How to Grow Schefflera (Umbrella Plant) Bushy and Healthy

Schefflera (umbrella plant) is the hardy indoor tree that survives the beginner years, and it only gets better with a bold cut. Give it a few hours of filtered light, water thoroughly then let the soil dry, and when it shoots up as a single bare stem, chop the top off to force a bushy crown.

The short version

  • Common types: dwarf schefflera (arboricola), small leaflets, often variegated; larger umbrella tree (actinophylla).
  • Light: 3 to 4 hours of filtered light from an east, south or west window.
  • Pot: 8 to 12 inch (4 to 12 litre) depending on size.
  • Water: let the soil dry, then soak thoroughly.
  • Propagate: stem cuttings or air layering, April to August.
  • Safety: toxic to cats and dogs; sap irritates skin.

How do you make a schefflera bushy?

Left alone, schefflera grows straight up toward the light and drops lower leaves, ending up as a tall stick with an umbrella on top. Pruning fixes this.

  1. Pick the height where you want branching, usually 20 to 30 cm below the top, in March to May.
  2. Cut just above a leaf joint with clean secateurs. Wear gloves.
  3. Two or three new shoots usually break from the nodes just below the cut within 3 to 6 weeks.
  4. When those shoots reach 15 cm, pinch their tips too for a fuller head.
  5. Root the piece you cut off as a new plant.

Cut lower than feels safe

Most people trim a few centimetres off the top and get one new shoot. Cut back to a third of the plant’s height in spring and a healthy schefflera will usually break into several stems at once, giving a dense shrub by monsoon. It grows back faster than you expect in Lahore or Karachi summers.

Which window works in a Pakistani flat?

NC State extension recommends a south, west or east exposure with filtered light for 3 to 4 hours a day, and warns that direct light can scorch leaves.

  • East: the easiest; place it right by the glass.
  • South: a sheer curtain from April to September; full light in winter.
  • West: fine with a curtain or set back; summer afternoon sun scorches.
  • North: it survives, but grows leggy fast.

Regions

Karachi: grows happily on shaded balconies and in courtyards all year. Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: indoors or deep shade from May to September; outdoor heat near 45°C scorches leaves. Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: verandah in spring and autumn, indoors or sheltered against a wall on December and January frost nights. Islamabad, Peshawar and the hills: indoors through winter.

How often should you water schefflera?

NC State’s rule: let the soil dry, then water thoroughly, and do not let the pot stand in water. Soil that stays too wet or goes too dry both cause leaf drop.

Best soil for schefflera

NC State recommends well drained soil rich in organic matter. Mix 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part cocopeat and 1 part coarse sand or perlite. Our potting mix guide explains how to adjust for your city. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4 weeks from March to September.

How to propagate schefflera

Stem cuttings

  1. From April to August, cut 10 to 15 cm tips with 2 or 3 leaves, just below a node.
  2. Remove the lowest leaf and cut large leaflets in half to reduce water loss.
  3. Plant in moist cocopeat and sand, or stand in water.
  4. Cover with a clear bag, keep in bright shade.
  5. Roots usually form in 3 to 6 weeks in warm months.

Air layering

For a thick, tall stem, remove a 1 to 2 cm ring of bark below a node in spring, wrap with damp moss and plastic, and cut free once roots show, usually in 6 to 8 weeks. Seed is possible but rarely available and slow.

Spider mites: the schefflera pest

NC State names red spider mites, mealybugs and scale as serious problems. Mites love the dry air of AC rooms and Multan summers. Signs are fine pale speckles on leaves, a dull dusty look and, later, thin webbing under leaflets.

  1. Take the plant to the bathroom or balcony and rinse the undersides of leaves hard with water.
  2. Repeat every 4 to 5 days for three weeks to break the mite cycle.
  3. If they persist, spray neem oil or insecticidal soap mixed per its label, in the evening.
  4. Raise humidity with a pebble tray to make the plant less attractive to mites.

Our guide to mealybugs and other pot pests covers the rest.

Take care if

The ASPCA and NC State list schefflera as toxic to cats and dogs: calcium oxalate crystals cause mouth burning, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. Call a vet if a pet chews it. For a child, rinse and wipe the mouth and call a doctor if there is swelling or trouble swallowing; breathing difficulty is an emergency. Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap can irritate sensitive skin.

Umbrella plant questions people ask

Is schefflera toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause mouth pain, drooling and vomiting in pets.

How much light does schefflera need?

About 3 to 4 hours of filtered light from an east, south or west window. Direct hot sun scorches it.

How often should I water schefflera?

Let the soil dry, then water thoroughly. That is roughly every 4 to 6 days in summer and every two weeks in winter.

Why is my schefflera dropping leaves?

Usually soil that is too wet or too dry, cold draughts, or a sudden move. Steady watering and position fix it.

How do I propagate schefflera?

Root 10 to 15 cm stem tips in moist cocopeat and sand or in water, or air layer a thick stem.

Can schefflera grow outdoors in Pakistan?

In Karachi, yes, in shade. On the plains it needs summer shade and winter shelter from frost.

Can I grow schefflera as a bonsai?

Yes, dwarf schefflera is a popular beginner bonsai because it tolerates hard pruning and grows aerial roots.

What is the best soil for schefflera?

Well drained soil rich in compost, loosened with cocopeat and sand, in a pot with drainage holes.
