How to Grow Gomphrena (Globe Amaranth) and Dry the Flowers

Gomphrena (globe amaranth) is the summer flower that doesn’t mind 45°C. Sow it from March to May once nights are warm, or with the monsoon in June to July, in full sun and ordinary well drained soil, and its papery purple, pink or white globes keep coming until the weather turns cold. Sow more seed than you think you need: germination is patchy. The reward is flowers that dry on the stem and hold their colour for a year.

The short version

  • Type: summer annual on the plains
  • Sowing (plains): March to May, and June to July
  • Pot: 3 to 5 litres (6 to 8 inch) per plant; 4 plants in a 30 litre trough
  • Sun: full sun, 6 hours or more
  • Flowers from seed: roughly 2 to 3 months
  • Bonus: one of the best everlasting flowers for drying

Seed or nursery seedlings?

For most beginners, seedlings win with gomphrena, which is the reverse of most summer flowers. The fluffy seed is slow and uneven to sprout, and North Carolina State Extension notes germination can be poor, so sow generously. If a nursery has healthy young plants in April, buying six saves a month and the frustration. If you enjoy seed raising, it is perfectly doable with the trick below.

When to sow gomphrena seeds in Pakistan and North India

  • Karachi: February to July.
  • Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: March to April, and July.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: mid March to May, and June to July for an autumn show.
  • Islamabad, Peshawar: April to June.

February sowings in Lahore often sit and rot in cold mix. Wait for warm nights.

The germination trick: soak, then rub

Gomphrena seed comes wrapped in a woolly coat that repels water. Wisconsin Extension suggests an overnight soak; after soaking, rub them gently between two pieces of damp cloth or in a little damp sand to loosen the fluff before sowing. Seed treated this way tends to come up more evenly than dry, fluffy seed scattered on top.

How to grow gomphrena from seed, step by step

  1. Fill a tray or small pots with 1 part soil, 1 part cocopeat, 1 part sand.
  2. Sow the soaked, rubbed seed about 0.5 cm deep, three or four per cell.
  3. Keep warm and evenly damp. Seedlings appear in roughly one to two weeks in warm weather; some keep trickling up for longer.
  4. Thin to the strongest one per cell. Move to full sun as soon as they are up.
  5. Transplant at 4 to 6 leaves into final pots or beds 20 to 30 cm apart. Our seed starting guide explains hardening off.

Pots, mix and pinching

Gomphrena isn’t fussy. A normal mix of 2 parts soil, 1 part compost and 1 part sand or cocopeat is fine; see our potting mix guide. Dwarf types suit 6 inch pots and balcony boxes; tall types for cutting want 8 inch pots or a bed.

Pinch the growing tip once when plants are about 15 cm tall. This makes them branch, and every branch ends in more globes. You don’t need to deadhead much, since the old heads stay neat for weeks, but cutting flowers for vases or drying keeps new ones forming.

Watering through the seasons

  • Spring: water when the top 2 to 3 cm is dry.
  • 45°C summer: daily at dawn for small pots, every two days for beds. Established plants tolerate dry spells but flower more with steady water.
  • Monsoon: let the top dry between rains; empty saucers. Root and stem rot appear in soggy pots.
  • Cold nights: plants decline as nights cool in November and die at frost. Collect seed before then.

Feed lightly: a spoonful of compost every month or a weak flowering feed every three to four weeks. Too much nitrogen gives leggy green plants.

Why is my gomphrena not flowering?

  • Shade: less than 6 hours of sun means few heads.
  • Still young: it usually takes two to three months from sowing.
  • Too much feed: lush leaves, no globes.
  • Cold: sown too early, it sits still until the heat arrives.

How to dry gomphrena flowers

  1. Cut stems in the late morning when the globes are fully coloured and firm, before the base starts to brown.
  2. Strip off the leaves.
  3. Tie small bunches of 8 to 10 stems with a rubber band (it tightens as stems shrink).
  4. Hang them upside down in a dark, dry, airy room, out of direct sun, for two to three weeks.
  5. They are ready when the stems snap. Keep them away from direct sun and damp to hold colour longer.

NC State notes the blooms hold their colour well when dried. A bunch of purple gomphrena in a jar can still look bright many months later.

Is gomphrena annual or perennial?

Gomphrena globosa is a summer annual in most climates and only behaves as a perennial in frost free places. Karachi plants sometimes struggle on for a second year, but they look tired. On the plains, treat it as an annual and resow.

Pests and problems

NC State reports no significant pests, which matches most growers’ experience. Watch for aphids on new tips in spring, spider mites in dry heat (wash leaves), and grey mould or stem rot in long humid spells. Remove affected stems and space plants for air. If any spray is needed, go organic first; with chemicals, read the label, wear gloves and keep children and pets off the plants until dry.

Take care if

Gomphrena is not on the common lists of dangerous garden plants, but no ornamental flower should be eaten unless you know it is a food plant and grown without sprays. Gomphrena appears in some traditional herbal practices; that is tradition, and this page stays on growing. Dried flower bunches gather dust and can bother people with allergies; dust them gently or replace them each year.

How to save gomphrena seeds

Leave a few globes on the plant until they fade and turn papery at the base. Pick them on a dry day, crumble them into a paper bag and store the whole fluffy mess in a cool, dry envelope. The seeds hide inside the papery bracts; you don’t need to separate them. Rub and soak before sowing next spring.

Gomphrena growing questions

Why are my gomphrena seeds not germinating?

Cool soil and the water repelling fluff around the seed are the usual reasons. Soak and rub the seed, sow in warm weather, and sow more than you need.

How long does gomphrena take to flower?

Roughly two to three months from sowing in warm weather, then it flowers continuously until the cold.

When should I sow gomphrena in Pakistan?

Mid March to May on the plains once nights are warm, or June to July for autumn flowers. Karachi can start earlier.

Can gomphrena grow in pots?

Yes, especially dwarf types in 6 to 8 inch pots with full sun.

Does gomphrena need deadheading?

Not much. Old heads stay tidy for weeks. Cutting stems for vases or drying encourages more.

Is gomphrena heat tolerant?

Very. It is one of the few flowers that keeps blooming through 45°C summers with regular water.

Can I grow gomphrena in winter?

Not on the plains. It needs warmth and dies with cold nights. Karachi can carry plants into a mild winter.

What is gomphrena called in Urdu?

It is often sold simply as gomphrena or “globe flower” in nurseries; local names vary from place to place.
