How to Grow Phlox from Seed for a Carpet of Winter Colour
If you sow phlox seed in October, you will have a low carpet of pink, red, white and purple flowers from about January until the heat ends it in April. That is the whole season of annual phlox (Phlox drummondii) on the plains, and it is one of the cheapest, most cheerful winter flowers a beginner can grow. How to grow phlox well comes down to three things: sow it where it will flower, give it full sun, and keep cutting off the faded heads.
Quick facts
- Plant: annual phlox, Phlox drummondii, a Texas native; not the tall perennial garden phlox
- Sow (plains): October to mid November; Karachi, November to December; hills, March to April
- Pot: 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 inches) wide for 3 to 4 plants; window boxes and bed edges work too
- Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand
- Sun: 6 hours or more in winter
- Flowers: roughly two to three months after sowing; January to April in Punjab
- Seed vs seedlings: seed sown direct is cheaper and usually better; nursery seedlings save time if you are late

Is phlox annual or perennial?
The winter phlox sold in seed packets across Pakistan and North India is the annual one. It grows, flowers, sets seed and dies within a single cool season, though in good conditions it reseeds itself. Tall garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) and creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) are perennials from cooler climates; they rarely do well on the plains and occasionally appear in hill gardens. Everything below is about the annual.
When should you sow phlox seeds in Pakistan?
| Zone | Sow | Flowering |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | November to December | January to March |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Mid October to mid November | January to early March, ends with the first 35C days |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | October to mid November | January to April |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | October, or February for a spring show | February to May |
| Hills | March to April | Summer |
Sow later than mid December in the plains and plants will barely reach flowering size before heat cuts them short.
How do you grow phlox from seed?
- Fill pots or prepare a bed with the mix above; see the potting mix guide. Phlox likes sharp drainage.
- Water first so the soil is evenly damp.
- Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep, 2 or 3 per spot, spots 15 cm apart.
- Cover lightly and press. Phlox germinates best in darkness, so cover the pot with newspaper or a board for the first week.
- Check daily. Seedlings usually appear in one to two weeks; remove the cover as soon as they do.
- Thin to one strong seedling per spot when they have 4 leaves.
Sow it where it blooms
Phlox seedlings resent being moved, and the shock often makes them stall or flower poorly. Sow straight into the final pot or bed edge. If you must use a tray, use individual cells (see the seed starting guide) and move the whole plug without disturbing roots at 4 to 6 leaves.
Seed or nursery seedlings: which is better for beginners?
For most beginners, seed sown direct in October is better: one packet fills several pots, plants establish without transplant shock, and germination is reliable with fresh seed. Nursery seedlings in November are worth buying if you are late, have only one or two pots, or have failed with seed before. Choose short, bushy seedlings with no flowers yet; ones already in bloom in tiny bags often stay stunted.
Pinching, deadheading and care
- Pinch once: when plants are about 10 cm tall, nip out the growing tip with your nails. Each stem branches into two or three, giving a fuller cushion and more flowers.
- Deadhead weekly: snip faded clusters just above a pair of leaves. Without this, plants put energy into seed and flowering slows in February.
- Water: when the top 2 cm is dry, every 3 to 5 days in winter in the plains, more often in March. Water the soil, not the leaves.
- Frost nights: young plants handle light cold. On a hard frost in Lahore or Islamabad, cover pots with a cloth overnight.
- Feeding: compost in the mix, then a half strength liquid feed with more potassium than nitrogen every two weeks once buds form. Rich nitrogen feeding gives leaves, not flowers.
How long does phlox take to flower, and why isn’t mine?
Expect flowers about two to three months after sowing in cool weather. If yours haven’t flowered:
- Too little sun: under 5 to 6 hours, plants stretch and flower sparsely.
- Too much nitrogen or fresh manure.
- Sown late, so plants are too small when the heat arrives.
- Transplant shock from moving seedlings.
- Crowded seedlings competing for light; thin to 15 cm.
Pests and diseases
| Problem | Sign | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Damping off | Seedlings collapse at soil level | Sow thinner, water less, more air |
| Root and crown rot | Whole plant wilts in wet soil | Better drainage; remove dead plants |
| Powdery mildew | White powder on leaves, late season | Space plants, water the soil only, remove worst leaves |
| Aphids | Clusters on buds, sticky leaves | Water spray, then insecticidal soap |
| Spider mites | Speckled leaves in March heat | Mist undersides; the season is ending anyway |
How do you save phlox seeds?
In March, stop deadheading a few of your best plants. Small round seed capsules form where flowers were. When they turn papery brown, cut the clusters into a paper bag, as capsules can split and flick seed out. Dry for a week, then separate seed from chaff and store in a labelled envelope somewhere cool and dry until October. Colours from saved seed are mixed and may differ from the parents.
Annual phlox is not known as a dangerous plant, but it is not food: keep toddlers from chewing flowers and seed, and keep fertiliser bags locked away. If you spray for pests beyond water and soap, read the label fully, wear gloves and a mask, spray on a calm evening and keep children and pets off until it dries. Call a doctor or poison help line if anyone swallows a garden chemical, and keep the label with you.
Grow it or skip it?
Plant it across the plains from October to mid November: it is low effort, good for pots, bed edges and window boxes, and a strong choice for beginners. Maybe in Karachi, where it does fine but the season is shorter. Skip spring sowings in the plains. More winter annuals in Phool aur Paudhe.
Phlox growing questions
How do you grow phlox from seed?
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep straight into a sunny pot or bed in October, cover to keep dark for a week, keep moist and thin seedlings to 15 cm apart.
When should I sow phlox seeds in Pakistan?
October to mid November in Lahore, Multan and Delhi, November to December in Karachi, and March to April in the hills.
How long does phlox take to germinate?
Usually one to two weeks in cool weather. Darkness and steady moisture help; old seed is slower.
How long does phlox take to flower?
About two to three months after sowing in cool weather, so January for an October sowing in the plains.
Why is my phlox not flowering?
Most often too little sun, too much nitrogen, crowding, or a late sowing. Give it six hours of sun and a potassium leaning feed.
Is phlox annual or perennial?
The winter phlox sold here is an annual that lives one cool season. Garden phlox and creeping phlox are perennials that suit hill gardens better.
How do I make phlox bushier?
Pinch out the tip once when plants are about 10 cm tall, and deadhead faded flowers every week.
How do you save phlox seeds?
Let a few flower heads dry on the plant until capsules turn brown, then collect into a paper bag, dry a week and store cool and dry.
Can phlox grow in pots?
Yes. A 20 to 25 cm pot holds three or four plants. Good drainage and full sun matter more than size.
