How to Grow Hollyhock (Gul-e-Khaira): Sow in October, Beat Rust

To grow hollyhock (Gul-e-Khaira) on the plains, sow the flat seeds in October straight into a deep pot or a sunny wall bed, give them winter to build a root, and expect tall spikes from about March into April. The one thing that ruins them is rust, orange spots under the leaves, and the fix is boring and early: strip infected lower leaves the day you see them.

The short version

  • Botanical name: Alcea rosea; Urdu Gul-e-Khaira, Hindi gulkhaira
  • Sow on the plains: October to mid November
  • Bloom: roughly March to April in Lahore and Delhi, a little earlier in Multan
  • Pot: 20 to 25 litres (14 to 16 inch, deep); ground is far better
  • Sun: 6 hours or more
  • Height: NC State lists 5 to 8 feet; short double strains stay near 3 feet

Is hollyhock an annual, a biennial or a perennial?

Officially it is a biennial or short lived perennial: in cold countries it makes leaves in year one and flowers in year two. NC State’s plant toolbox describes it as biennial to annual and notes it reseeds readily. On our plains the long mild winter does the job of that first year, so an October sowing commonly flowers the following spring. Plants that survive summer in light shade may flower again, but most gardeners here treat it as a one season plant and sow fresh each autumn.

How do I grow hollyhock from seed?

  1. Choose the spot: against a sunny wall or fence, where wind can’t snap the spike. Ground beats a pot.
  2. Prepare: loosen the bed 30 cm deep and fork in a bucket of compost per square metre. For pots, use 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand.
  3. Sow 2 seeds per spot, about 1 cm deep, 45 cm (18 inches) apart.
  4. Water gently; seedlings usually show in 1 to 2 weeks.
  5. Thin to the stronger seedling once both have 3 true leaves.
  6. Stake in February when the stem starts to rise, tying loosely every 30 cm.

You can raise them in seed trays (see our seed tray guide), but hollyhock grows a long tap root, so move seedlings while still small, at 3 to 4 leaves.

Seed or nursery seedlings?

Seed, for most people. It is large, cheap and germinates readily. Nursery seedlings are fine if they are young and in deep bags, but an old, root bound seedling in a small pot often flowers short and early and then fails. If you buy, buy in late October or November, not February.

When to sow in each climate zone

Rust: strip early, water low

Turn over the lowest leaves every few days from January. Rust shows first as small raised orange or brown bumps underneath, with yellow spots on top. Pull those leaves off and bin them, never compost them. Water the soil, not the leaves, in the morning so the plant is dry by evening. NC State lists rust among the plant’s main problems, and in practice the gardeners who keep it tidy from the bottom up get clean spikes; the ones who wait until March lose the race.

How much water and feed does hollyhock need?

Winter: deep watering every 5 to 7 days in the ground, every 3 to 4 days in pots. Frost nights in the Punjab rarely bother established plants. As the spike rises in February and March, water more often, and in pots daily once days pass 35°C. A side dressing of compost in January, or a balanced NPK feed at half the label rate once a month in pots, is plenty. Heavy nitrogen gives soft, rust prone leaves.

Why is my hollyhock not flowering?

  • Sown late: January sowings on the plains often run out of cool weather before flowering.
  • Too small a pot: under 15 litres, the root can’t support a spike.
  • Shade: under 6 hours gives a leaning, flowerless stem.
  • Hill garden: a spring sowing may only make leaves in year one. Wait.

Other pests and problems

Aphids gather on buds; wash them off with a jet of water. Leaf eating beetles and caterpillars make holes; hand pick in the evening. Leaf spot and anthracnose show as dark patches, managed the same way as rust: remove, space, keep leaves dry. If you choose a fungicide, use one labelled for rust on ornamentals, read the whole label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until it dries.

The traditional view

Gul-e-Khaira flowers are a familiar name in Unani tradition and in old desi households, where the dried flowers were sold by pansaris. That is tradition, not a reason to brew garden flowers: plants raised with sprays are not food, and herbal use belongs with a qualified practitioner.

Take care if

Hollyhock leaves and stems are bristly and can irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves when stripping leaves. Tall spikes on a roof edge catch wind; stake them firmly and keep heavy pots away from parapets. Don’t eat or brew flowers from plants that were sprayed.

How do I save hollyhock seeds?

After petals drop, a round, flat “wheel” of seeds forms. Let it turn brown and dry on the stem, usually in April or May. Pick the wheels, break them into a paper bag and leave two weeks. The seeds peel off like coins from a roll. Store dry in an envelope until October. Colours from mixed plants will cross, so expect surprises.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it if you have a sunny wall bed: few winter flowers give such height for so little money. Maybe in a deep 20 litre pot on a sheltered terrace. Skip it on a windy high roof or if you can’t stand pulling spotty leaves every week in spring. For more ideas see Phool aur Paudhe, and for the mix itself our potting mix ratio guide.

Hollyhock questions gardeners ask

When should I sow hollyhock seeds in Pakistan?

October to mid November on the plains, and November in Karachi. In the hills sow from March to May, but plants may not flower until the following year.

How long does hollyhock take to flower from seed?

On the plains an October sowing usually flowers in March or April, about five months later. In cold climates it can take a full year.

Can hollyhock grow in pots?

Yes, in a deep pot of at least 20 litres with a stake. Plants are shorter than in the ground and need more frequent watering.

What are the orange spots under hollyhock leaves?

That is hollyhock rust, a fungus. Remove spotted leaves at once, water at soil level and keep plants spaced so air moves.

Why is my hollyhock leaning over?

Wind and a top heavy spike. Stake it early, before it leans, and tie loosely every 30 cm.

Does hollyhock come back every year?

Sometimes, as a short lived perennial, but on the hot plains most plants weaken after summer. Fresh October sowing is more reliable.

Should I cut hollyhock after flowering?

Cut the spike once flowers fade unless you want seed. Cutting can sometimes bring side shoots.

Is Gul-e-Khaira the same as hollyhock?

Yes, Gul-e-Khaira is the common Urdu name for hollyhock, Alcea rosea.
