How to Grow Pansy and Viola: Seedlings Beat Seed in the Plains

Want pansies this winter? Buy nursery seedlings in November, pot them in loose, well drained mix, give them full winter sun and pick off faded flowers, and they will bloom from December until the heat arrives in March or April. Growing pansy from seed is possible but fussy in the plains, because the seed wants cool conditions that October rarely gives. Here is how to do both, honestly ranked, plus why pansies stop flowering and what to expect when summer comes.

In brief

  • Best route for beginners: nursery seedlings in November
  • From seed: sow late September to October in a cool, shaded spot
  • Pot: 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches), 2 to 4 litres, per plant; or a 30 cm bowl for three
  • Sun: full winter sun; morning sun only once March warms
  • Flowers: December to March in the plains
  • Life cycle: grown as a winter annual; heat finishes it
  • Violas: smaller flowers, more of them, a little more heat tolerant

Seedlings or seed: the honest answer

For a first pansy winter, seedlings win, clearly. Pansy seed is small, slow and sulks in warmth; Clemson Cooperative Extension notes pansies grow and flower best below about 24C (75F), and the plains are often warmer than that in October afternoons. Nursery growers raise seedlings under shade cloth with controlled watering. Their trays are ready in November, just as your weather turns right.

Grow from seed if you want unusual colours, dozens of plants, or the challenge. Expect patchy germination your first year.

Karachi’s mild, humid winter is short; pansies there are a two month treat.

Planting nursery seedlings

  1. Choose compact plants with buds, not full flowers, and no yellow lower leaves.
  2. Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand or cocopeat (see our potting mix guide). Pansies want drainage above all.
  3. Plant at the same depth they sat in the tray. Burying the crown invites rot.
  4. Water in and keep in light shade for two days, then move into full sun.
  5. Space three plants per 30 cm bowl so air moves between them.

How to grow pansy from seed

If you are trying seed, use a tray with fine mix, as in our seed starting guide, and keep it cool.

  1. Sow on the surface and cover with a thin layer of fine mix so the seed sits in the dark.
  2. Place the tray in the coolest shaded spot you have, a north facing room or under a stair, until sprouts show, usually one to three weeks.
  3. Move sprouted seedlings into bright light at once, or they stretch.
  4. Prick out into small pots at two true leaves.
  5. Plant out in November when they have five or six leaves.

The one third haircut

When plants look tired and flower less in February, cut every stem back by about a third and give a little compost. Clemson’s extension team recommends this cut back to push fresh growth, and in the plains it often buys three or four more weeks of flowers before the heat ends things.

Pansy care in pots

Water

Let the top centimetre or two dry, then water the soil, not the flowers. Clemson advises against overhead watering. In practice that is every two or three days in November and every four to six in a foggy January. Soggy, cold pots rot the crowns.

Sun

Full sun in December and January. From March, move pots to where they get morning sun and afternoon shade; that is the single best way to stretch the season.

Food

Compost in the mix plus a light flowering feed every three to four weeks. Clemson also notes pansies like a slightly acidic mix; most plains tap water is alkaline, so a compost rich mix helps.

Deadheading

Pinch off faded flowers with their little stalk every few days. A pansy setting seed slows down.

Is pansy annual or perennial?

Botanically pansies can live more than one year, but in the plains they are winter annuals: once days pass 35C they collapse. In the hills they may carry on into summer. Do not try to keep plains pansies through June; start fresh each November.

How to save pansy seeds

Possible, rarely worth it. Most nursery pansies are F1 hybrids, so saved seed gives mixed, often duller plants. If you want to try, let a few flowers fade, watch for the small three part pod to turn pale and point upward, and pick it just before it splits, as it flings seed when it opens. Dry in a paper bag.

Keep in mind

Only eat pansy or viola flowers you grew yourself without sprays; nursery plants are often treated, so wait several weeks of new growth. Pick petals, rinse, and use a few as garnish. For pests use water and mild soap first; any chemical spray means reading the label, wearing gloves and keeping children and pets away until it dries. If a child chews an unknown sprayed plant and seems unwell, seek medical help and take the pack or plant with you.

Pansy questions people ask

How long do pansies take to flower from seed?

Around three to four months. That is why buying November seedlings gets flowers far sooner.

Can pansies survive summer in Pakistan?

Not in the plains. They decline in March or April as heat rises. Treat them as a winter display.

Do pansies need full sun?

Yes in winter, for compact plants and many flowers. In the warm weeks of spring, afternoon shade helps them last.

What is the difference between pansy and viola?

Violas have smaller, more numerous flowers and handle a little more heat. Pansies have bigger faces. Care is the same.

How often should I water pansies in pots?

When the top centimetre or two is dry. Usually every two to six days depending on the week.

Why are my pansy leaves turning yellow?

Most often from overwatering in cold weather or lack of food. Let the pot dry a little and add compost.

Are pansy flowers edible?

Yes, as garnish, if grown without sprays. Use a few petals, not handfuls.

Can I grow pansies indoors?

Not well. They need cool air and direct sun, so a balcony or roof is better than a warm room.

Should I cut back leggy pansies?

Yes, by about a third, then feed lightly. They usually push new flowering shoots.
