How to Grow Fiddle Leaf Fig Indoors Without Losing Leaves
Fiddle leaf fig drops leaves for one main reason: change. A new spot, a new light level, a sudden dry spell or a blast of AC air, and the big glossy leaves start falling. Pick one bright spot near an east window, keep it there, rotate it a quarter turn each week, and water only when the top few centimetres are dry.
Before you buy
- Light: bright indirect light, a metre from an east window; no afternoon sun.
- Pot: only 2 inches wider than the root ball; a 3 foot plant usually suits a 10 to 12 inch (8 to 12 litre) pot.
- Water: when the top 3 to 5 cm is dry; much less in winter.
- Soil: free draining, slightly acidic, rich in compost.
- Propagate: stem cuttings, April to August.
- Safety: milky sap irritates skin; toxic to cats and dogs if chewed.

Why does a fiddle leaf fig drop leaves when moved?
Large ficus leaves are built for the light they grew in. Move the plant from a bright nursery to a dim lounge and it sheds leaves it can no longer support. NC State extension notes that both too much and too little water can cause leaf drop too, and that temperature swings near heating or cooling vents bring brown spots.
So the costliest mistake is shifting it around to find “the right place”. Choose the spot on day one, accept some leaf drop in the first month as it adjusts, and leave it alone.
Quarter turn, never relocate
Stick a small tape mark on the pot rim. Every Sunday, turn the pot a quarter turn clockwise so the mark moves around. The plant grows straight instead of leaning toward the window, and because it never leaves its spot, it never gets the light shock that triggers leaf fall. If you must move it for a party or painting, bring it back within a day.
Which window works in a Pakistani or Indian flat?
- East: the best spot. Morning sun is soft; place the plant 0.5 to 1 metre from the glass.
- South: good from October to March; in summer pull it back or add a sheer curtain.
- North: usually too dim for a big fiddle leaf to keep its lower leaves.
- West: avoid. NC State specifically warns that afternoon sun scorches the leaves.
Climate by region
In Karachi, it grows well indoors and on a covered verandah. In Multan, Sukkur and Bahawalpur, keep it inside from April to September, out of the AC stream; 45°C outdoor heat and dry air fry leaf edges. On the Punjab plains and in Delhi, it is an indoor plant in winter; NC State suggests keeping it above about 13°C, and a cold window on a frost night can blacken leaves touching the glass. Islamabad, Peshawar and the hills need warm indoor winters. In the ground it only suits frost free places, so on the plains a pot is the realistic choice.
How often should you water a fiddle leaf fig?
Push a finger or a wooden skewer 5 cm in. Dry means water slowly until it runs from the holes; damp means wait. Empty the saucer after 20 minutes.
| Season | Typical interval | Note |
|---|---|---|
| April to June | Every 5 to 7 days | More often in a sunny room |
| Monsoon | Every 7 to 10 days | Humid air slows drying |
| October to November | Every 10 days | Growth slows |
| December to February | Every 2 to 3 weeks | Overwatering season |
The full seasonal method is in how often to water potted plants.
Best soil for fiddle leaf fig
NC State lists moist, well drained, slightly acidic soil. A mix that works: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part cocopeat, 1 part perlite or small bark chips. Do not overpot: a pot far bigger than the roots stays wet and rots them. More in the potting mix guide. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 3 to 4 weeks from March to September, none in winter.
How to propagate a fiddle leaf fig
NC State lists stem cuttings as the method. Wear gloves: the milky sap can irritate skin.
- In April to August, cut a 20 to 30 cm stem tip with 2 or 3 leaves, just below a node.
- Let the sap stop dripping; rinse the cut end.
- Stand it in a jar of water in bright shade, or plant it in moist cocopeat and sand under a loose clear bag.
- Change jar water weekly. Roots usually show in 3 to 6 weeks in warm weather.
- Pot it into a 5 to 6 inch pot when roots reach 5 cm.
Air layering works on thick stems and gives a bigger new plant. In spring, remove a 2 cm ring of bark below a node, pack the wound in damp sphagnum moss, wrap in plastic and tie both ends. When roots fill the moss, often in 6 to 10 weeks, cut below the moss ball and pot it.
Making it branch
To turn a single stem into a tree shape, cut the top just above a node when the plant is the height you want, in spring. New branches usually break from the top two or three nodes. Root the piece you removed.
Why are fiddle leaf fig leaves turning yellow or brown?
| Sign | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Lower leaves yellow, soil wet | Overwatering | Let it dry, check drainage |
| Brown patches in leaf middle | Root rot or cold | Check roots, move from glass |
| Crispy brown edges | Underwatering, dry air | Deep water, keep from AC |
| Sudden leaf drop | Moved, draught, light change | Stop moving it |
| White fluff, sticky leaves | Mealybugs, scale | Wipe off, neem |
Dust a fiddle leaf’s big leaves with a damp cloth every two weeks; dusty leaves take in less light. For pests, see our mealybug and scale guide.
Grow it or skip it?
| Home | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bright room with an east window | Plant | Holds its leaves |
| North facing flat only | Skip | Too dim, slow decline |
| You move furniture often | Maybe | Leaf drop each move |
| Cat that chews leaves | Skip | Toxic sap |

NC State lists fiddle leaf fig as toxic to people, cats and dogs, with low severity: mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting and trouble swallowing. Its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves when pruning and wash hands. If a child chews leaves or gets sap in an eye, rinse well and call a doctor if symptoms continue; call a vet for a pet. People with a latex allergy should take extra care with ficus sap.
Fiddle leaf fig questions people ask
Why is my fiddle leaf fig dropping leaves?
Usually it has been moved, has had too much or too little water, or sits in a draught. Pick a bright spot and keep it there.
How much light does a fiddle leaf fig need?
Bright indirect light. Half a metre to a metre from an east window is ideal; avoid hot afternoon sun.
How often should I water a fiddle leaf fig?
When the top 3 to 5 cm of soil is dry, roughly weekly in summer and every two to three weeks in winter.
Is fiddle leaf fig toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, mildly. It can cause mouth irritation, drooling and vomiting in pets.
Can I propagate a fiddle leaf fig from one leaf?
A single leaf may grow roots, but without a node it rarely grows a new stem. Take a stem cutting with a node instead.
Why are there brown spots on my fiddle leaf fig?
Brown patches in the middle usually point to wet roots or cold; crispy edge browning points to dryness or AC air.
How do I make my fiddle leaf fig bushy?
Cut the top just above a node in spring. New branches usually form from the nodes below the cut.
Can fiddle leaf fig grow outdoors in Pakistan?
On a shaded Karachi verandah, yes. On the plains it scorches in summer and is hurt by winter frost, so keep it indoors or under cover.
