Mogra (Arabian Jasmine) in Pots: Cuttings, Pruning and Flowers
If you want to know how to grow mogra at home, start with a rooted plant or a hardwood cutting, give it full sun, prune it hard in late winter, and wait for the white flush from about April through the monsoon. Mogra (Arabian jasmine, motia) loves heat. What it does not forgive is shade and waterlogged roots. A cutting started this spring can give a few flowers in its first summer and a proper flush the next.
In brief
- Best method: stem cuttings or simple layering; buy a nursery plant for a quicker start
- Sun: full sun, 6 hours or more for good flowering
- Pot: start in 8 to 10 litres (10 to 12 inches); move to 15 to 20 litres (14 to 16 inches) later
- Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand
- Flowering: roughly April to September in the plains
- Prune: late January to February, before new growth

When should you plant mogra in Pakistan and North India?
| Zone | Plant or take cuttings | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi and the coast | February to April, or July to August | Salt winds; mealybugs in humid weeks |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | February to March | 45C pots drying by evening |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | February to March, or the monsoon | Frost nights in December and January |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | March to April | Colder winter; shelter pots |
| Hills | Pot only, indoors in winter | Frost kills it outdoors |
Mogra is a tropical shrub. NC State Extension notes jasmines need full sun for best health, and tropical types such as Arabian jasmine don’t take frost.
Which propagation method actually works for mogra?
Semi hardwood cuttings (most reliable)
- In February to March or during the monsoon, cut pencil thick, half ripe stems about 15 cm long with 3 or 4 nodes.
- Remove all but the top two leaves. Cut the base just below a node.
- Push 5 cm deep into damp coarse sand or a sand and cocopeat mix in a small pot.
- Keep in bright shade; don’t let the mix dry fully or turn soggy.
- New leaf buds in three to six weeks usually mean roots. Pot up once roots show at the hole.
Expect some cuttings to fail; take three for every plant you want.
Simple layering (near certain)
- Bend a low, flexible branch down into a neighbouring pot of mix.
- Scrape a little bark off the underside where it touches the soil.
- Pin it down with a bent wire or a stone and cover with 3 cm of mix.
- Keep moist. After about two months, check for roots, then cut it free from the mother plant.
Seed is not a home method for mogra, and grafting is unnecessary. Air layering works too but is more work than ground layering for a plant this flexible.
The late winter haircut
Mogra flowers on fresh shoots. In late January or February, cut every branch back by a third to a half, just above a node, and remove dead twigs. It looks bare for a few weeks, then pushes the new shoots that carry the summer buds. A plant left unpruned gives long bare stems and a few flowers at the tips.
How much water and fertiliser does mogra need?
- Hot dry summer (40 to 45C): often daily in pots, morning or evening; a mulch of dry leaves on the surface keeps the mix cooler.
- Monsoon: only when the top 3 cm is dry; empty saucers.
- Winter: sparingly, once the mix is dry a finger deep. Cold wet roots rot.
Feed from March to August: a handful of compost on the surface each month, plus a feed a little higher in phosphorus and potassium once buds appear. Heavy nitrogen gives leaves, not flowers. See our potting mix guide before repotting.
Why is my mogra not flowering, or turning yellow?
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Lush leaves, no buds | Shade, no pruning, too much nitrogen | Full sun, prune next February, change feed |
| Yellow leaves, green veins | Iron shortage in alkaline soil or water | Add compost; leaf mould or a little iron chelate per label |
| Yellow, dropping leaves in winter | Cold and wet roots | Water less; shelter from frost |
| White fluffy patches | Mealybugs | Wipe off, then neem spray |
| Speckled dull leaves | Spider mites | Spray leaf undersides with water |
| Bud tips eaten, webbing | Bud worm caterpillar | Pick off affected buds daily |
For sticky pests, our mealybug and whitefly guide walks through the steps.
How do you pick the flowers?
Pick buds that are full and white in the late afternoon; they open that evening and scent the room. Fully open morning flowers wilt fast in heat. Picking every day also keeps the plant making buds, because flowers left to fade on the stem signal it to slow down. For gajra, oil and tea uses, see jasmine oil, tea and gajra.
Grow it or skip it?
| Situation | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny balcony or roof | Plant | Scented, tough, flowers for months |
| Ground bed in the plains | Plant | Grows faster and drier spells matter less |
| Under 4 hours of sun | Maybe | Leaves fine, flowers few |
| Hill station outdoors | Skip | Frost |

Mogra is not on the usual lists of dangerous house plants, but don’t let toddlers eat flowers or buds that may have been sprayed. If you use any chemical insecticide or an iron product, follow the label, wear gloves and keep children and pets away until it dries. Strong scent in a closed bedroom can bother people with asthma or migraine; keep cut flowers in a ventilated room.
Mogra plant questions
How long does a mogra cutting take to root?
Usually three to six weeks in warm weather. Monsoon and early spring cuttings root fastest.
Why is my mogra plant not flowering?
Too little sun is the top reason, then skipped pruning. Six hours of sun and a February cut back fix most plants.
What is the best time to plant mogra?
February to March in the plains, or the monsoon. Avoid planting into the peak of June or a frosty January.
Can mogra grow indoors?
Not for flowers. It needs direct sun, so a balcony or roof is the minimum.
Is mogra the same as chameli?
No. Mogra or motia is Jasminum sambac; chameli usually means Jasminum grandiflorum, a looser climber with starry flowers.
Should I remove mogra seed pods?
It rarely sets seed in pots. Just remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy.
Why do mogra buds drop before opening?
Dry soil on a hot day, bud worms or a sudden move are the usual reasons. Keep watering steady once buds form.
How big a pot does mogra need?
Start in 8 to 10 litres and move up to 15 to 20 litres after a year or two, when roots fill the pot.
Does mogra survive winter in Lahore?
Yes in most years, though it sheds leaves. Keep it under a roof on frost nights and water little.
