How to Grow Dianthus (Carnation) in Pots: Gritty Mix, Dry Crown
Dianthus is the clove scented winter flower of plains rooftops: frilly pink, red or white blooms over grey green leaves from December to March. How to grow dianthus well comes down to one thing above all, drainage. Sow in October or buy seedlings in November, plant in a gritty mix, water the soil never the crown, and give full winter sun. Carnations (the tall florist type) follow the same rules but need staking and more patience.
The short version
- Sow: late September to October; seedlings in November
- Flowers: about December to March in the plains
- Pot: 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches), 2 to 4 litres per plant; carnation 25 cm
- Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand or brick grit
- Sun: 6 hours or more
- Propagation: seed, stem cuttings, or layering
- Weak spot: wet crowns rot; heat ends flowering

Dianthus, carnation, sweet William: what are you growing?
All are Dianthus. Winter bedding dianthus (Dianthus chinensis hybrids) is short, about 20 to 30 cm, with flat fringed flowers in clusters. It is the one most plains nurseries sell. Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is taller, with one fat, ruffled flower per stem and a strong clove smell; NC State Extension describes it as a perennial that prefers cool temperatures and is intolerant of high heat. Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) has dense round heads. Care is close for all three, so this page covers them together.
Seed or nursery seedlings?
For bedding dianthus, either works. The seed is easy and sprouts within one to two weeks. For carnations, buy seedlings or rooted cuttings: from seed they take months, and colours vary. A beginner gets more joy faster from six nursery plants in November.
When to sow dianthus seeds in Pakistan
| Zone | Sow | Plant out | Bloom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Karachi | Late October | Late November | January to February |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | October | November | December to early March |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Late September to October | November | December to March |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | September | October | December to April |
| Hills | Spring | After frost | Summer; perennial there |
How to grow dianthus from seed
- Fill a tray with fine seed mix (see our seed starting guide).
- Sow thinly and cover with a few millimetres of mix.
- Keep in bright shade and lightly damp; sprouts come in one to two weeks.
- Prick out at two true leaves into small pots.
- Pot up at five or six leaves into the gritty mix below, setting the crown at soil level, never buried.
- Pinch bedding types once at about 10 cm for a bushier plant.
The gritty mix dianthus loves
NC State lists carnation soil as moist but well drained and gritty, neutral to slightly alkaline. That suits the plains well, because most of our soil and tap water lean alkaline anyway. Use 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost and 1 part coarse sand or crushed brick. Our potting mix guide explains why plain cocopeat stays too wet for this plant. Clay pots beat plastic here: they breathe and dry faster.
Water the soil, not the plant
Dianthus forms a tight mound of leaves right at soil level. Water poured over the top sits in that mound and the crown rots from the centre out. Use a can with a narrow spout, lift the leaves with one hand and water the soil at the edge of the pot, in the morning. Add a thin layer of grit or small pebbles around the crown so it sits dry even after rain.
Dianthus care in pots
Water by season
Let the top 2 to 3 cm dry between waterings: every three days in November, every five to seven in December and January fog. Carnations in spring sun may need water every second day. Dianthus forgives a dry week far more readily than a wet one.
Frost and heat
Established plants take light frost in Lahore and Islamabad without fuss. Heat is the enemy: as March days pass 32 to 35C, flowering slows and plants look tired. In the plains, most people treat bedding dianthus as an annual and restart each autumn.
Feeding and deadheading
Compost at planting and a light flowering feed monthly. Snip spent flower clusters down to the next pair of leaves every few days; bedding types often throw a second flush.
Staking carnations
Tall carnations fall over with a big flower. Push a thin bamboo cane in at planting, before roots spread, and tie loosely as they grow.
Propagation beyond seed: cuttings and layering
Good for keeping a favourite colour. NC State lists stem cuttings as a recommended method.
- Cuttings (February or October): take a non flowering shoot about 8 to 10 cm long, pull off the lower leaves, push it 2 to 3 cm into damp sand and compost, and keep in bright shade. Roots usually form in three to four weeks. Success is good with fresh, firm shoots.
- Layering: bend a long side shoot to the soil, nick the underside at a leaf joint, pin it down with a bent wire, cover with a little mix. Cut it free once it roots, often in a month.
Why is my dianthus not flowering?
| Sign | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Leafy, no buds | Shade or rich feeding | Full sun; stop nitrogen |
| Centre turns brown, mushy | Crown rot | Gritty mix, water the edge |
| Orange powdery spots | Rust | Remove spotted leaves; keep foliage dry |
| Flowers stop in March | Heat | Afternoon shade; normal season end |
| Curled tips, sticky leaves | Aphids | Water jet, mild soap spray |
Is dianthus annual or perennial?
Many types are perennial in nature, and in the hills they can last several years. In the plains, summer heat and monsoon wet usually kill them, so they behave as winter annuals. Carnations in a sheltered, shaded pot sometimes survive a Lahore summer; enjoy it if yours does.
How to save dianthus seeds
Leave a few flowers to fade in February. The pod behind the petals swells, turns tan and opens at the tip. Tip the flat black seeds onto paper, dry for a week, and store in a labelled envelope. Hybrid bedding plants may not come true, so expect a mix.
Carnations are listed by NC State Extension as a problem for cats and dogs, with mild stomach upset and skin irritation in people from an unknown irritant. Keep pots where pets cannot chew them, and wear gloves if your skin reacts. For pests use water and mild soap first; with any chemical spray read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until dry. If a pet chews a lot of the plant and vomits repeatedly or seems unwell, call a vet.
Dianthus questions
How long does dianthus take to flower from seed?
Bedding types take roughly ten to twelve weeks. Carnations from seed take much longer, often a full season.
Do dianthus come back every year?
In the hills, often yes. In the plains, the heat usually kills them, so replant each autumn.
Should I deadhead dianthus?
Yes. Cutting spent clusters back to a leaf pair encourages a second wave of flowers.
Can dianthus grow in shade?
It grows but flowers poorly. Six hours of direct sun is the target.
Why are my dianthus leaves turning yellow?
Usually wet soil and poor drainage. Check the hole, add grit and water less often.
How do I make carnations bloom bigger?
Remove the small side buds on each stem, leaving the top one. Stake the stem so it stays upright.
What is the best pot for dianthus?
A clay pot 15 to 20 cm wide with a good drainage hole. Clay dries faster, which this plant likes.
Are dianthus flowers edible?
Some are used as garnish, but carnation can irritate, so only use unsprayed petals sparingly, and skip them if unsure.
