hormones and any chemical sprays: read the label, use gloves, and store them away from children.

Harsingar plant questions

How long does a harsingar cutting take to root?

Usually four to eight weeks in warm, humid monsoon weather. Leave it undisturbed until new leaves form and roots appear at the drainage hole.

When does harsingar flower?

Mainly from late August to November in the plains, at night. The flowers fall by morning, so the bush looks bare of blooms in the day while the ground is covered.

How do I care for harsingar in winter?

Water less, stop feeding, and protect young potted plants from frost by moving them under a roof edge. Leaf drop in the cold is normal; prune in February as growth starts.

Can harsingar grow in partial shade?

It survives, but flowers far less. Five to six hours of sun is the practical minimum for a good show.

How big does a harsingar plant get?

In the ground, it becomes a large shrub or small tree several metres tall and wide. Pruning keeps it smaller.

Is parijat the same as harsingar?

Yes. Parijat, harsingar, shefali and night jasmine are all names for Nyctanthes arbor-tristis. It is not a true jasmine.

How often should I water harsingar in summer?

In the ground, deeply once or twice a week. In a pot, whenever the top few centimetres dry, which may be daily in May and June.

Why do harsingar flowers fall in the morning?

That is simply how the plant flowers: blooms open at dusk and drop around sunrise. It is not a sign of disease.
