Plant Not Flowering? Fixes for Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Jasmine

When a plant is not flowering, check five things in this order: sun hours, nitrogen, pruning time, pot size, and age. Most hibiscus, bougainvillea and jasmine plants that are all leaves are missing sun or getting urea. Fix those two and a large share of “barren” plants bloom within a season.

The five checks

  • Sun: fewer than 6 hours direct? Move it first
  • Nitrogen: urea, fresh manure or lots of kitchen scraps make leaves, not flowers
  • Pruning: cut at the wrong month removes the flowering shoots
  • Pot: too big and wet, or too small and starving
  • Age and season: young plants and off season months simply wait

Why is my plant not flowering? Work through the causes in order

1. Not enough sun

Flowering plants turn sunlight into buds. Hibiscus (gurhal), bougainvillea and jasmine (motia, mogra, chameli) all want at least six hours of direct sun. Clemson’s extension notes bougainvillea flowers sooner and more freely under high light. A balcony that looks bright but only gets two hours of sun produces green plants. Test it: note when direct sun lands on the pot and when it leaves, on a clear day.

2. Too much nitrogen

Urea, DAP-heavy doses, fresh gobar and constant tea leaves push leaves. In flowering season, switch to compost plus a potash-rich feed. Our guide to NPK and organic fertiliser explains the numbers on a bag.

3. Pruned at the wrong time

Many shrubs flower on new shoots. Cut them just before they would have bloomed and you lose the season.

4. Wrong pot

A small plant in a huge pot of wet soil spends years making roots. A large plant stuck in a tiny pot dries out every afternoon and drops buds.

5. Age, season and weather

Cutting grown plants usually flower within a year; seedlings take longer. Heat above about 42C, monsoon cloud weeks and frost nights pause flowering on many plants. That is a wait, not a problem.

Plant by plant: what fixes which?

PlantMost common causeFix
BougainvilleaToo much water and nitrogen, too little sunFull sun, let it dry, keep it snug in its pot
Hibiscus (gurhal)Bud drop from dry spells, heat, pestsEven watering, mulch, check buds for pests
Mogra and motiaNo pruning, too little sunHard prune in Feb, then full sun and potash
Chameli (vine jasmine)Shade and summer pruningPrune right after flowering only

Why is my bougainvillea not flowering?

Bougainvillea flowers best a little stressed: full sun, slightly dry soil and roots that fill the pot. Clemson describes it as extremely drought resistant and happiest in soil that does not stay constantly wet. A pampered plant, watered daily and fed urea, turns into a green thorny bush.

  1. Move it to the sunniest spot you have, 6 hours or more.
  2. Water only when the top 5 cm of soil is dry, and let it wilt slightly once before watering again.
  3. Stop any high nitrogen feed. Give a potash-rich fertiliser at label strength monthly.
  4. Do not move it into a bigger pot this year.
  5. Prune hard after a flowering flush, then let new shoots grow; the colourful bracts come on that new growth.

Full care is in our bougainvillea growing guide.

Why are hibiscus buds falling off before opening?

Hibiscus usually makes buds; it just drops them. Common triggers:

  • Uneven watering, especially a pot drying out on a hot roof in May.
  • Sudden heat or hot dry loo winds.
  • Small pests. Aphids, whitefly and mealybugs cluster on buds; look under the sepals. Spray with water, then mild soap solution in the evening.
  • Moving the pot around.

Pick up fallen buds, which can harbour pests. Mulch the pot with dry leaves, water deeply in the early morning and give afternoon shade in the hottest weeks of a Multan or Delhi summer. See the hibiscus growing guide for feeding and pruning.

Why is my jasmine not flowering?

Mogra (Arabian jasmine) flowers from March to September on new shoots. If it was never pruned, it grows long bare stems with few buds. Cut it back by about a third in February, before new growth, then give full sun and a potash-rich feed. The same timing works for motia.

Climbing chameli flowers on wood from earlier growth, so prune it straight after its main flush, not in winter. Shade is the other big reason; a jasmine on a north wall rarely performs. Our mogra growing guide walks through it.

Stop the urea, start the potash

The simplest change for most flowering pots: stop urea and heavy nitrogen once the flowering season approaches (February for summer bloomers, September for winter ones) and switch to compost plus a potash-rich fertiliser at label strength. Wood ash from a clean fire contains potash too, but use only a small handful per large pot, since it is alkaline.

What is the best fertilizer for flowering?

A fertiliser with a higher last number (K, potash) than first number (N) during bud season, plus compost twice a year. Balanced NPK suits the growing season. Bone meal adds phosphorus slowly. More is not better: overfeeding burns roots and can stop flowering altogether. If you ever reach for a chemical pesticide for bud pests, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until it dries.

Before you fix it

Some flowering plants are toxic. Kaner (oleander) and datura are seriously poisonous to children and animals, and bougainvillea thorns cause nasty scratches. Keep pots and prunings away from small children and grazing pets, and wash hands after pruning. Roof gardens carry weight: large wet pots should sit near walls or beams, not in the middle of an old slab.

How can you make plants flower more, starting this week?

  1. Note sun hours for each pot and move the fussiest flowerers to the brightest spot.
  2. Remove spent flowers so energy goes into new buds.
  3. Switch to a potash-rich feed in flowering season.
  4. Water deeply and evenly, but only when the top few centimetres dry.
  5. Write the right pruning month on each pot label with a marker.

Questions about plants that won’t flower

Why is my plant not flowering?

Most often too little sun, followed by too much nitrogen, wrong pruning time, the wrong pot size, or simply age and season. Check them in that order.

Why is my bougainvillea not flowering?

It is probably getting too much water, too much nitrogen or too little sun. Give it full sun, let it dry between waterings and keep it slightly pot bound.

Why are my hibiscus buds falling off?

Uneven watering, heat, pests on the buds or moving the pot. Water deeply and evenly, check buds for insects and clear fallen buds away.

Why is my jasmine not flowering?

Usually shade or no pruning. Prune mogra in February and give it full sun; prune climbing chameli only right after it flowers.

Which fertilizer is best for flowering plants?

Compost plus a fertiliser with more potash than nitrogen during bud season. Avoid urea once flowering approaches.

Does urea stop plants from flowering?

Too much of it can. Nitrogen pushes leafy growth, so plants given lots of urea often grow big and green with few flowers.

How many hours of sun do flowering plants need?

Most sun-loving flowering shrubs need at least six hours of direct sun. Shade-tolerant plants are the exception.

Can a pot that is too big stop flowering?

Yes. A small plant in a very large pot stays wet and puts energy into roots. Move up only one pot size at a time.

Is banana peel water good for flowering?

It adds a little potash at best and can attract fruit flies. Composting peels and using a measured potash feed is more reliable.

Why did my plant stop flowering in summer?

Many plants pause in extreme heat above about 42C or in cloudy monsoon weeks. Keep them watered and shaded in the afternoon and flowering usually returns.
