How to Grow Snapdragon From Seed: Surface Sow, Pinch, Stake

Snapdragons are the tall spikes of winter colour that children love to “snap” open. How to grow snapdragon in the plains: sow the dust fine seed on the surface in October (do not cover it), plant out in November, pinch once, stake against wind, and enjoy spikes from about January to March. Heat ends them in April. Seedlings from a nursery are the easier start; seed is cheap but fiddly.

Before you start

  • Sow: late September to October; seedlings in November
  • Seed trick: surface sow, light helps germination
  • Pot: 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) per plant; tall types 25 cm
  • Sun: full winter sun
  • Bloom: about January to March in the plains
  • Weak spots: rust disease, wind, and heat

Seed or nursery seedlings?

Seedlings for a first try. Snapdragon seed is almost as fine as dust, needs cool temperatures and light to sprout, and the seedlings are slow for their first month. A nursery tray in November skips all that. Grow from seed if you want a particular colour or height, or many plants; it is perfectly doable with the method below.

The University of Florida extension describes late autumn to early spring as the snapdragon season in a warm climate, with summer heat stunting plants and stopping flowering. The plains behave the same way.

How to grow snapdragon from seed

This follows the University of Florida’s greenhouse method, scaled down for a balcony.

  1. Chill: put the seed packet in the fridge (not freezer) for three to five days. UF notes germination is more uniform after chilling.
  2. Fill a tray with fine, damp seed mix (our seed starting guide shows how).
  3. Sow on the surface: tip the seed onto a folded paper and tap it across the mix. Press lightly with your palm. Do not cover; the seed needs light.
  4. Cover the tray with clear plastic and keep in bright shade at room temperature. UF gives 7 to 10 days at about 17 to 20C; in a warm October room it may take longer.
  5. Remove the cover as soon as sprouts appear and give strong light, or seedlings go thin and floppy.
  6. Prick out into small pots when true leaves form, about two to three weeks later.
  7. Plant out in November at five or six leaves.

One pinch, five spikes

When a young plant is about 10 cm tall with three or four leaf pairs, pinch out the tip above a leaf pair. Instead of one central spike you usually get four to six side spikes, a little shorter but far more colour per pot. Skip the pinch only for tall cut flower varieties where you want one long stem.

Snapdragon care in pots

Mix and pot

Use 2 parts soil, 1 part compost and 1 part sand or cocopeat (see potting mix ratios). One plant per 15 to 20 cm pot, or three in a 30 cm trough.

Water

Water when the top 2 cm are dry, at the soil. Every three days in November, every five to seven in foggy weeks. Wet leaves invite rust. Our guide on how often to water pots by season has the finger test in detail.

Staking

Tall varieties catch the wind on a roof. NC State Extension notes tall plants may need staking. Push a thin cane in at planting and tie the spike loosely as it rises.

Feeding and deadheading

Monthly flowering feed at half strength. When a spike finishes, cut it down to the first strong side shoot; a second, smaller flush often follows.

Why is my snapdragon not flowering?

SignCauseFix
Tall, thin and paleLow lightFull sun from seedling stage
Orange brown pustules under leavesRustRemove affected leaves, water the soil only, space plants
Plant collapses, wet soilRoot rotBetter drainage, water less
Few spikes, stunted in MarchHeatNormal end; afternoon shade helps a little
Sticky curled tipsAphidsWater jet, mild soap spray

NC State lists snapdragon as highly susceptible to rust. If rust appears every year, buy rust resistant varieties and do not grow snapdragons in the same pot two winters running.

Is snapdragon annual or perennial?

NC State calls it a short lived tender perennial grown as an annual. In the plains it dies or turns scraggly in the heat, so treat it as a winter annual. In mild hill gardens a plant cut back after flowering sometimes returns.

Propagation: cuttings for a favourite colour

UF describes rooting snapdragon from cuttings: take a healthy non flowering shoot, strip the leaves from the lower two thirds, set it in damp mix in a cool, humid spot. Rooting takes about two to three weeks. Do this in February to have young plants, though in the plains they rarely survive summer, so it is mainly useful in the hills.

How to save snapdragon seeds

Leave a spike to fade. Each flower forms a small pod that dries to brown and opens at the top like a little skull. Cut the spike, turn it upside down into a paper bag, and shake. Store in a paper envelope. Hybrids may not come true to colour.

Worth knowing first

Snapdragon is not one of the well known poisonous garden plants, but no ornamental is a snack; keep pots where toddlers and pets cannot chew them. For aphids and rust start with water, removal of leaves and mild soap; if you use a fungicide or insecticide, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until it dries. If a child swallows a sprayed plant part and seems unwell, get medical help and take the spray pack.

Snapdragon questions

How long does snapdragon take to flower from seed?

About three to four months. October sowings usually flower from January.

Do snapdragon seeds need light to germinate?

Yes. Sow on the surface and press in lightly. Covering the fine seed is the most common reason nothing comes up.

Should I pinch snapdragons?

Yes, once at about 10 cm, for more spikes. Skip it only for single stem cut flower types.

Can snapdragons grow in summer in Pakistan?

Not in the plains. Heat stunts them and stops flowering. Hill gardens can grow them in summer.

Why are my snapdragons falling over?

Wind, weak light or heavy spikes. Stake tall types at planting and give full sun.

Will snapdragons rebloom after cutting?

Often yes. Cut the spent spike to a side shoot and a smaller second flush follows.

Can I grow snapdragons in small pots?

Dwarf types manage in 15 cm pots. Tall types want 20 to 25 cm and a stake.

Are snapdragons safe for pets?

They are not listed among the common toxic plants, but any plant can upset a stomach. Keep pets from chewing them.
