Ratti Seeds Poisonous? Why Rosary Pea Beads Are Dangerous
Ratti seeds (rosary pea, gunja, Abrus precatorius) are poisonous: the glossy red seeds with a black spot contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. A whole seed with an unbroken coat often passes through the gut, but a seed that is chewed, cracked or drilled for a necklace can release the toxin. Keep them away from children completely.
The short version
- Names: ratti, gunja, gunchi (Urdu/Hindi); rosary pea, jequirity bean, crab’s eye (English); Abrus precatorius.
- Looks like: a small, hard, shiny scarlet seed with a black patch, in a pod on a thin climbing vine.
- Toxin: abrin.
- Danger: chewed, broken or drilled seeds. Beads in jewellery and toys are the main household risk.
- Symptoms: usually start within hours, but can be delayed 1 to 3 days.
- What to do: hospital, even if the child seems fine.

Are ratti seeds really poisonous?
Yes. The US CDC’s fact sheet on abrin names rosary pea seeds as its source and says swallowing the seeds can lead to poisoning. The hard coat is protective, which is why some swallowed whole seeds cause no harm. That luck is not something to rely on, because nobody can tell whether a seed was cracked on the way down, and children chew.
The vine grows wild in parts of Sindh, Punjab and across India, and seeds are sold by pansaris and craft sellers. Historically, goldsmiths used ratti as a unit of weight, because the seeds are fairly uniform. That tradition is the reason the word “ratti” still turns up in jewellery talk.
Why are drilled beads and jewellery the real risk?
Drilling a hole through the seed breaks the hard coat. A child who sucks or chews a ratti bracelet, or a bead that falls into a mouth, is then exposed to the inside of the seed.
- Don’t buy red and black seed bracelets, rosaries (tasbeeh) or toy rattles for homes with children.
- Don’t use ratti as playing counters, gotis or as a “weight” in a toy kitchen.
- Check craft kits and decorative bowls of “lucky seeds”.
How to tell ratti from look-alikes
Ratti is small (about the size of a lentil grain or pea), very shiny, scarlet with a jet black cap at one end. Red sandalwood seeds (Adenanthera, “lal chandan beej”) are larger, heart shaped, and all red with no black patch. If your bead is red with a black spot, treat it as ratti until proven otherwise.
What are the symptoms of ratti seed poisoning?
From the CDC description of swallowed abrin:
- Vomiting and diarrhoea, which may contain blood.
- Severe dehydration and low blood pressure.
- Drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations or seizures in severe cases.
- Blood in urine; over several days liver, spleen and kidneys can be affected.
Symptoms usually appear within about 8 hours, but can take 1 to 3 days. A child who seems fine at bedtime can be ill the next day. This delay is the most important fact on this page.
What to do if a child swallows a ratti seed
- Stay calm. Take anything still in the mouth out with your finger sweeping outward.
- Do not make the child vomit, and don’t give salt water, milk or desi remedies.
- Go to the nearest hospital emergency now, even if there are no symptoms. Take a seed or the bracelet with you.
- Tell staff the name: “rosary pea, Abrus precatorius, abrin”. Say how many seeds, whether they were drilled or chewed, and the time.
- Expect observation. Doctors may give activated charcoal if it was very recent, and fluids. There is no antidote; care is supportive.

Is ratti used in hakeem medicine?
In some traditional systems, ratti seed was used after “purification” steps such as boiling in milk, and the root and leaves have their own folk uses. That is tradition, not proof of safety, and home preparation is dangerous because there is no way to check the toxin was destroyed. A 2026 case report describes a man who needed hospital care with persistent vomiting after drinking water in which ratti seeds had been boiled as a folk remedy. Do not take any homemade gunja preparation, and do not give it to a child, pregnant woman or pet.
Ratti sits alongside other “nazar” and ritual seeds sold loose by pansaris. Harmal is a separate case with different risks; see our harmal (isband) toxicity guide.
What about pets and the vine itself?
Dogs that chew the bracelets or pods are at the same risk. Pull out wild ratti vines from the garden wall, with gloves, before the pods split in winter, and bin the pods in a bag rather than composting them.
Any swallowed, chewed or broken ratti seed in a child, pregnant woman or older adult: go to hospital immediately, even with no symptoms, because illness can start a day or more later. Adults who swallowed one intact seed should still call a doctor or poison centre. Vomiting blood, bloody stools, very little urine, fits or drowsiness are emergencies. Seed dust or sap in the eye: rinse with running water for 15 minutes and get it checked. For more seeds and plants to keep away from children, read our poisonous plants guide.
Ratti and rosary pea questions
Are ratti seeds poisonous to touch?
Touching an intact seed is not considered dangerous. Wash hands after handling, especially broken or drilled seeds, and keep seed dust away from eyes.
What is gunja seed in English?
Gunja is the rosary pea or jequirity bean, Abrus precatorius. It is the same plant as ratti.
What happens if a child swallows a ratti seed?
A whole seed may pass without harm, but a chewed or drilled one can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and organ damage. Take the child to hospital straight away.
Can you eat ratti seeds after boiling?
No. Home boiling is not a reliable way to make them safe, and people have needed hospital care after drinking boiled seed remedies.
Are red and black seed bracelets safe?
Not for children or pets. Drilled rosary pea beads can release toxin if sucked or chewed.
How long after eating ratti do symptoms start?
Usually within about 8 hours, but sometimes 1 to 3 days later. That is why hospital observation matters.
Is ratti the same as red sandalwood seed?
No. Lal chandan seeds are bigger, heart shaped and fully red. Ratti has a black patch on one end.
Is there an antidote for abrin poisoning?
No. Hospital care supports breathing, fluids and blood pressure while the body recovers.
Why is ratti used to weigh gold?
The seeds are fairly uniform in weight, so goldsmiths traditionally used them as a small measuring unit. The name survives in jewellery terms.
