How to Grow Ficus Benjamina: Leaf Drop, Hedges and Root Risks

Ficus benjamina (weeping fig) is the small leaved ficus you see as office plants, clipped hedges and bonsai. Indoors it is easy once you accept two habits: it sheds leaves whenever its light changes, and outdoors its roots grow far beyond what the neat crown suggests. Keep it in a bright fixed spot indoors, and outdoors plant it well away from walls, drains and floors.

Quick facts

  • Light: bright indirect, east or south window; very sensitive to light changes.
  • Pot: 10 to 14 inch (8 to 15 litre) for a 4 to 5 foot indoor tree.
  • Water: just often enough to stop the soil drying out completely.
  • Propagate: stem cuttings or air layering, April to August.
  • Outdoors: never plant close to a house wall, boundary wall, water tank or drain.
  • Safety: toxic to cats and dogs; sap irritates skin.

Why does ficus benjamina drop leaves?

NC State extension describes it as very sensitive to light changes: move it and it drops leaves, then replaces them with leaves suited to the new light. Cold draughts make it worse, and the plant is very frost sensitive. Uneven watering and moving from a nursery to a dim room add to it.

The good news is that a weeping fig that has shed half its leaves after a move is usually alive. Scratch a twig: green underneath means it will regrow. Keep it in one place, water carefully and wait four to six weeks.

Which window works in a Pakistani flat?

  • East: best, close to the glass.
  • South: good, with a sheer curtain from May to August.
  • North: it survives but slowly thins.
  • West: only if set well back; summer afternoon sun through glass scorches.

Regions and outdoor growing

Karachi: grows outdoors as a hedge or shade tree; in pots on balconies it does well with salt wind kept off.

Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: ground planted trees cope with heat once established if watered; potted plants indoors need a pebble tray in AC rooms.

Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: widely planted as hedges and topiary. Young plants can be damaged on frost nights in late December and January; cover small ones with cloth.

Islamabad, Peshawar and the hills: frost hits it harder; keep it potted and indoors in winter.

Why you should never plant it near walls

Weeping fig is a big forest tree where it grows wild, and its roots are strong, shallow and spread wide. Planted beside a house, boundary wall, underground tank or sewer line, the roots can lift paving, push into drain joints and crack weak walls and floors over the years. A neat hedge clipped to 1 metre still has a tree’s roots below it.

Plant it in the ground only in open spaces, several metres from any building, tank or pipe, or keep it in a large pot. If you inherit an old ficus right beside a wall, get advice before cutting roots, because removing large roots can make a big tree unstable.

Hedge without the root trouble

If you want a ficus hedge along a boundary, plant it in a line of large pots or a raised bed with a concrete base, or install a deep root barrier sheet between the hedge and the wall before planting. It costs a little more now and saves you a cracked wall later.

How often should you water ficus benjamina?

NC State says to water just often enough to keep the soil from drying out completely.

Best soil for ficus benjamina

A soil based mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand, with a little cocopeat in dry cities. See the potting mix guide. Feed with balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength monthly from March to September.

How to propagate ficus benjamina

Stem cuttings

  1. From April to August, cut 10 to 15 cm semi hard tips, just below a node. Wear gloves for the sap.
  2. Remove lower leaves, keep 3 or 4 at the top.
  3. Dip in rooting powder if available, plant in moist sand and cocopeat.
  4. Cover with a clear bag, keep in bright shade. Rooting usually takes 4 to 8 weeks.

Air layering for a bigger plant

  1. In spring, pick a pencil thick branch. Remove a 1 to 2 cm ring of bark.
  2. Wrap the wound with damp sphagnum moss or cocopeat, then plastic, tied at both ends.
  3. When roots show through the moss, usually in 6 to 10 weeks, cut below and pot it.

Pruning and bonsai

Prune in late winter or spring (February to April on the plains) to shape. Its small leaves and tolerance of hard pruning make it a popular bonsai, though bonsai ficus needs more frequent watering in the small dish.

When to be careful

The ASPCA lists weeping fig as toxic to cats and dogs, naming ficin and psoralen as the toxic principles. The milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, and people with a latex allergy may react to ficus; wear gloves and long sleeves when pruning. If a child chews leaves, rinse the mouth and call a doctor if there is swelling or vomiting. Wear eye protection when cutting overhead branches.

Weeping fig questions answered

Why is my ficus benjamina dropping leaves?

Usually because it was moved or its light changed. Cold draughts and uneven watering add to it. Leave it in one bright spot and it regrows.

Is ficus benjamina toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA lists weeping fig as toxic to cats and dogs.

How much light does ficus benjamina need?

Bright indirect light near an east or south window. It survives shade but thins out.

How often should I water a weeping fig?

Just often enough that the soil never dries out completely, roughly weekly in summer and every two weeks in winter.

Do ficus roots damage houses?

They can. Ground planted weeping figs grow strong spreading roots that can lift paving and get into drains near walls, so plant well away from buildings.

How do I propagate ficus benjamina?

Root 10 to 15 cm semi hard stem cuttings in spring or summer, or air layer a branch for a larger plant.

When should I prune a ficus hedge?

Main shaping in February to April, with light trims through the growing season. Avoid hard cuts just before winter.

Can ficus benjamina survive frost?

Not well. Frost burns leaves and young stems, so protect small plants on the plains and keep potted ones indoors in hill winters.
