How to Grow Tuberose (Rajnigandha): Depth, Care, Storing Bulbs
The most common reason tuberose never flowers is planting the bulb too deep. To grow tuberose (Rajnigandha, Gul e Shabbo), set healthy bulbs with the pointed tip up and only about 2.5 to 5 cm of soil over them, in full sun, in February to March in the plains. Water lightly until shoots appear, then steadily, and the fragrant white spikes usually arrive in the summer and monsoon months.
Quick facts
- Names: Tuberose, Rajnigandha, Gul e Shabbo, Polianthes tuberosa.
- Plant: bulbs (strictly, tuberous clumps) about the size of a small onion.
- Depth: tip just below the surface, around 2.5 cm in heavy soil and up to 5 cm in sandy soil.
- Spacing: about 20 cm apart in beds; three to five bulbs in a 12 inch pot.
- Sun: six hours or more.
- Flowers: roughly three to four months after planting.

When to plant tuberose bulbs
Tuberose needs warm soil to wake. Planting into cold soil just leaves bulbs sitting and rotting. Commercial growers in Tamil Nadu plant in June to July, per Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, because their winters are warm; in our plains, spring is the main window.
| Zone | Plant | Expect spikes |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | February to April, or June to July | About three to four months later |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | February to March | Early summer onward; light afternoon shade helps |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Late February to April | June to September |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | March to April | July to September |
| Hills | May, in pots | Late summer, if warm enough |
If you buy bulbs in winter, keep them dry and airy until planting time. Our bulb planting calendar lines tuberose up with other bulbs.
How deep to plant tuberose bulbs
Shallow. TNAU’s commercial guide uses a depth of 2.5 cm, and NC State extension suggests about 5 cm (2 inches) in well-drained soil. The pointed tip, where last year’s leaves grew, goes up; the flat, rooty base goes down. If you cannot tell, lay the bulb on its side and it will find its way.
- Choose firm bulbs with no soft patches or mould. Larger bulbs flower more reliably than tiny offsets.
- Fill a 12 inch pot (about 8 to 10 litres) with two parts garden soil, one part compost and one part coarse sand.
- Set bulbs tip up, about 10 cm apart in pots or 20 cm apart in beds.
- Cover so the tips sit 2.5 to 5 cm below the surface.
- Water once to settle the soil, then let the top dry before watering again until shoots show.
- Place in full sun once leaves appear.
The depth test
Hold a bulb against your thumb. If you would bury it deeper than your thumb is long, you are going too deep. Deep planting gives leaves but few or no spikes, and it is the mistake behind most “my rajnigandha won’t flower” complaints.
Can tuberose grow in pots?
Yes, and pots make lifting and storing easy. Use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide and deep, with a big drainage hole. Bulbs crowded too tightly start to bloom less after a couple of years, so divide them. See our potting mix guide for ratios.
Watering and feeding
Water sparingly until shoots are a few cm tall. Then keep the soil evenly moist through summer: every two days in a pot in May and June, more often at 45C. Let the top dry slightly in the monsoon, because waterlogged bulbs rot. Our watering guide has the season-by-season rhythm.
Feed with compost at planting and a balanced liquid feed every three to four weeks once leaves are growing. Heavy nitrogen alone gives grassy leaves without spikes.
Why is my tuberose not flowering?
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Planted too deep | Lift and replant with tips just under the soil |
| Bulbs too small | Grow offsets on for a season; flower from big bulbs |
| Less than six hours of sun | Move to full sun |
| Crowded clump | Divide every two to three years |
| Bulb already flowered | A bulb that bloomed usually rests; its offsets flower later |
Tuberose care after flowering
Cut the spent spike near its base but keep the leaves. Let the foliage carry on feeding the bulb until it yellows naturally in autumn. NC State extension recommends letting the plant die back on its own so the bulb stores enough energy for next year.
How to store tuberose bulbs
- After the leaves yellow in November, stop watering.
- In frost-prone areas (Islamabad, Peshawar, much of Punjab), lift the clump with a fork.
- Shake off soil and separate offsets from the main bulb.
- Dry in shade for a week.
- Store in a paper bag or a box of dry sand or sawdust, in a dry, airy room until spring.
- Check monthly; throw out any soft or mouldy bulbs.
In Karachi, bulbs can stay in the ground or pot through winter if kept fairly dry.
How to multiply tuberose
Each clump makes offsets around the mother bulb. NC State notes these should be divided every two to three years. Plant the big ones for flowers and grow the small ones on in a separate pot for a season.
The scent is strong; some people with allergies or headaches find a pot by the bed too much, so keep it outside a bedroom window. Bulbs are not food: store them away from onions and out of children’s reach. Wash hands after handling bulbs if you have sensitive skin. If you use any spray on thrips, read the label, wear gloves, and keep kids and pets away until dry.

Rajnigandha questions people ask
How do you grow tuberose at home?
Plant firm bulbs tip up, only 2.5 to 5 cm deep, in a sunny pot or bed in spring, water lightly until shoots appear and then keep the soil evenly moist.
When should I plant tuberose bulbs in Pakistan?
February to April in most of the plains, a little later in Islamabad and Peshawar. Karachi can also plant in early summer.
Which side of the tuberose bulb goes up?
The pointed tip goes up and the flat, rooty base goes down.
How long does tuberose take to flower?
Usually three to four months after planting a good-sized bulb in warm weather.
Do tuberose bulbs flower every year?
A bulb that has flowered usually does not flower again; its offsets grow on and flower in later seasons, so a clump keeps blooming.
Why are my tuberose leaves turning yellow?
In autumn it is normal die back. In summer, look at waterlogging first, then feeding.
Should I cut tuberose leaves after flowering?
No. Cut only the spent spike and let leaves feed the bulb until they yellow.
Can I leave tuberose bulbs in the ground over winter?
In frost-free Karachi, yes, if kept dry. In frost-prone cities, lifting and storing is safer.
When is the best time to pick tuberose flowers?
Early morning. TNAU advises picking loose florets before 8 am as they begin to open, or cutting whole spikes when the lower buds open.
