How to Grow Alyssum from Seed: Honey Scented Edging That Helps
Sweet alyssum is the low white carpet that smells of honey on a still winter evening, and it is easy: scatter the tiny seeds on the surface of a damp, very well drained pot between October and November, press them in without covering, and give 5 or more hours of sun. Plant a strip beside your vegetables and it earns its place twice, because the flowers feed hoverflies whose larvae eat aphids.

How do I grow alyssum from seed?
The seed is dust fine, so the classic beginner mistake is burying it. Here is the method that works on a balcony.
- Mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part sand or fine brick grit, 1 part compost. If you use cocopeat, keep it to a quarter; it holds too much water for alyssum.
- Wet the pot first until water runs out of the hole, then let it drain 20 minutes.
- Pinch and sprinkle: mix a pinch of seed with a spoon of dry sand so it spreads evenly over the surface.
- Press, don’t cover: pat the seed down with your palm, or dust the thinnest layer of soil on top.
- Mist daily with a spray bottle until sprouts show, usually within a week to ten days in mild October weather.
- Thin to clumps about 15 cm (6 inches) apart when they’re 3 cm tall. Crowded alyssum rots at the base.
Prefer trays? See our seed starting at home guide, then move small clumps of 3 or 4 seedlings together rather than single plants.
Seed or nursery plants: which should a beginner buy?
Here nursery plants genuinely win for many beginners. A tray of flowering alyssum costs little in November, transplants without fuss, and gives instant edging. Seed is cheaper per plant and easy once you get the “don’t bury it” lesson, so a sensible plan is both: buy one tray for the front of the house, sow a packet along the vegetable bed.
Where and when does alyssum bloom best?
| Zone | Sow | Best bloom |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | November to December | January to March |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | October to November | December to April |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Late October to November | January to March |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | October, or February | February to May |
| Hills | March to April | May to September |
NC State’s extension notes that blooms decline in hot summers and that cutting plants back can bring more flowers. On our plains that means a light trim in March buys a few extra weeks, but nothing survives a 45°C pot on a roof in June.
The hoverfly strip
Sow a 10 cm wide line of alyssum along the sunny edge of your palak, methi or mustard bed in October. Hoverflies, the small wasp-striped flies that hover still in mid air, visit for nectar and lay eggs near aphid colonies, and their larvae eat aphids. It won’t wipe out a big infestation, but it tilts the balance before you reach for any spray. NC State lists alyssum among plants that attract predatory insects.
How often should I water alyssum in pots?
Water when the top 2 cm is dry, usually every 3 to 4 days in a December clay pot in Lahore, every 2 days in Karachi, and daily by late March. Never let the pot stand in a saucer of water: NC State calls very good drainage a must, and stem and crown rots are the commonest way to lose it. On frost nights the plant is fairly tough, but a light cloth overnight protects open flowers.
Why is my alyssum not flowering?
- Heat: sown in September, it sat through hot weeks and went leggy. Trim by a third and wait for cool nights.
- Shade: below 4 hours of sun it stretches and flowers thinly.
- Waterlogging: grey, mushy stems at the base. Repot into grittier mix, or start again.
- Rich feeding: a little compost is plenty. A weak liquid feed once a month in a pot is the most it needs.
Pests and diseases: what to try first
Downy mildew shows as yellow patches on top of leaves with grey fuzz underneath in damp, foggy spells. Cut affected stems, space plants wider and water the soil, not the leaves. Aphids are rare on alyssum itself. If you ever spray anything near the vegetable bed, read the label, wear gloves, keep kids and pets off until dry, and remember it may harm the hoverflies you invited in.
Alyssum is not on the common poisonous plant lists, but pets nibbling any garden plant can vomit, so keep an eye on puppies. Don’t confuse it with yellow “basket of gold” or other plants sold loosely as alyssum; buy by the botanical name where you can. For plants that are genuinely dangerous in a house with children, see our guide to poisonous plants for kids and pets.
How do I save alyssum seeds?
From March, the flower spikes turn into little flat round pods. When the lower pods are papery and brown, cut the spikes into a paper bag and leave them a week. Shake hard: the tiny seed collects at the bottom. Sieve out the chaff with a tea strainer and store in an envelope. Honestly, in a ground bed alyssum often self seeds and you will find new seedlings in October anyway.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it. It is cheap, fragrant, small enough for any pot or wall edge, and it is useful to a food garden. Skip only if your space gets less than 4 hours of sun. It works in pots or ground equally. For a bolder partner in the same border, try nasturtium, and for more winter flowers browse Phool aur Paudhe. Getting the mix right matters more than anything; our potting mix ratio guide explains the parts.
Sweet alyssum, answered
How do I grow alyssum from seed?
Sprinkle the seed on the surface of a damp, gritty mix, press it in without covering, and mist daily. It usually sprouts within ten days in mild autumn weather.
When should I sow alyssum in Pakistan?
October to November on the plains, November to December in Karachi, and March to April in the hills.
How long does alyssum take to bloom from seed?
Commonly about six to eight weeks. Seedlings sown in mid October in Lahore often flower by mid December.
Does alyssum come back every year?
It is an annual or short lived perennial. On our plains it dies in summer heat, but it often self seeds into the bed.
Why are my alyssum stems turning brown and mushy?
Overwatering and poor drainage cause stem and crown rot. Let the pot dry between waterings and use more sand or grit in the mix.
Should I cut back alyssum?
Yes, when it looks thin, trim the whole plant by about a third with scissors. New flowers usually follow within a few weeks in cool weather.
Does alyssum need full sun?
It blooms best with five to six hours. It tolerates part shade but flowers less and gets leggy.
Is alyssum good for a vegetable garden?
Yes, as an edging. Its small flowers feed hoverflies and other beneficial insects that help keep aphids down.
