How to Grow Jasmine (Motia, Chambeli) at Home in Pots

Here is how to grow jasmine at home without the usual disappointment: root a semi-hard cutting or buy a young Motia in the monsoon, give it a 20 litre pot and full sun, and cut it back hard at the end of November. Flowering begins as the days warm in March and April. Most “my jasmine won’t flower” stories come down to shade, or to skipping that winter cut.

In brief

  • Types: Motia (Arabian jasmine, Jasminum sambac), a bush; Chambeli (Jasminum grandiflorum), a scrambling climber
  • Best method: semi-hardwood cuttings 15 to 20 cm long, or ground layering
  • Planting (plains): July to September, or February to March
  • Pot: 15 to 25 litres (12 inches) for Motia; bigger with a trellis for Chambeli
  • Sun: 6 hours or more
  • Flowers: from March to April, through the summer

Which jasmine should you grow, Motia or Chambeli?

Motia is the round, many-petalled bud strung into gajray, the strongest scent on a summer evening. It grows as a sprawling bush and suits pots. Chambeli has starry, five-petalled flowers and wants something to climb. Both behave the same way in care. If you only have a balcony, choose Motia. For the flowers’ uses in oil, tea and gajray, see our jasmine uses guide; this page is only about growing.

How do you propagate jasmine at home?

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University lists semi-hardwood cuttings 15 to 20 cm long as the standard method for Motia, with layers or rooted cuttings planted out. Seed is not a practical route for home growers; cuttings and layers give a flowering plant far sooner and true to type.

Cuttings

  1. In the warm, humid months (July to September is ideal in the plains), cut 15 to 20 cm pieces of stem that are firm but not yet woody, each with three or four leaf joints.
  2. Remove the lower leaves, keeping two or three at the top.
  3. Insert half the length into a mix of half sand and half compost.
  4. Cover the pot with a clear bag and keep in bright shade.
  5. Expect roots in about four to eight weeks. Fresh leaf growth is your sign.

Layering, the one that rarely fails

  1. Bend a low, year-old shoot down into a small pot of soil set beside the mother plant.
  2. Make a shallow slanting nick on the underside where it touches the soil and bury that part 8 to 10 cm deep, pinned with a bent wire.
  3. Keep it moist. When it has rooted, usually a few months in the warm season, cut it free from the parent.

What pot and potting mix does jasmine need?

Motia is happy in a 15 to 25 litre pot for years. Use 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost and 1 part sand or cocopeat; our potting mix guide explains ratios. Feed with two handfuls of compost after the November pruning, and again in June or July. If you use fertiliser, pick a balanced NPK or one slightly higher in phosphorus and potassium in late winter, not a high-nitrogen leaf feed.

When should you plant jasmine in your city?

How often should you water jasmine?

From April to June, a sunny pot needs water every day, and on a 45C afternoon in Multan a small pot may want a second drink in the evening. During the monsoon, water only when the top few centimetres are dry. From December to February, once every week or so is enough; the bush is resting. On frost nights cover it with an old cloth. The general schedule is in how often to water potted plants.

The mali’s secret: the November haircut

Jasmine flowers on new shoots. TNAU’s guidance for Motia is to cut bushes back to around 50 cm in the last week of November. In a pot, cut every stem back by about half and remove weak, crowded ones. It looks brutal, but spring brings a flush of new stems with buds at every tip. A bush that is never pruned grows long, bare stems with flowers only at the ends.

Why is my jasmine not flowering, or yellowing?

Healthy leaves, no budsUnder 6 hours sun, no pruning, too much nitrogenMove to sun; prune in late November
Yellow new leaves, green veinsIron shortage, common in alkaline soilAdd compost; repot in fresh mix
Yellow leaves, soggy potRoot rotWater less; check drainage

Speckled pale leaves, fine webMites, worse in dry heatHose undersides; neem oil spray

For any chemical spray, read the label, wear gloves and do not pick flowers for gajray or tea until the label’s waiting period is over.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow Motia. It is one of the best value pot plants for the plains: flowers within its first full summer from a rooted cutting, no grafting, and scent from April onward. Skip Chambeli on a tiny balcony without a trellis, and skip both if you get less than four hours of sun.

Before you try it

True jasmine is not counted among common household plant poisons, but do not confuse it with “night jasmine” or other plants sold under jasmine names, such as Carolina jessamine, which is poisonous. Strong scent can trigger headaches or wheeze in some people; keep the pot outdoors if anyone at home has asthma that flares with perfumes. Flowers from sprayed plants should not go into tea or onto skin.

Jasmine growing questions

Why is my jasmine not flowering?

Most often too little sun or no winter pruning. Six hours of light and a hard cut at the end of November usually bring buds the next spring.

What is the best time to plant jasmine in Pakistan?

July to September across the plains, when cuttings root fastest, or February to March before the heat. Karachi can plant from June to October.

What is the best way to propagate jasmine?

Semi-hardwood cuttings in the monsoon, or ground layering, which is slower but almost never fails.

Can I grow Motia in a pot?

Yes. A 15 to 25 litre pot in full sun is enough for a flowering bush for years.

Why are my jasmine leaves turning yellow?

Yellow young leaves with green veins point to iron shortage in alkaline soil; yellow older leaves with wet soil point to overwatering.

Can jasmine grow indoors?

Not well in our climate. It needs direct sun to flower, so a bright balcony or roof is far better than a room.

How do I make jasmine bushy?

Prune by half in late November and pinch the tips of long shoots in early summer.

Does jasmine survive frost?

Light frost scorches the tips but an established plant usually regrows. Cover it on cold nights in Lahore or Islamabad.

When do jasmine flowers bloom?

From about March to April onward through the summer, opening in the evening, which is why buds are picked in the morning for gajray.
