How to Grow Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) in Hot, Dry Summers

Gaillardia (blanket flower) is the flower to grow where everything else fries. Sow seed in late February to March or in September to October on the plains, give it full sun and poor, sandy, fast draining soil, water sparingly, and it flowers in red, orange and yellow pinwheels for months. The one way to kill it is kindness: rich, wet soil rots it.

Quick facts

  • Type: short lived perennial, often grown as an annual
  • Sowing (plains): late February to March, and September to October
  • Pot: 5 to 8 litres (8 to 10 inch) per plant, or 3 plants in a 30 litre trough
  • Sun: 6 hours or more of direct sun
  • Water: only when the top few centimetres are dry
  • Flowers from seed: usually around 2 to 3 months after sowing

Seed or nursery seedlings: which is better for beginners?

Seed, honestly. Gaillardia seed is large, easy to handle and germinates without fuss in warm weather, and a single packet fills a whole terrace edge. Nursery seedlings save you about six weeks and make sense only if you missed the sowing window or want a named colour right away. Avoid nursery plants sitting in soggy black soil; they often arrive with the start of root rot.

When to sow gaillardia seeds in Pakistan and North India

  • Karachi: September to November, and February.
  • Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: late February to March, and late September to October once the heat breaks.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: late February to March, and September to October.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar: March to April, and September.

Spring sowings flower into early summer and often carry on through the heat; autumn sowings flower from late winter into spring. For other flowers by month, see what to plant in Pakistan by month.

How to grow gaillardia from seed, step by step

  1. Fill a tray or small pots with 1 part soil, 1 part sand, 1 part cocopeat. No manure at this stage.
  2. Press seeds onto the surface and barely cover them with a sprinkle of mix; light helps them sprout.
  3. Mist and keep just moist in bright shade. Seedlings usually appear in one to two weeks in warm weather.
  4. Move them to full sun as soon as they’re up, or they stretch.
  5. Transplant at four to six leaves into the final pot or bed, 25 to 30 cm apart. Our seed starting guide covers hardening off.

Potting mix and the “never overwater” rule

North Carolina State Extension notes that poorly drained clay soils can kill gaillardia. Give it a gritty mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part compost at most. That’s leaner than the standard potting mix, on purpose. Clay or terracotta pots help because they dry faster.

  • Spring and autumn: water when the top 3 cm is dry, roughly every two to four days in pots.
  • 45°C summer: water deeply at dawn; daily for small pots, every other day for beds. Don’t add a second evening drink unless the plant is flat.
  • Monsoon: stop watering on rainy days and lift pots onto bricks. This is when most gaillardia die.
  • Frost nights: mature plants shrug off a light frost; seedlings need a sheet overnight.

Feeding: almost none. A spoonful of compost every six weeks, or a weak flowering feed (higher in phosphorus and potash) once a month in pots. Rich feeding gives floppy, leafy plants with fewer flowers.

The cut back that buys you a second show

When flowering slows in peak summer or after a long spring flush, cut every stem back by about a third with clean scissors and give one deep watering. New buds usually appear within a few weeks. Deadheading (snipping each faded flower below its head) keeps blooms coming between cutbacks.

Why is my gaillardia not flowering?

  • Too little sun: under 6 hours, it grows leaves and few flowers.
  • Too much food or water: lush green, no buds.
  • Not deadheaded: the plant puts effort into seed and stops.
  • Still young: spring sown plants may need two to three months.

Is gaillardia annual or perennial?

Both, depending on the type. Gaillardia pulchella, the heat and salt tolerant wild type, is usually grown as an annual. The common garden hybrid, Gaillardia x grandiflora, is a short lived perennial that NC State lists as either. On the plains, most plants flower hard for a year, sometimes two, then decline. Resow or let it self seed.

Pests and problems

Few. Aphids on buds (wash off), powdery mildew in still, humid weather (space plants, water the soil not the leaves), and occasionally leafhoppers. A plant whose leaves yellow and collapse from the base in wet weather is rotting at the root: lift it, check for brown mushy roots, and start again in drier mix. Keep any chemical spray as a last resort, read the label, wear gloves, and keep children and pets off sprayed plants until dry.

Worth knowing first

Gaillardia isn’t on the usual lists of seriously poisonous garden plants, but it isn’t food either, and the hairy leaves can irritate sensitive skin. Wear gloves for big cutbacks if your skin reacts. Bees love it, so think about where you put it if someone in the house has a bee sting allergy. Children should not eat flowers or seeds from any ornamental plant.

How to save gaillardia seeds

  1. Leave a few of your best flowers on the plant until the petals drop and the centre becomes a dry, spiky ball.
  2. Snip the heads into a paper bag on a dry afternoon.
  3. Rub them gently between gloved fingers to free the seed.
  4. Dry for a week in shade, then store in a labelled envelope in a cool, dry place. Use within a year or two.

Hybrids may not come true from seed, so expect a mix of colours. Many growers like the surprise.

Gaillardia questions, answered

How long does gaillardia take to flower from seed?

Usually two to three months in warm weather. Autumn sowings may sit quieter through the coolest weeks and then flower heavily in late winter and spring.

When should I sow gaillardia in Pakistan?

Late February to March or September to October on the plains, a little later in Islamabad and the hills.

Can gaillardia grow in pots?

Yes, very well, in 8 to 10 inch pots with gritty, fast draining mix and full sun.

Does gaillardia need full sun?

Yes. Six or more hours of direct sun gives compact plants and the most flowers.

Why is my gaillardia dying in the rain?

Wet, heavy soil rots its roots. Lift pots out of the rain or onto bricks and switch to a sandier mix.

Should I deadhead gaillardia?

Yes, to keep flowers coming. Leave a few heads at the end of the season if you want seed.

Is gaillardia drought tolerant?

Once established, yes, more than most garden flowers. Young plants and pots still need regular water in 45°C heat.

Is blanket flower the same as gaillardia?

Yes. Blanket flower is the common English name for gaillardia, after the bright, rug like colours.
