What to Plant in Pakistan by Month: Sow and Avoid by Climate Zone

What to plant in Pakistan by month depends less on the calendar than on which of five climates you live in. A February okra sowing that thrives in Lahore is already late in Karachi, a December tomato that fruits on a Karachi roof is killed by frost in Faisalabad, and Murree runs on a different clock altogether. This guide gives the month, the zone, and, just as useful, what to leave alone that month and why.

Before you sow anything

  • Find your zone first: coastal humid (Karachi, Thatta), hot dry (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur), Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi), sub-humid north (Islamabad, Peshawar), hills (Murree, Swat, Abbottabad)
  • Two main windows in the plains: February to March for summer vegetables, September to November for winter ones
  • The two killers: frost nights in late December and January, and 45°C afternoons in May and June
  • Sun: 6 hours or more for anything that fruits; leafy greens manage on 4
  • The full sowing calendar: our month by month kitchen garden calendar lists every crop; this page is the zone filter on top of it

Why does one calendar fail across Pakistan?

Most sowing lists online are written for Punjab. That is where the agriculture department sits and where most growers live, so the months quietly assume a Lahore winter. The Punjab Agriculture Department’s own table, for example, puts okra, cucumber, watermelon and muskmelon in February to March, and methi, coriander and carrot in September to October. Those dates are sound for the Punjab plains.

Move them to Karachi and they shift. The coast barely gets cold, so the winter garden there is the main event and can start a few weeks later and run longer, while summer humidity rather than raw heat becomes the problem. Move them to Multan or Sukkur and the summer window shrinks from both ends: the soil warms early, but by late April afternoons are already punishing young seedlings. In Islamabad and Peshawar, a later spring and colder nights push summer sowings into March. In the hills, the whole year slides: summer crops go in from April, and winter is mostly a rest.

So read the month below, then read the column for your city. If your zone says Skip, the plant is not wrong. The month is.

What to plant month by month, by zone

Plant means a reliable sowing for most beginners. Maybe means it can work with care, a sheltered spot or a quick variety. Skip means the season will very likely beat you.

These are home garden windows, not field crop advice. A warm year can move everything by two weeks; a long winter can hold it back.

What fails in each zone, and why

Coastal humid: Karachi, Thatta, Gwadar

Frost is almost never the problem here. Humidity is. Powdery mildew on gourds and fungal spots on tomato leaves arrive in the sticky months, and salty tap water slowly crusts the soil surface. Winter is the long, easy season: greens, tomatoes, peppers and herbs grow from October right through to March. Skip anything that needs a real cold winter to fruit, such as apples, plums or apricots; they flower poorly or not at all.

Hot dry: Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur, Jacobabad

The summer is long but the hottest stretch is brutal. Tomato and pepper flowers drop when days stay far above 32°C, and South Dakota State University’s extension notes that heat over about 32°C can leave tomato and pepper pollen unable to set fruit at all. So spring tomato must be in flower by March. Okra, gourds, melons and chaulai cope; leafy greens wait until nights cool in October.

Punjab plains: Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Delhi

Two hazards a year. Frost nights in late December and January blacken tender seedlings on open roofs, and the May to June heat bakes black plastic pots. In exchange, both seasons are long and rewarding, which is why the standard calendars work best here.

Sub-humid north: Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar

Spring arrives a few weeks later, and the monsoon is heavier. Wait until March for bhindi and gourds, and plan for wet roots in July and August with raised pots and a gritty mix (our potting mix ratio guide covers it).

Hills: Murree, Swat, Abbottabad, Shimla

The summer garden starts in April and May, and winter is too cold for most outdoor greens. Beans, peas, potatoes and salad leaves do well in the cool summer that the plains can only envy.

The two week rule for borderline months

If your zone says Maybe, sow half your seed now and half in two weeks. One batch usually lands in the right weather, and you learn your own roof’s timing for next year. Write the dates on the pot with a marker; memory is a poor gardener.

Which plants to avoid at home, whatever the month?

Some plants are not a timing problem but a safety or space problem. Kaner (oleander) is poisonous in every part and should not grow where small children play; datura and castor seeds belong on the same list. Our poisonous plants guide for children and pets covers them with first aid. Big thirsty trees close to walls are the other mistake, and our sibling page on trees not to plant near the house explains which and why.

Worth knowing first

Rooftop pots are heavy when wet; large tubs belong over beams or walls, not the middle of an old slab. Saucers of standing water breed dengue mosquitoes within a week, so empty them. If you use any pesticide, read the whole label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away until it has dried, and never spray within the waiting period before you pick. If a child chews an unknown plant and vomits or turns drowsy, go to emergency care and take the plant with you.

Month by month planting questions

What to plant in Pakistan by month for beginners?

Start in February with bhindi and lauki, or in October with methi, palak and dhania. These two windows are the most forgiving in the plains. Pick three crops for the season, not ten, and follow our first five plants plan.

What is the best month to start a kitchen garden in Pakistan?

October in the plains and Karachi, April in the hills. Cool, sunny weeks give seeds an easy start and few pests, so first-timers succeed more often than they do in spring.

Can I grow vegetables in May or June in Multan?

You can keep established bhindi and gourds alive, but new sowings usually fail. Seedlings in small pots dry out before roots go deep. Wait for July, after the first rains cool the nights.

Why does my coriander flower so fast in spring?

Lengthening days and warm nights tell it to seed. Coriander is a short-day cool crop, so from late February it bolts. Sow it from late September to January in the plains.

Is Karachi’s planting calendar different from Lahore’s?

Yes. Karachi has almost no frost, so the winter garden runs longer, from October well into March, and summer is limited by humidity and salty water rather than heat alone.

When should I sow tomatoes in Punjab?

The Punjab Agriculture Department lists tomato nursery sowing from late October to mid November, transplanted once frost risk passes. A spring crop must be flowering before May heat starts dropping flowers.

Which plants to avoid at home in Pakistan?

Avoid kaner where children play, conocarpus and eucalyptus near walls and pipes, and anything that needs a cold winter if you live in Karachi. Each is a mismatch for a home, not a bad plant everywhere.

Can I sow seeds in the monsoon?

Yes, for cuttings, palak and second okra, but sow in raised pots with good drainage. Water-logged trays rot seed and become mosquito breeding spots within days.
