How to Grow Kalanchoe in Pots and Get It to Flower Again
Kalanchoe is the succulent sold in full bloom on nursery shelves every winter, and the one that sits green for a year afterwards. To grow kalanchoe that flowers again, treat it like a cactus for water and like a poinsettia for light: dry between drinks, and long, totally dark nights for at least six weeks in autumn.
In brief
- Flowers: winter to spring (December to April in the plains)
- Pot: 5 to 6 inches (about 1 to 2 litres), with drainage holes
- Mix: half garden soil or cocopeat, half coarse sand or grit
- Light: bright, 6 to 8 hours, morning sun best
- Water: only when the mix is dry 3 to 4 cm down
- Pets: toxic to cats and dogs

How do you propagate kalanchoe?
Stem cuttings are the easy, reliable method. Leaf cuttings also work but are slower. Seed is tiny and rarely sold.
- Cut a 6 to 8 cm stem tip with a few pairs of leaves, any time from February to October (avoid peak June heat).
- Pull off the bottom pair of leaves.
- Leave it in shade for 2 to 3 days until the cut end looks dry and calloused.
- Insert 2 cm deep into dry sandy mix. Do not water for 3 to 4 days, then water lightly.
- Roots form in 2 to 4 weeks. A gentle tug that meets resistance means it has rooted.
For a leaf cutting, twist off a whole leaf, let it dry for a day or two, and lay its base on sandy mix. Tiny plantlets grow from the base in a few weeks.
What light and water does kalanchoe need through the year?
NC State’s extension guide describes it as wanting bright light, with afternoon shade because long direct sun can scorch leaves. In our climate that means an east facing balcony or a south window with morning sun.
| Season | Water (5 inch pot) | Light |
|---|---|---|
| Nov to Feb | Every 10 to 14 days | Full winter sun is fine |
| Mar to Apr | Every 6 to 8 days | Morning sun |
| May to Jun (45C) | Every 4 to 6 days, early morning, when dry | Bright shade |
| Monsoon | Rarely; keep out of rain | Under a roof |
Overwatering is the classic killer. See how often to water potted plants and our potting mix ratios for a gritty blend.
Why is my kalanchoe not flowering?
Almost always light at night. Kalanchoe is a short-day plant. NC State’s guidance is total darkness for 14 hours a day for at least six weeks in autumn and winter. A bedroom lamp, TV glow or streetlight is enough to keep it green.
The October cupboard routine
From early October, put the pot in a cupboard or under a thick box from 6 pm to 8 am, and in bright light all day. Keep it up for six weeks and stop watering heavily. Buds usually appear soon after, and the plant flowers through winter. Also pinch off each dead flower cluster at its base so it does not spend energy on seed.
Other causes: too much shade all year, a pot of rich wet soil, or heavy nitrogen feeding that makes floppy green growth.
What fertiliser does kalanchoe need?
Very little. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month in spring and early autumn. During flowering, a potash-rich feed at half strength is fine. Skip feeding in midsummer heat and in the monsoon.
When should you prune kalanchoe?
Cut back right after flowering finishes, usually March to April: remove old flower stalks and trim leggy stems by a third. Those trimmings make your cuttings. A light pinch in June shapes it.
Do not prune after mid September. Late pruning removes the shoot tips where buds form, and you lose the winter flowers.
Why are kalanchoe leaves turning yellow or soft?
- Soft, yellow, translucent lower leaves: too much water. Let it dry fully and check roots for black rot.
- Wrinkled leaves: genuinely thirsty, often after a hot week.
- Red or bronze edges: strong sun; usually harmless.
- White cottony clusters: mealybugs. Dab with cotton dipped in surgical spirit, or see pot pests.
- Stretched stems with gaps between leaves: too little light.
How do you care for kalanchoe in winter?
Winter is its season. Give it the sunniest spot, water sparingly, and bring it in on frost nights in Lahore, Delhi or Peshawar; it is a tropical succulent and frost turns leaves to mush. In hill stations keep it indoors at a bright window.
Kalanchoe contains compounds (bufadienolides) that are toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy, and in pets abnormal heart rhythm can occur. Place pots high up away from cats, dogs and toddlers, and call a vet or doctor promptly if any part has been eaten. Our list of poisonous house plants covers others to check.
Plant, maybe or skip?
| Situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny window, tends to forget watering | Plant | Forgives neglect better than most |
| Wants it to flower again every winter | Maybe | Needs the six week dark routine |
| Cat or puppy that chews plants | Skip | Toxic if eaten |
| Dark north facing flat | Skip | Stretches and never blooms |

Kalanchoe questions, answered
How do you make kalanchoe bloom again?
Give it about 14 hours of total darkness each night for at least six weeks from early autumn, with bright light by day. Remove spent flowers so energy goes into new buds.
How do I grow kalanchoe from cuttings?
Cut a stem tip, let the end dry for 2 to 3 days, plant it in dry sandy mix and wait a few days before watering. It roots in 2 to 4 weeks.
Can kalanchoe grow from a single leaf?
Yes. Let the leaf dry for a day, lay its base on sandy mix, and keep it barely moist. Baby plants appear in a few weeks, and flowering takes longer than from a stem cutting.
How often should I water kalanchoe?
Only when the mix is dry a few centimetres down. That is roughly every 10 to 14 days in winter and more often in hot weather.
Why are my kalanchoe leaves turning yellow?
Mostly from overwatering or a pot without drainage. Let it dry out, and repot in gritty mix if roots smell bad.
Is kalanchoe toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. Eating it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and heart rhythm problems, so keep it well out of reach and see a vet quickly if chewed.
Can kalanchoe take full sun?
Winter sun is fine all day. From April, give it morning sun and afternoon shade so leaves do not scorch.
When should I prune kalanchoe?
Right after flowering, around March or April. Avoid pruning after mid September or you cut off next winter’s buds.
What is the best fertilizer for kalanchoe?
A balanced liquid feed at half strength monthly in spring and autumn, and a potash-rich feed while it flowers. Less is better than more.
