How to Grow Celosia (Murgh Kalgi): Sow Warm, Never Bury Seed

How to grow celosia (murgh kalgi, cockscomb) in one line: wait for warm nights, scatter the tiny seed on the surface of a fine mix without burying it, keep it warm and moist for one to two weeks, and give the plants full sun and a well drained pot. On the plains that means sowing from late March to July. Sow in cold February soil and nothing happens; sow in warmth and it flowers within about two to three months, right through the monsoon.

Before you start

  • Types: crested (cockscomb, murgh kalgi), plume (feathery spikes) and wheat (slim spikes)
  • Sowing (plains): late March to July
  • Germination warmth: about 22 to 27°C, with light
  • Pot: 3 to 5 litres for dwarf types; 8 to 10 litres for tall cockscomb
  • Sun: full sun, 6 hours or more
  • Flowers from seed: roughly 2 to 3 months

Which celosia are you growing?

  • Crested (Celosia argentea var. cristata), the murgh kalgi: velvety, brain or fan shaped heads in deep red, magenta, orange or yellow. Heavy heads on tall types need a stake.
  • Plume (plumosa group): soft feathery flames, the most common nursery celosia, good in pots and borders.
  • Wheat (Celosia spicata and similar): slim pink or silvery spikes, airy and lovely in vases and dried.

All three are grown exactly the same way.

Seed or nursery seedlings?

Seed, for anyone with a little patience and warm weather. It is cheap, sprouts quickly when warm, and gives you colours nurseries don’t stock. Nursery seedlings are worth buying only if they are young and green, not already in flower in a tiny cup: celosia that is root bound and flowering when you buy it often stalls and never grows much bigger. If you do buy, choose plants with buds just forming.

When to sow celosia seeds in Pakistan

Go by night warmth, not the calendar. Mississippi State Extension germinates celosia at about 22 to 27°C, so seed sown into cool soil sits and rots. In practice:

  • Karachi: late February to August.
  • Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: late March to April, and July.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: April to July. A June to July sowing flowers from August to November.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar: late April to June.

Don’t bury the seed

Celosia seed is tiny and needs light to germinate. Scatter it on a damp, fine surface, press it in with the flat of your hand, and mist it. Covering it with even a centimetre of soil is the most common reason for an empty pot. Cover the tray with a clear plastic bag to hold moisture, and remove it as soon as you see green.

How to grow celosia from seed, step by step

  1. Fill a tray or small pots with fine mix: 1 part sieved soil, 1 part cocopeat, 1 part sand or perlite.
  2. Water it first so it is evenly damp.
  3. Sprinkle seed thinly on top and press it in. Don’t cover.
  4. Keep in bright shade, warm, and misted. Seedlings usually appear in about one to two weeks.
  5. Thin to one seedling per cell; snip, don’t pull.
  6. Move into final pots at 4 to 6 leaves with as little root disturbance as possible. Our seed starting guide explains transplanting gently.

Pots, soil, pinching and staking

Use a mix of 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand or cocopeat (see potting mix ratios). Drainage matters most, because the roots rot in waterlogged pots during the monsoon.

Pinch the tip of plume and wheat types once at about 20 to 30 cm to get more, smaller flowers. Mississippi State recommends pinching cockscomb too for branching and even flower size; if you want one giant show head instead, don’t pinch. Push a thin bamboo stick in beside tall crested types early, before the heavy head forms.

Watering and feeding through the seasons

  • Spring: water when the top 2 cm is dry.
  • 45°C days: water at dawn, daily for small pots. Celosia wilts dramatically in heat and recovers in the evening; leaves still limp at sunrise need water.
  • Monsoon: water only between rains, keep pots off saucers, and water the soil, not the flower heads.
  • Cool nights: plants decline from late November and die with frost. Save seed before then.

Feed a spoon of compost monthly or a weak flowering fertiliser every three weeks. Too much nitrogen gives big leaves and small heads.

Why is my celosia not flowering?

  • Shade: fewer than 6 hours of sun.
  • Stunted by a tiny cup: plants that sat root bound in a nursery tray often stay small.
  • Too much nitrogen: all leaf.
  • Still young or sown too early: celosia waits for warmth before it gets going.

Pests and problems, organic first

Aphids and thrips are the usual pests; hose them off and use a soap spray if needed. Snails love young seedlings in the monsoon, so pick them off at night. In long humid spells, powdery mildew and leaf spots appear and crowded heads can rot. Space plants, water at the base and remove damaged heads. If you ever use a chemical, follow the label, wear gloves and keep children and pets clear until dry.

Who should be careful

Young celosia leaves are cooked as a leafy green in several cuisines, and NC State lists the plant as non toxic to cats and dogs. That doesn’t make your balcony plants food: nursery plants are often sprayed, so never eat leaves from a plant you didn’t grow without chemicals, and don’t let children nibble ornamentals. Staked plants have sharp bamboo ends at child eye level; cap them with a cork or bottle cap.

Is celosia annual or perennial?

A tender plant that behaves as an annual almost everywhere. In frost free Karachi a plant may limp on past one season, but it looks tired; resow each year. It readily self seeds, so you may find volunteers in the next monsoon.

How to save celosia seeds

  1. Leave one or two of the best heads on the plant until they fade and turn papery.
  2. Hold a paper bag under the head and shake or rub it; shiny black seeds fall out.
  3. Sieve out the chaff, dry the seed in shade for a few days, and store in a labelled envelope.

Seed from mixed colours won’t always come true, but it usually comes up readily.

Celosia growing questions

Why are my celosia seeds not germinating?

Usually because they were buried or the soil was too cool. Sow on the surface in warm weather and keep the surface damp.

How long does celosia take to flower from seed?

Roughly two to three months in warm weather. Dwarf types are a little quicker than tall cockscomb.

When should I sow murgh kalgi seeds?

From late March to July on the plains, once nights are warm. In Karachi, from late February.

Can celosia grow in pots?

Yes. Dwarf types suit 6 inch pots; tall cockscomb needs 8 to 10 litres and a stake.

Should I deadhead celosia?

Removing faded heads keeps the plant tidy and stops heavy self seeding; it also nudges side shoots to flower.

Can I dry celosia flowers?

Yes. Cut fully developed heads, strip the leaves and hang them upside down in a dark, airy room for a couple of weeks.

Is celosia safe for cats and dogs?

NC State lists it as non toxic to cats and dogs, but sprayed nursery plants are best kept away from pets.

Why do celosia leaves turn yellow?

Wet roots in the monsoon are the usual cause, then hunger in an old pot. Check drainage first.
