Spider Plant in Pots: How to Grow It at Home and Root the Babies

Spider plant is the house plant that makes its own babies. Here is how to grow spider plant at home: keep it in bright light out of direct afternoon sun, let the top of the mix dry between waterings, and pot up the little plantlets that dangle from its runners. They root in a glass of water or straight in soil within a couple of weeks. It is one of the few plants that copes with a forgetful owner and a cat in the house.

Quick facts

  • Best method: plantlets (babies) on runners, or dividing an old clump
  • Light: bright indirect; morning sun is fine, afternoon sun scorches
  • Pot: 2 to 4 litres (6 to 8 inches) for a young plant; hanging basket for an older one
  • Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand or cocopeat
  • New plants: a plantlet becomes a fair sized pot in a few months
  • Pets: listed as non toxic for cats and dogs

Where does a spider plant grow best in Pakistan and North India?

It’s a tropical plant that dislikes both frost and harsh sun. Placement changes with the city more than the month.

ZoneBest spotWhen to start new plants
Karachi and the coastShaded balcony or verandah year roundAlmost any month; best February to April
Multan, Sukkur, BahawalpurIndoors or deep shade from April to SeptemberFebruary to March, or October
Lahore, Faisalabad, DelhiVerandah in spring and monsoon, indoors in winterMarch to April, or the monsoon
Islamabad, PeshawarIndoors in winter, shaded outside in summerApril to August
HillsIndoors, bright windowSummer

NC State Extension describes it as preferring medium light, tolerating deep shade and intolerant of direct sunlight.

How do you propagate a spider plant?

Plantlets, rooted in water

  1. Pick a plantlet with small root nubs already showing at its base, about 5 cm across or bigger.
  2. Snip it from the runner.
  3. Stand it in a small glass so only the base and nubs sit in water. Leaves stay dry.
  4. Change the water every few days. Roots of 2 to 3 cm usually show within one to two weeks.
  5. Plant in a small pot of damp mix and keep in shade for a week.

Plantlets, pegged in soil (fewer losses)

  1. Set a small pot of damp mix next to the mother plant.
  2. Rest a plantlet on the surface, still attached, and pin the runner down with a bent wire.
  3. After two to three weeks, tug gently. If it resists, cut the runner.

Division

A crowded old pot can be eased apart in spring into two or three clumps, each with leaves and fleshy roots. Seed works but is slow and pointless when the plant makes copies for free.

No babies? Give it long nights

NC State Extension notes plantlets and runners form when the mother plant gets short days and long, uninterrupted nights for at least three weeks. A pot sitting under a tube light every evening may never make them. Move it to a room that goes dark at night in autumn, and ease off heavy feeding, which also cuts plantlet numbers.

How often should you water a spider plant?

  • Summer (up to 45C outdoors, cooler indoors): when the top 2 to 3 cm is dry, often every 2 to 3 days.
  • Monsoon: less often; it can rot if the mix stays soggy.
  • Winter: about weekly, less in a cold room. It stores water in thick roots and forgives a missed week.

Feed lightly: a handful of compost in spring and again in the monsoon, or a balanced liquid feed at half strength once a month in the growing season. Base mix is covered in our potting mix guide.

Why does my spider plant have brown tips or yellow leaves?

What you seeLikely causeFirst response
Brown tips on many leavesChlorine and fluoride in tap water, salt build upUse stored or rain water; flush the pot monthly
Pale, washed out leavesToo much direct sunMove to bright shade
Yellow, mushy baseOverwateringLet dry; repot if roots smell
Stripes fading to plain greenToo little lightMove nearer a window
Sticky leaves, white fluffMealybugs (occasional)Wipe, then neem spray

NC State Extension links leaf tip burn to chlorine and fluorides in tap water and reports few serious pest problems. For small flying pests in the mix, see our gnats and mealybug guide.

Does the spider plant flower?

Yes. Small white star flowers appear on the same runners that carry plantlets. They’re pretty but minor. If your plant isn’t flowering, it is usually young, in too little light, or getting light at night; none of these harm it.

Before you try it

Spider plant is listed as non toxic for cats, dogs and horses, but cats love chewing it and may vomit leaf bits; hang it higher if that happens. Hanging baskets must be on a hook rated for a wet pot, especially above a cot or sofa. Many other house plants are not this safe, so check our poisonous plants list before buying more. If you ever use a chemical spray indoors, read the label, wear gloves and air the room.

Spider plant questions people ask

Can spider plant grow in water only?

For a few months, yes, but it grows weak. Move rooted plantlets into soil once roots reach 2 to 3 cm.

How fast do spider plant babies root?

Usually within one to two weeks in warm weather, faster if root nubs are already visible.

Should I cut off spider plant babies?

You can leave them for a full trailing look or cut them to pot up. Removing them doesn’t harm the mother.

Can spider plant take direct sun?

Gentle morning sun is fine. Afternoon sun in the plains bleaches and scorches the leaves.

Why is my spider plant not making babies?

It may be young, root bound in a huge pot, overfed, or lit at night. Long dark nights in autumn help most.

Is spider plant safe for cats?

It is listed as non toxic for cats and dogs. Chewing may still cause mild stomach upset.

Do spider plants like small pots?

A slightly snug pot encourages runners, but a pot packed solid with roots dries too fast. Go up one size every year or two.

Can I put spider plant in the bathroom?

Yes, if there is a window. Humidity suits it; darkness doesn’t.

Why are my spider plant leaves bending and limp?

Usually thirst or heat. If the mix is bone dry, soak it; if it is wet, check for root rot.
