How to Grow Mussaenda: Air Layering, Pruning and Winter Care
How to grow mussaenda in short: buy a grafted or air layered plant rather than wrestling with cuttings, give it morning sun and afternoon shade, keep it evenly moist and well fed from March to October, prune in late February, and protect it from frost. Those pink, red or white “petals” are actually enlarged sepals called bracts, and they last for weeks, which is why a healthy mussaenda looks in flower for most of the warm season.
Before you start
- Plant: Mussaenda hybrids (pink Dona types, red Ashanti blood, white Queen Sirikit and others)
- Best zones: Karachi and other humid coastal cities; Lahore and Delhi with winter care
- Sun: 4 to 6 hours, ideally morning; harsh afternoon sun scorches bracts on the plains
- Pot: 30 to 50 litres (14 to 18 inch)
- Propagation that works: air layering; hardwood cuttings are slower and less sure
- Prune: late February to early March
- Frost: tender; cold nights strip the leaves and frost can kill young plants

Will mussaenda grow in your city?
| Zone | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | Plant | Warm winters and humid air suit it best |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Maybe | Lovely from April to November; needs a sheltered wall and frost cover |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Maybe | Pot only, moved to a verandah or bright room in winter |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Skip, or shade house | Dry 45C wind burns bracts and leaves |
| Hills | Skip | Too cold outdoors |
How do you propagate mussaenda?
Honesty first: soft cuttings of many coloured hybrids root poorly at home, and nurseries usually sell air layered or grafted plants. If you want to try, these methods work best in order.
Air layering (most reliable)
- In April to July, choose a healthy branch about pencil to finger thick.
- About 30 cm from the tip, remove a ring of bark 2 to 3 cm wide, scraping the green layer off the wood.
- Wrap a fistful of wet cocopeat or sphagnum around the wound.
- Cover with clear plastic and tie both ends tight. Shade the bundle with foil or newspaper.
- Check after six to eight weeks. When white roots fill the plastic, cut below the ball.
- Remove the plastic gently, pot into a 6 to 8 inch pot and keep in shade for two weeks.
Hardwood cuttings
- In February to March or the monsoon, cut 15 to 20 cm pieces of firm, brown wood.
- Dip the base in rooting hormone if available.
- Plant in damp sand and cocopeat under a plastic cover, in bright shade.
- Be patient: rooting can take two months or longer, and some won’t make it.
What pot, soil and light suit mussaenda?
Mussaenda likes rich, slightly acidic, moisture holding soil that still drains. A good mix is 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost or leaf mould and 1 part cocopeat; our potting mix guide gives variations. Punjab’s alkaline soil and hard water are its main enemy, showing as yellow leaves with green veins. Adding leaf mould and occasional iron micronutrients helps.
Light: an east facing balcony or a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal on the plains. In Karachi it can take more sun.
How should you water and feed it through the year?
- Summer: keep evenly moist; pots daily. Mist leaves on dry evenings.
- Monsoon: water when the top few cm are dry. Good drainage matters.
- Autumn: taper watering as nights cool.
- Winter and frost nights: keep it on the dry side; wet cold roots rot.
Feed every three to four weeks from March to October with compost and a balanced or bloom fertiliser at label rate. Stop in winter. Use our seasonal watering guide for the finger test.
Rainwater for a happier mussaenda
If your tap water leaves white crust on pots, it is alkaline and mussaenda will slowly yellow. Collect monsoon rainwater in a covered drum and use it for this plant first. In dry months, a handful of used tea leaves or leaf mould worked into the top of the pot every few weeks also nudges the soil toward the slightly acidic side it likes. Cover the drum: open water breeds dengue mosquitoes.
When should you prune mussaenda, and what if you prune late?
Prune in late February to early March, once frost has passed and before growth starts. Cut back by a third, shaping the bush and removing cold damaged twigs. Mussaenda flowers on new shoots, so this cut sets up the season.
Prune late, in May or later, and you remove developing flower heads and shorten the display. Pruning in autumn is risky because the soft new growth that follows gets hit by winter cold. During the season, just snip faded bract clusters.
How do you protect mussaenda in winter?
- From December, move pots to the warmest sheltered spot, against a south or west wall.
- On frost nights, cover with a cloth or a cardboard box after sunset; remove in the morning.
- In Islamabad or Peshawar, bring pots onto a covered verandah or into a bright room.
- Expect leaf drop; it will regrow in spring if roots survive.
- Do not feed until March.
Why is my mussaenda not flowering, or its leaves yellow?
| Problem | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| No bracts | Too much shade or no pruning | More morning sun, February prune |
| Yellow with green veins | Alkaline soil, iron lockout | Leaf mould, rainwater, iron micronutrients |
| Brown crisp edges | Hot dry wind | Afternoon shade, mulch, evening mist |
| Leaf drop in winter | Cold | Shelter; wait for spring |
| White fluff, sticky leaves | Mealybugs, aphids | Soap water wipe, neem spray |
Mussaenda is not one of the well known poisonous garden plants, but it is not food either; keep little ones from chewing leaves and call a doctor if a child eats a quantity of any plant. The bigger hazards are around it: standing water in saucers and drums breeds dengue mosquitoes, so empty saucers after watering. Treat pests with soap or neem first. With any chemical spray, follow the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until it dries.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it in Karachi without a second thought, and in Lahore or Delhi if you can give it a sheltered wall in winter. It is one of the showiest pot shrubs in Phool aur Paudhe. Skip it on a blazing Multan roof or if you want something you can ignore; it rewards attention.
Mussaenda questions people ask
Can mussaenda be grown from cuttings?
Yes, but slowly and not always. Hardwood cuttings in spring or the monsoon root better than soft tips. Air layering is far more reliable for home gardeners.
Why is my mussaenda not flowering?
It probably lacks morning sun, missed its February prune, or is underfed. Very alkaline soil also weakens it.
Why are mussaenda leaves turning yellow?
Usually alkaline soil or hard water locking up iron, shown by yellow leaves with green veins. Overwatering in winter is the other cause.
What is the best fertilizer for mussaenda?
Compost or leaf mould plus a balanced or bloom fertiliser at label rate every few weeks from March to October. Add iron micronutrients if veins stay green on yellow leaves.
How do I care for mussaenda in winter?
Keep it dry side, shelter it from wind and frost, and cover it on cold nights. Leaf drop is normal.
Does mussaenda need full sun?
Morning sun with afternoon shade is best on the plains. In Karachi it takes more direct sun.
Can mussaenda grow in a pot?
Yes, and on the plains a pot is often easier because you can move it out of frost. Use a 14 to 18 inch pot.
Are mussaenda flowers real petals?
No. The colourful parts are enlarged sepals called bracts. The true flowers are small and star shaped in the centre.
