How to Clean Plant Leaves in Smog Season: Leaf Shine Myths
The best way to clean plant leaves in smog season is the plainest: wipe them with a soft cloth dipped in clean water, supporting each leaf from underneath, or give small pots a gentle lukewarm shower. Milk, coconut oil, mayonnaise and shop leaf shine sprays make leaves glossy for a day, but oils and coatings trap the next layer of dust and can clog the leaf.
In brief
- When: every 2 to 3 weeks from November to January in Lahore, Delhi, Faisalabad and Peshawar; monthly elsewhere
- With what: soft cotton or microfibre cloth, clean water (filtered or boiled and cooled if your tap water spots)
- Time of day: morning, so leaves dry before evening chill
- Skip: oils, mayonnaise, furniture polish, shine sprays
- Brush, don’t wipe: fuzzy leaves (African violet), cacti, succulents

Why do leaves get so dusty in November?
Smog season in the Punjab plains and the Delhi region traps dust, soot and fine particles close to the ground under still, cold air. Indoor plants by a window and balcony plants get a grey film within a week or two. The leaf surface is where a plant catches light and breathes through tiny pores. A thick film shades it, a bit like a car windscreen in fog. Growth slows anyway in winter, so the plant has less to spare.
Will dust kill a plant? Rarely. But a grimy money plant, rubber plant or peace lily looks tired, and pests like spider mites thrive on dusty, dry leaves.
How do you clean plant leaves properly?
- Fill a small bowl with clean, room temperature water. Hard tap water leaves white spots; filtered or boiled and cooled water avoids them.
- Dip a soft cloth and squeeze it so it is damp, not dripping.
- Rest the leaf on your open palm. Wipe from the stem end out to the tip, in one direction.
- Do the underside too, lightly. That’s where mites and mealybugs hide, and you’ll spot them early.
- Rinse the cloth when it turns grey. A dirty cloth just spreads grime.
- Let the plant dry in bright light, not in a cold draught.
For very dirty leaves, add one or two drops of mild, unscented liquid soap to a litre of water, wipe, then wipe again with plain water. Skip strong dishwashing liquid: it strips the leaf’s natural waxy layer.
The monthly bathroom shower
Carry small and medium pots into the bathroom once a month. Wrap a plastic bag round the pot top so soil doesn’t wash out, then rinse the leaves for a minute with lukewarm water from the hand shower. Let them drain on the floor for an hour before taking them back. It cleans both sides of every leaf in one go, and spider mites hate it.
Is milk good for plant leaves?
Milk diluted half and half with water is an old trick for shine, and some gardeners use it once or twice a year. It does make leaves glossy. But milk is fat and protein, and on a warm balcony it can smell sour and attract ants and mould. Shine is cosmetic: the plant doesn’t care. If you like the look, use it rarely and wipe with plain water in between.
Can I use coconut oil or olive oil on leaves?
Better not. Oils sit on the surface as a sticky film. Dust in smoggy air sticks to that film faster than to a clean leaf, and a heavy coat can block the pores the leaf uses to exchange air. In strong sun an oily leaf can also scorch. The same goes for mayonnaise, a viral trick that leaves egg and oil on the leaf.
Are leaf shine sprays bad for plants?
The commercial wax and silicone sprays give the plastic plant look. Used now and then on tough, waxy leaves they are unlikely to kill a plant, but regular use can coat the pores and build up a film. Never use them on new soft leaves, hairy leaves or the underside. A damp cloth gives a natural sheen by itself, because a clean leaf already reflects light.
| Method | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Damp cloth, plain water | Use | Removes dust without residue |
| Lukewarm shower | Use | Cleans both sides, washes off mites |
| Soft paintbrush | Use for fuzzy leaves and cacti | Water marks and rots hairy leaves |
| Diluted milk | Rarely, if at all | Cosmetic; can sour and attract pests |
| Coconut or olive oil | Skip | Traps dust, can scorch |
| Mayonnaise, polish | Skip | Residue, smell, pests |
Do houseplants clean smog from the air?
Not in any amount you’d notice in a real room. The famous lab tests used sealed chambers, and a home with doors, windows and a cooking stove changes the air far faster than any shelf of plants. Plants are lovely to live with, but don’t count on them as an air purifier in November. We checked the claim in detail in our air purifying plants verdict.
What does smog do to outdoor plants?
Balcony and terrace plants get the heaviest coat, and in thick winter fog the leaves stay damp, so dust turns to a sticky grime. Hose or sprinkle them gently on a sunny late morning so they dry by afternoon. Don’t water foliage in the evening on foggy or frost nights in Lahore or Delhi: wet leaves at night invite fungal spots. Karachi balconies get salty dust rather than smog, and a monthly rinse helps there too. Fruit and vegetable leaves (chillies, tomatoes, lemon) are worth wiping before harvest, but wash the produce anyway.
Some popular houseplants are toxic if chewed, and cleaning day is when children and pets get close to them. Dieffenbachia, money plant (pothos), peace lily and ZZ plant irritate the mouth and throat, and kaner (oleander) is seriously poisonous. Wash your hands after wiping their leaves, keep the cloth away from little hands, and see our list of plants that are poisonous to kids and pets. If someone has wheezing or chest tightness during smog season, that is a doctor’s question, not a plant one.

Leaf cleaning questions people ask
How do I clean dust off indoor plant leaves?
Wipe each leaf with a soft cloth dampened in clean water, supporting the leaf from below. Small pots can go under a gentle lukewarm shower instead.
How often should I clean my plant leaves?
Every two to three weeks during smog months in the northern plains, about monthly the rest of the year, or whenever a finger leaves a clean streak.
Can I use wet wipes on plant leaves?
Plain, unscented water wipes are fine in a pinch. Avoid baby wipes with lotion, alcohol or perfume, which leave a residue.
